From: Trout Recreant Goddamn it. Who at LL thought that Recreant would make a good last name to add to the list!? Every time I see it I get a sick feeling in my stomach. Trout...this may sound crazy, but...could someone complain to LL that their OWN name was broadly offensive? I mean, if I call myself Phuckmei Sideways or something like that, I can pretty much expect that LL will be deleting my account pretty soon. Why not petition LL for a name change, if it bothers you that much?

Why not petition LL for a name change, if it bothers you that much? I would if I could figure out how. The word itself isn't offensive, though, and it doesn't upset anyone but me, so even if it were, it wouldn't be broadly offensive. There's no sexual connotations to it. It's incredibly offensive to me, but I doubt LL would be willing to help me out, especially when they have a policy about not changing names. I don't know what it would take to change the name anyway. I don't have any land holdings, but I have an SLX account and a Lindex account. I have lots of stuff that I suppose is all tied to my name, and a friends list. If they just go in and change the name, would that change all that stuff automatically?

Love - sometimes sincere, sometimes ironic, sometimes both. Sometimes *very* ironic.
Last name was just picked because flowed, and would be fairly easy to remember (and type).

Mine was done purely for the sound (klee-pong to-rok) that it made. I remember thinking at the time that Worf would have a good time with that name.

I was going to say, that sounds Klingon. Of course, I didn't know how to say it until you spelled said. Ah, me and the inability to say things correctly in my own mind.

From: Nicholas Lyndhurst Nicholas Lyndhurst is one of the best known comedy actors in the UK. I saw the surname and was surpised to find that Nicholas was available and took it.
As he is very well known here but not so much in other parts of the world, It makes it easy for me to recognise fellow Brits as they can't resist saying "Hello Rodney". (His best known character).
Sometimes I wonder if I perhaps shouldn't have "stolen" his name, but if I hadn't, sombody else would, and I'm quite a fan so maybe it is ok.
I'm often asked if I'm the REAL Nicholas Lyndhurst, to which I usually reply "Well I am here in SL". Rodney, you plonker! (and I'm a yank...shhhh..marrried to a brit in RL, though and he got me hooked on that show..I love it!) OT now....I liked the last name Jewell. When I joined in February, these names had been there for quite a while, I guess, because a lot of the last names just weren't very appealing to me. I really wanted Garnet (or some variation) because I was born in January, but that was taken as was Sapphire, etc. I thought Sunni sounded really nice for some reason....kind of wanted a name to represent who I am in RL and who I intended to be in SL. Since I'm overall a happy person...Sunni fit. I really wanted to use my RL husband's SL last name, which is Arcadia, but that one was gone between the time he joined in November, 2006 and when I joined in Feburary, 2007. I have an alt with a cool name, but Sunni is my main identity and for some reason I feel a connection to her and that name....weird, huh?

Once upon a time (mumble) years ago. . .
09-27-2007 09:44
A friend and I entered a "combat robot contest" sponsored by a local institute of inebriation and higher learning. One day while testing "Iron Pants B!tch!" (A pet name he had given his wife during the early days of their courtship.) He (my friend) decided it would be amusing to run me down with the near completed robot.
So I side stepped, back stepped, over stepped and other wise stepped around this heavy metal framework of exposed wiring and mekaniks, so as not to fall on it and damage something fragile and irreplaceable, (such as myself) while making my way over to him with the intention of taking the remote control from his hands and braining him with it.
Later on when we went inside to order a pizza, his wife was watching some Kevin Costner movie. At one point, he indicated me and said "This my friend danceswithrobots."
A week later when we posed for team pictures, he wrote "DancesWithRobots" on my name card. It stuck for the rest of the competition.
Later, when I remembered it when I decided that a little anonymity on the internet could be a good thing.

Phoenix, because of its resurrection connotations (I came back from near death after a head-on car wreck in 2002) and I liked it better than Jesus or Gandalf. Psaltery because of the musical reference (a psaltery is an ancient instrument similar to a lyre) and also because I like the double letter thing. P2

My name sounds sort of breezy and romantic but before emigrating to SL one of the last things I did in RL was to help trim a conifer hedge. Dada just looked like a bland, neutral surname. Conifer Dada - has a certain ring to it, I think!

I wanted a first name that was easy to type and so the letters z a s where close together and fast. When putting them together that sounded good and Zazas was made. Most people want to say Za Zas like in the movie star Gabor's but that is not how mine is pronounced. Saying it with Z (how Z is used in the name Zuse)and (sounding like SAW only with a Z) and the "AS" sounding like "US" had a good ring to it. I know trying to type it out how to say it is kinda confuseing but I hope you could understand it. And the only last name that really went with it on the list was Oz so that is how I came up with Zazas Oz.

Variation of my RL first name, and a variation of my RL...nickname.... I wanted something that is an extension of my RL self for my main avatar. My alt, Rhian Jenkins, got her name due to my affinity to Wales (I lived there) and the name is actually something I dreamt about. Ahem. From: Michael Bigwig On a side note--I named my first group 'Owsla.'
I loved Watership Down as a kid and, erm, still cry when I read it.... @Incanus: Well, as a Tolkien scholar, I recognised the name! From: Raymond Figtree My brilliant uncle, Raymond Einhorn, died right before I joined SL. I named myself in his honor and Figtree was the closest last name I could find. What do fig trees and unicorns have in common??? @Mari: I still find it funny, the only RL Marianne I know is my mum! From: Lindal Kidd I mean, if I call myself Phuckmei Sideways or something like that, I can pretty much expect that LL will be deleting my account pretty soon.
Oooh, thanks...I had a vision of Ray's crab and can now try to get the tea off the keyboard...

The image I have for your name is that of a knight in armour. You have a coat of arms that goes something along the lines of: Argent with trout recreant between four or chevrons. I'm boring. My SL first name is my RL first name, and I picked Metropolitan because it did not sound silly and there was nothing that sounded anything like my RL last name (Henderson) available.
It only occured to me later, I would get the inevitable "Carl Metrosexual" jokes.

Though I wish I'd thought at the time to create an alt with the same last name. I think it would be really cool to also own "Alt Metropolitan".

In various other forums and online interest groups I've been involved with, I've always used my real first name, and typically a shortened version of my real last name... I just find it simpler that way. I've never been good at adopting an alternate persona or role playing... I'd be a terrible actress. So I originally wanted to go with something as close to my real first & last names as I could, but after searching up and down the list and trying various combinations, I got frustrated and finally decided to just take something completely different. I enjoy learning about various aspects of Japanese culture and saw Toshihiko as a nice sounding last-name on the list. I knew what Atashi meant as a first name. I liked the sound of it all together, so I went with that. Unfortunately I don't speak any Japanese, but my name must be 'realistic' sounding enough that when I visit Japanese sims, I frequently find myself having to apologize and explain that I don't know what people are saying when they start chatting with me. Now I'm so comfortable with my SL name that I have to double check my RL correspondence to ensure I haven't signed off with Atashi by mistake -Atashi

From: Trout Recreant I love SL, and I have a blast here in the forums. Every time I see my last name it pains me, but I have no option but to live with that. I had to look it up to find out what the 'real' meaning of the word is... even knowing the meaning, I still don't think of it like that. I honestly thought 'recreant' meant something like 'one who participates in recreation,' so that a 'trout recreant' would be a fisherman. Ilianexsi is a name I found a long time ago in a book of unusual baby names... it's a name I was using (at one time) for a demon character in a story I was writing, and I've used it as my online identity in a lot of places. Someone told me later that it comes from two Greek words which mean 'sun' and 'spring,' which is kinda cool. (Ilios=sun, and anoixi=spring, apparently.) Sojourner, I just chose because I liked the sound of it and the meaning. (Most people just call me Ilia, it's easier.)

From: Sae Luan My name (which is cursed for ALL djs to not say right *it's said like "sigh" not "say" ) came from a game called Fatal Frame 2, my most favorite game. Sae was the name of the ghost of a young girl that was sacrificed in a crazy ritual. http://www.fatalframe2.com/fatalFrame2/index2.html When I read your name I always thought "Say". Now I know better! Danceswithrobots...Love it!!! Poor Trout I just thought you chose it out of irony. My name...Te Arikinui means "Great Chief" in the Maori language, and I chose that name out of respect for Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu who was the longest ruling monarch of the Maori people (40 years). She did a lot of great work on behalf of her people and I have an immense respect for her as a woman and as a leader. She died the day before I joined SL. Although I'm Native American and not Maori, through my RL profession I fell in love with the Maori cultures, as well as their sister cultures from the South Pacific. And I wanted something unique with personal meaning. Adria...I picked because it went well with Arikinui. Every calls me Ari, which is the first syllable of my RL name. And most people can type Ari without massacring it My alt...well she is stuck with something flamboyant and silly...which suits her just fine. I don't think she could pull off a title like "Arikinui"...she's just too flashy and divalicious! ~Ari

It's all in the attitude. Thanks Sling. That actually makes me feel a little better about things. I owe everyone an apology. I'm sorry I went off on the name thing here in an otherwise interesting thread. It's something that just eats away at me, but it's my issue, not anyone else's and it's not fair of me to dump it here. I need to suck it up and stop acting like a whiny little kid. I guess I'm having one of those days where I don't want to sally forth, spit or spear anything. I want to curl up under my desk and hide until the crappy stuff goes away and I feel better, and I let those feelings (all completely unrelated to my last name in SL) take over in my responses to this thread. I honestly don't mean to be a jackass - but sometimes it just slips out like that. So carry on. It's interesting to see how people came up with their SL names. Quite the diverse group we have.
