From: Melita Magic While the men here are (sort of) on the topic of differing beauty preferences, I'd like to ask the men: Is there a difference between what they profess to prefer and what they actually prefer? Do they feel societal pressure to choose a certain type? Or, does the type they prefer, differ from the majority consensus on female beauty in the region they live in (In real life)? Great question, Melita. And I'm guessing we might get some varied responses.

From: Weston Graves Anyway, it's not about one body type as much as it's about style and grace and what works best for the individual. Amen to that!

My tastes are simple really. pleasing to the eye of course, but it's not just the supermodel types...
I'm an odd one, it's mainly about how they carry themselves and as I get to know them personality plays a big part of it. (I am male so visual is usually first)
Show me a photo perfect model with no personality and carrys herself around like a sack of meat showing off... no thanks.
Show me the same girl with a don't care attitude about her looks and a fun personality 9no emo or aggro...) and I say hell yeah
body type for me is pretty much anything that isn't totally obese or the starved look.

From: Nina Stepford ?? 'african-american countries? i am awestruck. Sorry about that...I was typing too fast during that post (my mind works faster than my fingers) and was thinking about different countries and cultures and meant Hispanic and African-American cultures. If you go back and check that post, I corrected it (hopefully the time stamp will show before I got to this post). I re-read that too and went...gah!

I saw this avatar one day and it struck me as so oddly shaped I had to take a photo. (This was about a year ago.) A good example of odd proportions. I recall checking the person's profile and she was not a newbie. I wondered if this was the look she was actually striving for. The thing that struck me the most was the stick neck or maybe head too big for body...there's just something...odd looking, imo.

Anyone who's willing to answer, I'd be very curious to hear their thoughts. Since you are asking, I have similar criteria in rl as sl; mainly, a good profile, so no distinction between what I profess and what I pursue - or rather, allow to pursue me. I *do* feel social pressure to drop my standards ("Y do u thnk speling is imptnt?" but I am happy to disregard the increasingly redundant view of the 20th century sub-educationalist movement. That I like smart women does differ from the overwhelming majority in both sl and the UK, but perhaps that is because my felllow males are more pragmatic than I am: there just aren't that many clever females around. Pep (Prefers brunettes to blondes, but would rather have a bacon sandwich) PS What they actually look like in sl is irrelevant; next minute they can be completely different, so why worry?

About a year or so ago, there was a discussion on SLU about a group for Anorexics. Not a support group, but a group for people who wanted to look or were turned on my anorexics. It was pretty sickening. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case with that avater.

I've seen something like that on some cartoon show back when my kids were still watching Saturday morning cartoons. Beetlejuice maybe?

Beetlejuice maybe? I seem to remember the kids in Scooby Doo having the same "pencil neck emerging from roll neck" thing going on. Pep (Apparently girls with long necks make good strippers; no comment on employment prospects for giraffes in Las Vegas though.)

From: Viciously Llewellyn I'm 5'5" and about 105 pounds ...
I never go hungry, as a matter of fact I eat a lot.
Studies show that most thin to average weight people eat more than average to heavy people. The difference is activity level. Of course, baseline weights and metabolisms vary. Metabolisms can be raised or lowered but everyone does seem to have a base weight and shape their body tends to return to or hover around. Twiggy never had that pinched look that people who 'starve' themselves have. She still is slender, also, so I believe her that she had that shape naturally. To Mr. Daniels - Triple Nine? Or just witty and clever in conversation? (There are a fair amount of women in Mensa but few in the 99th percentile Hi-Q societies. I've heard first hand from the women who ARE in those, it's like a steak hit the pirhana tank when they attend meetings.)

From: Oryx Tempel I don't hate on thin. Yeah, give us skinny folks a break. After all, it's not easy being skinny. Just try opening a door on a windy day and watch as it whips your body around like a cartoon! Or go for a swim in 80 degree water and have blue lips after an hour, while everyone else is still trying to cool off. Worse, get sick and can't eat -- well, I won't go into it but it's no fun. Until I turned 40, I was 6'1" and 140 lbs (or less if I hadn't been exercising much). Fortunately I put on 30 lbs in a couple years back then, so I no longer look like a possible AIDS victim. So, have pity on us skinnies. We hate fat people only because we envy them! (We don't really hate fat people.)

From: Oryx Tempel There are lot of stars out there this thin nowadays. Pretty sad. Yes most of them are what even industry folk call "lollipops" - big head, stick body. Thanks for the pix of The Shrimp. I read her autobiography - in later years she ran a B & B, I think. She considered herself plump at a size 12. Veruschka was a slightly different model. Six feet tall, strong, muscular build. She can be briefly seen in the film "Blow Up," I think, and - was she in "Midnight Cowboy"? I don't recall where I read about her... Pep: A good profile? Ha, you made that word carry double weight, didn't you. I assume in RL you mean it literally. Do you prefer a classic profile? What do you consider "good"? What might be really fun is if people would link to pix examples of what they consider 'the ideal' - in face and in body. Back to SL shapes and faces, if anyone's wants tweaking, I love doing that type of thing. I can critique, or I can try to make you one if you're desperate, or, try to help you shop. (Yes, I'm SL-bored lately.)

From: Melita Magic <snip> Pep: A good profile? Ha, you made that word carry double weight, didn't you. I assume in RL you mean it literally. Do you prefer a classic profile? What do you consider "good"? <snip> I love words and make them work as hard as possible. If words were meant to only have one meaning then what would be the point of the word "ambiguous"? What is a "classic" profile? I remember when a friend of mine brought his fiancee over from Trinidad and she hated London, because she thought she was the epitome of Trinidadian beauty - small breasts and huge bum - yet there were hundreds of thousands of pear shaped women here, who she saw as competition initially until she realised that British men weren't particularly enthusiastic about that shape. She returned to the Caribbean very soon afterwards. Personally, I am serious about being more interested in the intellect than the shell it temporarily inhabits, but there is a connection; I have said that appearance is ephemeral, but I have been known to offer compliments regarding tastefulness equating to tastiness, since if you are smart then you can probably make yourself look smart. (Yes, ambiguity again!) Pep (I also think that vanity tends to trump taste, as evidenced by most of the pics in the Undying Thread.)
