FOX News is gonna RUIN SL with this video!

Well, we can ALL agree that Mark Kirk is something of a sleaze, I think, and that he's badly misrepresenting SL.

I don't know if SL is undergoing a sea change right now or not. It may be, as someone posted on the Zindra thread, that the good old days of the "Wild West" in SL are over. Or, it may be business more or less as usual 6 months from now.

But if things ARE changing, there is another way to look at it. SL IS a community, and one that is becoming more and more diverse. And the kind of upheavals it is undergoing right now are, perhaps, just an instance of an evolving community trying to work out what its values are, just as RL cultures do. In the final analysis, whatever the result, I think the conversations are GOOD: no one's assumptions (including mine) about what is good or bad for SL should be left unexamined or unchallenged.

Yeah, I know there's such a concept as a fiscal republican, just like there's such a concept as a labor-centric democrat - but honestly; those folks got rudely shoved out of their respective parties decades ago; they just haven't realized it yet.

even though it's a year old I loved the bit about "preventing kids from circumventing parental oversight by using a public access computer"... guess he hasn't been to many "public access computers" because they are generally locked down to almost unusability (except to the people that bother to learn how to circumvent those protections... it's not hard to learn or to do)

the sad thing here is that this guy still gets listened to even now. idiots are fine... they're good for a laugh (and for detecting other idiots who jump right on their bandwagon)... idiots in power are deadly...

what do I see coming out of this? more new idiotic laws that draft impossible requirements, but offer no solutions, that all the little guys will have to attempt to implement anyway, until one of the big guys does a cost analysis that says that challenging it as a Sisyphean task will be cheaper than playing along. then there'll be a long wait before some court goes "gee you're right" and blow the whole thing away... meanwhile everyone else is out an assload of cash for no sane reason. (and of course you can bet solid that said congresscritters will be collecting all that cash by the barrel with their fingers in limited run companies that provide half assed solutions, and bail out before the verdict comes back)

LL, with their bungling, lack of professionalism and general incompetence will do in SL long before any Congressman or television network.

For what it's worth, Tormented Twilight (the guy who accidentally necroposted the thread) is the one who made the swirling-cubes avatar that I sometimes use when visiting a place that my regular kid av might not be well received. He's pretty cool.

Was posted June 23rd. Although it might be old. I didn't watch the whole thing. The first thing this guy does is call Second Life a social networking site like myspace and facebook, so you know stupidity is going to continue from there.

Yeah, it's actually hard to tell because it is pretty much the same things he said last year, but it could be he's just repeating himself again recently. There was a row at the time here because many kid avs believed the congressman's protests would result in an imminent LL crackdown/more restrictions/discrimination against child avatars; Kirk's concerns were actually over RL children observing adult content on SL, he didn't say anything about child avs, but the connect-the-invisible-dots reasoning is representative of a somewhat paranoid atmosphere back then.

I dunno if that is so stupid a statement. It seems some of the boys in Frisco want SL to be just that, or at least integrated with those things.

I have to say, with my hat on as a late-90's real life purveyor of genuinely physical places for depraved perverts to meet, greet and exchange bodily fluids: we NEVER did well while we carefully and caringly declared and monitored who we sold to. All that stuff about being sensible about marketing materials or making sure we had opted-in verified eyes-only, yada yada, got us nowhere. On the other hand, when a newspaper wrote a stern and disapproving opinion piece on us and told the readers how dangerous, untrustworthy and debauched we were - THEN we were snowed under with membership requests!

I think there are layers of adulthood here. At the simplest level there is the "keep the kiddies out" thing; then there is the "don't play kiddy fantasy games" thing; then there is the "don't draw the attention of the nutjob reflex-thinker Family Protectors" thing... and lastly, there is the "some social structures just can't be shown in a positive light, so learn that people read between the lines" thing.

I think this is the last kind of adulthood. People who want SL style adventure, learn to read between the lines. Those who don't learn that skill, appear on Jerry Springer...
