There is an ad-farm at the hangout? I didn't notice. I was too busy playing with the jukebox and throwing pies. Glad you didn't notice. That is the point of the screens. : ) |

I think only myself and one other member were bothered by the old screens. If they don't bother anyone else then do what consensus dictates. _____________________

Land without things like that always looks nicer, IMO. More open, less segregated, stuff like that..

suggestion for ad farm problemos.
okay once upon a time the village idiot he lived on the mainland too and one day found himself surrounded by a herd of freerange ads. What was he to do ?? he paniced for a moment and then realized his land was pretty durn close to the water line so he made a swamp! He then put up a screened type area around the swamp and lived happily ever after with his mosquito netting, creaping vines and his bamboo hut on an island in the swamp. The he decided the swamp needed an alligator or something so he built a small winding path on stilts to the aligator pit/area place at the other end of the swamp with the screens that you really couldn't tell were screens cause of all the swamp vine hanging around. The alligator thrived and the idiot got trenchfoot but it became home anyhow.... He also sold a lot of drugs and the women complained the high humidity made their hair all frizzy! _____________________

Land without things like that always looks nicer, IMO. More open, less segregated, stuff like that.. Add me to the list of people who find our "sky screens" unattractive. In my opinion, they are far worse than the few flying boxes on the other side. Aside from the unattractiveness of giant screens in general, ours have the added problem of not being constructed well. I have revisited the site just now, so I am speaking about their current configuration. The prims used to build them are not aligned properly, so the seams between the prims are horribly obvious. Also, as I have mentioned before, the backside should be transparent to avoid griefing the neighbors. The builder of the current set has put a transparent texture on the backside, but failed to make the edges transparent. As a result, the screen is still visible from the other side, just as empty squares now. But even if we make the backside fully transparent, we are still showing a lack of concern for our neighbors to the north. A small screen is one thing, but ours is ridiculously high. The complaint that the floating ads on the other side are now also high is interesting, as the ads appear to be raised specifically to be as high or higher than our screen. Making our screen higher only worsens the situation for the residents on the other side. I completely support taking down the screens, but if most of the group wants them there, I beg the builders to have them rebuilt properly, and not so high as they are now. I will certainly volunteer my services... I'm not the most creative of builders, but I can align and texture screens with the best of them. ![]() |

actualy when I did screens I put like a log cabin texture on the outside but I only made them 10 meters high any higher was like a no no to me. I also put a roof on the entire thing so on the outside it looked like a log cabin to the neighbours. On the inside it was a swamp. On top of that the roof which was a usual sloped roof had a second application as an attic and that is where I had everone land. They then ported down into the swamp (kinda like a haunted house type deal) the top attic was like a little shop and bar and stuff. I dont know if that's too complicated for people but it made it look like a log cabin on the outside and the main area i used totally looked like a swamp. I wonder if i can find a photo of it if so I will post it. That is what I would do. The roof made it so that you actually pretty much had 20 meters and when inside the swamp you really had no idea that there was much beyond that because of the way it was designed and so it didn't feel claustrophobic.

It's all good. I placed a 50 meter screen to block the screen that's blocking the ad farm.

Screen still needed?
10-07-2007 04:25
Umm... Is the screen still needed? I did my best to deal with the adfarm, within the, uh, letter of the ToS, without buying the ad plots themselves. I chased one particularly petulant adfarmer all the way to the cloud layer.
(God help me, come WindLight... but luckily I've many prims left to burn. And I guess I could always script some particle clouds, if it comes to that.) But if the shiny blank tower thing isn't better than the screens, I'm very open to suggestions. |

My take on obscurring unsightly things surrounding a build (even though I wish we could find another venue for these discussions, because they're really quite OT for Resident Answers)
The site is already set up with pretty specific socializing areas, where people are either sitting or standing. Scenes such as the adfarm can be adequately obscured from view by placing more natural looking, lower profile barriers, such as trees, faux landscaping, etc. closer to our socializing areas. We will never be able to fully obscure such things. Such is the nature of mainland, and that is where we chose to set up shop. Attempting to obscure large, unnattractive objects with other large, unattractive objects seems to me to be rather counter-productive to our aesthetic desires. The large prim panels, no matter how tidy and well constructed/textured they are, are still that - large prim panels. They are more noticeable as a disruption to the contiguity of the landscape than as an aesthetic improvement to the "view". Furthermore, they are an imposition to surrounding property owners who might, and probably do, see them as nothing different than the ads themselves. Zap _____________________

Other than when flying, I haven't paid the panels much attention. As for adfarms, I usually just tune them out anyway.

Until reading this thread I was unaware that there was an ad farm next to the hangout. Either it's well concealed or my attention was just on the inside of our land.
I agree with much of what Zaphod says above. The approach of using closer, lower screening is used well in the real world. However if the Builders go that way, I would ask they keep in mind that some people--I can't believe I'm the only one--like to camera around the scene when hanging out and find it annoying to to be moving to a different angle and suddenly find my view in the middle of a tree. Aesthetics matter of course, but I personally go there for the avatars and activities. EDIT: PS: I saw a Neko in RL yesterday as I was driving down the street. |
