Still waiting for the warning and the lock...lol.
Arielyn. Consider this a "warning". If you don't stop giving money away in this thread, I will "lock" you in my dungeon and keep you there until you have given me ALL of your money - or something in kind ;)

quoting allows the readers to know which post is being referred to. Simple as.

Just sayin'.

Yes, but even then it only takes a few seconds to delete non-pertinent parts and putting in an ellipsis or ellipses. There's one example of a very long (and long in the tooth) joke posted on another thread and the person that replies manages to take up almost an entire page with two posts.

The class continued so wasn't quite sure if the instructor was down on the forums in general or was commenting on the "survey" threads given the subject of the class. Either way, imo, it gave a bad impression of the forums to the class.

I'm surprised when I mention the forums in SL and see how many people have never heard of them.

The quote you gave seemed more a warning to not try to use the forums as a shortcut. The 'do your research for you' comment is entirely appropriate.

And this is a very nice butterfly indeed:

Ummm, isn't that the breast stroke? Which segues back to that one kitten picture...

I disagree. Nothing was achieved by locking it as the gross picture was in the past - the thread had been continuing quite happily since then. And, of course, the picture still remained. Also, Millie didn't lock it "until someone who had those abilities could perform cleanup on it". She stated that the thread is killed. Her full post is repeated in the title of this thread. I.e. it wasn't an interim measure.

Ok I see what you mean, and I won't disagree with you then. That late after the fact I probably would've just made the call for a quiet cleanup on the pics (if I thought they were in poor taste for the overall forum but hadn't violated any rule) and then left it alone.

That said, I also have to agree with Jesse in that moderating really is a shit job, especially if you don't have the time to stay on top of everything or don't really want to be doing it. In those cases, both moderators AND members need to have a little more tolerance with each others actions within the rules.

Nope - watch the arm positions in this video and compare to the picture of Phelps.

In a nutshell, the thread is off topic and should have been locked and should have stayed locked for that reason, not because of the gross picture. Not that I don't like the kitten pics, but that's basically it. But this forum has become the Wild West and almost anything goes, so, who knows what the rules are anymore.

Yes, moderating is a $#!+ job and it's going to make just about everyone unhappy at some point. I feel for Millie and Cybin, as they only step in when there is a 4-alarm fire, usually, but still... if you're going to do it, do it right.

You DID! At the end, just before I turned to leave, you reached out your arms, fists clenched into little balls and asked me to come nearer.....you lowered one arm 'til your tiny little arthritic-appearing fist touched mine and RETURNED ALL MY LINDENS. I was flabbergasted and quickly thanked you then left. You mean to tell me you remember NONE of it?? Not even the part where you gave me full power over the bot army AND all your Linden assets?? Boy are YOU in for a surprise when next you log in!! ;)

Hell, you must have been damed good! So good that it made this Yorkshireman give you actual money (I feel a bit faint). Don't tell anyone, for goodness sakes, or I'll be exiled from Yorkshire :(

I just wish I could remember it. Were my eyes open during it?

"Hoss" walked slowly down the dusty main street to the local watering hole. This was a rough town, and he never knew who might be lurking between the wooden storefronts and shadowy alleys. He turned into the tavern, when a sudden sound from the dim interior made him dive for cover. A second later, it came again... a plaintive mew... someone inside the smokey bar had pulled out a kitten.

Great Scott! You were with the wrong guy! I've never worn a flat cap in my life. It disappeared from the Yorkshiremen's uniform a very long time ago. I wonder who the imposter was

Getting flashbacks from the movie "Brassed Off" (a great movie, btw) as that is the only time I've heard a Yorkshireman referred to. ;)

Patrick Stewart (Capt. Jean Luc Picard of Star Trek) is also a Yorkshireman - born about 9 miles from me. I'm in danger of his fame surpassing mine :(

I was just trying to find the place where I lived in Yorkshire. The village was Cotherstone in Teesdale and the nearest town Barnard's Castle, which I seem to remember is in Co. Durham. I found the village but I couldn't find the old stone cottage where I lived in 1969. Which was disappointing as it was a very small place back then and I expected it to be easy... It's still small but it doesn't look the same.

It was a very pretty area and village. But I was always miserably cold and also always wanting to go somewhere where I could dance. I'd love to go back now and visit.

Google Maps has:

Cotherstone, Barnard Castle, Durham, United Kingdom

at their highest satellite resolution, down to the cottage level.

I just realized that I forgot to mention that Google maps Satellite view was where I was looking.
It's a small village and the house where I lived should have been ridiculously easy to spot. In fact it was so weird that I couldn't find it that after I made that post I kept trying to figure it out and eventually did realize which house it is. It looks the way I remember but apparently it's set back from the road more than I remember. I wish there was street view there. It's pretty cool "going back" there like that.

Google World (the satellite view) only shows detail in certain parts. It shows people in the area where I live. They aren't very clear but they are people.

On the BBC news a few weeks ago was a bit about someone who looked up their house on Google Earth. When the zoomed in on it they could see their dog in the garden!

There's a fascinating view of Gloucester Docks where the angles of the buildings change where they merged shots. I can *not* find the join!!
