Staying Home to watch the Inaguration?

A bit of info on the history of it:

According to Snopes, this essay was not written by an Australian, dentist or otherwise. It was written by Peter Ferrara, associate professor of law at the George Mason University School of Law in Northern Virginia. It was published by National Review on September 25th, 2001, twenty-four days after the attack by terrorists and what is now referred to as “9/11”. As it has been passed around, additional comments and text has been added – even the title being changed. The original title: “What is an American?”


It is a very nice piece.

It reminds me of this one, that came out in the early 70's. It's obviously dated, but it did say something from the times.

To Kill an American
You probably missed this in the rush of news, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper, an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.

So an Australian dentist wrote an editorial the following day to let everyone know what an American is . So they would know when they found one. (Good one, mate!!!!)

'An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish , Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani or Afghan.

An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans.

An American is Christian , or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims i n America than in Afghanistan.The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses.

An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.

An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world.
The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence , which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.

An American is generous. Americans have helped o ut just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.


When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country!


As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan .
The national symbol of America , The Statue of Liberty , welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, temp est tossed. These in fact are the people who built America


Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11 , 2001 earning a better life for their families. It's been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 different countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists.
So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo , and Stalin , and Mao Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself . Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.

the day the dixie chicks said that one thing about the war..at the town square people threw their CD's on the street..i remember them being there for the longest time..
i remember thinking .wow a lot of people liked the dixie chicks..
then almost a week later they put in the paper and signs around the square to stop throwing their cd's in the street..

i kept mine though..i liked the dixie chicks music and they were just expressing how they felt..
maybe their timing could have been better though

I have read this before, but had never actually heard the recording of it. I love his passion expressed in it.

I think it should be broadcast periodically here in the US just to remind many of our own of what we are really all about - and how we really do compare to other nations.

Yeah, I never did get rid of my Dixie Chicks CDs. I see no reason to trash good music just because I don't agree with their political viewpoint.

I liked them too 'til they pissed me off- I loved Earl must die or what ever that was called. I heard some crap recently about Toby too though there is so much junk floating around who knows what is or isn't true.

i wish recording artists wouldn't even get on camera or do anything but what they are good at..
i don't care what they think other than what they were thinking when they wrote the songs..or actors and actresses..
they act and thats where it ends with me..most if you look may have spent their time in drama classes while i was spending mine in history or social studies or political science..


i try to remember that every time one gets on their high horse lol

What really, really gobsmacked me about New Orleans and Katrina was
1) How little the USA did to help New Orleans
2) That the greed of property developers destroyed natural defences

The US administration did little for New Orleans and couldn't deal with the offers of help from other nations.

ya they had gotten the money for the levies but used it elsewhere if i remember right..
that town was the capitol of corrupt..

s'always someone else's fault right? how about following up/enforcing expenditures? guess that went the way of deregulating the markets.

if you don't follow up, then likely your intended projects will get corrupted. and then, the implication is that you yourself are corrupt. ipso facto quid pro quo, and all that jazz...

without a doubt, bama's got the unfortunate title of 'will be the most closely watched administration ever.' these are careful steps for now. the always-rabid/ready-to-take-any-side conspiracy theorists are already jumping on the oath argument... let 'em, dammit idiots... where were they for 2000 and the supreme court decision?
