I won't apologize for advising the OP should "lurk-moar". I was actually the second person to do so.
The OP has 300+ posts already. It's a bit late to advise him/her to "lurk-moar", don't you think? Might I suggest that, instead of jumping on someone else's little wagon, you actually do a modicum of research first; i.e. look at the first post ;) Will we see an admission of a mistake from you?

... but the when-in-Rome principle holds.
I agree. In this case, Rome is this forum, and this forum does not require, or desire, people to get used to things here before posting. Check with LL if you don't believe me. It's their forum. This is not "the people's forum". The people do not decide what happens here. The people do not create any sort of etiquette here. The people haven't created any sort of community here that new people need to fit in with. Any ideas that we regular users dictate anything here is sheer arrogance.

So, when in Rome (this forum), post straight away if you have something to say or ask. There is no need to lurk first.

The only merit in lurking a while here is that it will reveal the nastiness of some of the regulars, which will cause some people to stay out of it altogether, and look for answers elsewhere.

If only by lurking more, the OP would have already known who to put on ignore and saved themselves the grief. There would have been no need to respond and none of this would have gone downhill.

Yes, guilty, I didn't spot that the OP had posted 315 times. I was replying to another poster, not to her post.

My point was, and still is, The Forum Is What It Is..

I don't know from netiquette and communities, but we certainly do not want residents to take away from this thread that they need to lurk before asking their question. This forum must be first and foremost welcoming to real residents with real questions about SecondLife.

That's not to say there's nothing to be learned here for a new poster. When one asks a question, one can't assume that all responses will be serious, nor on point, so it's not productive to take umbrage at getting a silly answer. (If one doesn't understand why some answers might be silly, then yes, a little lurking will enlighten. Or, better than lurking, actually trying to answer a few resident questions. If one isn't soon overwhelmed by a compulsion to be silly, one needs a rectal stickectomy.)

And, if one asks for help (on a forum or in RL), better results obtain if one doesn't make it nigh unto impossible for anybody to actually provide that help.

The only merit in lurking a while here is that it will reveal the nastiness of some of the regulars, which will cause some people to stay out of it altogether, and look for answers elsewhere.

Regardless of post count, the OP displayed a severe lack of understanding the target audience. I can personally attest you can fluff up a post count easily, 300 is low. A modicum of research would indicate the user is only a couple months old. Further research indicates only about half those 300 posts are in RA. Some can get a feel for a place in minutes...some need a little "moar".

As far as mistakes go, I do it all the time. Initially I thought the OP was deliberately trolling. A few posters said they offered to help and were ignored. Hence I posted asking if anyone had even seen the club. Rha said she had, so I was wrong. *shrug* I go on what info is available at the time. If info is missing, mistakes get made. I move on.

http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/01/19/the-linden-answers-forum-has-closed/
just in case you weren't aware, Linden Answers is closed. You can't ask them. Not here anyway. There is Resident Answers. Which makes that , by definition, a Residents' forum.

That "only merit" you admit is a small, ugly, but accurate aspect of what I'm getting at. If you can't handle the flak you might get on a public forum, then for your own health, don't post it. I don't like that idea, but then my skin is far too thick to even know what that's like. But the truth is, if you have fair skin stay out of the kitchen. Along those lines a few posters have offered advice that if the OP can't handle adversity, club ownership is not a wise career move. That is sound advice, but it would appear the OP won't receive it due to their own actions. Why ask a question if you are unwilling to listen to the answers? But that's another one of those common sense things that's not written anywhere.

I can get behind alot of what you said. And for the most part I actually wish Phil's view was the case, it just isn't. A new user wouldn't learn anything from this thread unless they read first and post second. That's all I mean. Now how much is enough is a very interesting question. I don't know. For me, a little goes a long way. But I also have a thick skin if I missed something and stuff-up. So lurkiness is inverse to skin-thickness somehow. It's also not an on/off thing per se. Read abit, post something low key, read some more, answer a question or two you might have stumbled across in your travels, read some more, etc. The best thing a new user could take away from this thread IMO is "Ease into it". If it looks that I'm advocating a rule be placed that one must lurk for X number of days, that's not at all what I'm going for.

It will probably sound strange coming from me, but I don't think one need lurk before posting here. This is the Official SL Forum, for better or worse and this is the Reasidents Answers area. Anyone with a question should ask it. If you were walking down a street lost or injured, would you stop at a group of people and listen to their conversations before asking for help?

If this were a 3rd Party Forum like SLU, then I can see lurking abit,I did. But not here.
That being said, the Op could have asked her question in abetter way, and definitely over reacted to 2k, who was being, 2k. And subseqent posts showed the OP capable as being as rude as any of us, so I call it all a wash. But I do recommend a thickish skin for anyone posting on internet forums, based on my limited experience.

She never admits to even being mistaken, let alone wrong. She ignores those parts and adds more poison. It's what she does in this forum. Plenty of people here know it. She doesn't add anything to discussions, and she doesn't let go until she's had her fill, so I suggest putting her on your ignore list.

I think we could replace the name "Collette" with "Phil" and the "she" with "he". It would be correct, also.

*chuckles* The OP's best reaction to that would have been none. Simply ignore 2k and waited until something sane came along.

I'm cutting the OP slack, because having a post like that being the first response doesn't bode well in the mind. I'm pretty sure the OP excepted a negative critiques, just not the useless one right off the bat.

Agreed.
And the Op made a post in another thread suggesting that there may be cause to to give emotional considerations to them.

Not at all. I sometime post apologies and post that I was mistaken. I've never seen Colette do anything remotely similar. I don't twist and invent things like Colette does. I don't ignore the parts that I can't refute, like Colette does. All in all, there's no similarity at all between Colette's posts and mine.

Target audience? What target audience? The post was aimed at all residents that can access these forums. Perhaps the OP thought that there are enough normal people here that it was worth asking for the critique.

From: Vampaerus Wysznik
I can personally attest you can fluff up a post count easily,
Of course it is. It happens in probably most forums. What you need to attest to is that the OP's 300+ posts were of that kind. Otherwise, what you said is a waste of time.

From: Vampaerus Wysznik

April to now is significantly more than "a couple of months". You need to do some further research ;)

From: Vampaerus Wysznik
Further research indicates only about half those 300 posts are in RA. Some can get a feel for a place in minutes...some need a little "moar".
So around 150 posts in RA, and 4 months isn't sufficient for the OP to have got a feel for the forum? Do forgive me, but I disagree completely with you.

From: Vampaerus Wysznik

No it doesn't. RA is an LL forum. Period.

Just to stick my nose in here....I was blasted several times when i first asked questions here and was not expecting that from a section intended to offer help. From what I have seen, there are a select and active few who find the need to shoot first and ask questions later and that is sad. Because of that, when I post i intentionally try to take the high road and keep things in a positive and contructive vein. TBH I dont think this forum is the place for sarcasm and invectives esp directed at someone who is using this in the way it was intended - to ask for help or to ask a question.

I will guarantee you that those kinds of first experiences with this forum will keep many genuinely interesting questions from being asked. Too bad we cant all just try to help...:)

That is Phil's opinion of me only. It is hardly fact.

I have on numerous occasions admitted mistakes if I have made them. And I have apologized in posts if I felt they were needed.

What he really means by me not "admitting I am wrong" is that I will not say that Phil is always right. A mistaken belief on his part, which to anyone but Phil is clearly evident.

yeah that target audience. 2k clearly has access. ALL residents would be that community I talk about getting to know. Some are nice people, some aren't. The over reaction showed a lack of understanding that community. (as did the title)

I am still amazed at how nasty some people on these boards can be. Just sayin!

I agree, including the OP, who wasted a lot of space on 2k's silly post, while complaining about the distraction. Go figure. It's fine not to have a sense of humor; just ignore the jokes, unless you want to offend people.

Well, not 'amazed' so much as 'disappointed'.

I assumed 2Ks motivation was actually more than just simple trolling.

Since this asking for "Critics" for a club build could easily be seen as an advertisement for said club.

But instead of taking the Rules-lawyer "Advertisements are not allowed" approach he played his "humor" game.
