From: LittleMe Jewell A bit of info on the history of it: According to Snopes, this essay was not written by an Australian, dentist or otherwise. It was written by Peter Ferrara, associate professor of law at the George Mason University School of Law in Northern Virginia. It was published by National Review on September 25th, 2001, twenty-four days after the attack by terrorists and what is now referred to as “9/11”. As it has been passed around, additional comments and text has been added – even the title being changed. The original title: “ What is an American?” It is a very nice piece. It reminds me of this one, that came out in the early 70's. It's obviously dated, but it did say something from the times. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ_okAgAUGE

I have read this before, but had never actually heard the recording of it. I love his passion expressed in it. I think it should be broadcast periodically here in the US just to remind many of our own of what we are really all about - and how we really do compare to other nations.

From: Amaranthim Talon I was emailed this- may or may not be as attributed- i didn't bother to look but i did like the sentiment and this seems and apt place to put it:
~~~~~~~~ Written by an Australian Dentist
To Kill an American You probably missed this in the rush of news, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper, an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.
So an Australian dentist wrote an editorial the following day to let everyone know what an American is . So they would know when they found one. (Good one, mate!!!!)
'An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish , Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani or Afghan.
An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans.
An American is Christian , or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims i n America than in Afghanistan.The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses.
An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.
An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence , which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.
An American is generous. Americans have helped o ut just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.
When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country!
As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan . The national symbol of America , The Statue of Liberty , welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, temp est tossed. These in fact are the people who built America
Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11 , 2001 earning a better life for their families. It's been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 different countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists. So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo , and Stalin , and Mao Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself . Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American. that was all over town back when that went on.. you could not turn in any direction without getting a copy. the day the dixie chicks said that one thing about the war..at the town square people threw their CD's on the street..i remember them being there for the longest time.. i remember thinking .wow a lot of people liked the dixie chicks.. then almost a week later they put in the paper and signs around the square to stop throwing their cd's in the street.. i kept mine though..i liked the dixie chicks music and they were just expressing how they felt.. maybe their timing could have been better though
I see no reason to trash good music just because I don't agree with their political viewpoint.
I tried to get rid of my wife's Dixie Chick CD's... but that was before they decided to run their mouths. Can't stand the nasaly whiney voice of the lead singer.
I liked them too 'til they pissed me off- I loved Earl must die or what ever that was called. I heard some crap recently about Toby too though there is so much junk floating around who knows what is or isn't true.
(sorry hon, just pulling your quote 'cuz it's the closest thing handiest ;0 ) - any more or less than -any one- else just 'flapping their mouths'? any free citizen?? look, i agree and i'm no better - i've got a list of people that i don't listen to anymore, because they've proved themselves rather incapable of running things in a manner that's positive to the growth of the country/hence the human race. they're called 'conservatives'. they'll try to rebrand themselves, but that's so early-ninties it just proves how far behind the curve they are. the kids are a lot smarter now - if there's anything to thank the past eight years for, it's that. kewl, inadvertently jump-started the human race... 'good job'. 'fascist liberalism' - good god, you think we're gonna kill ya with pillows? ;0 unclench your fists, like the man said... in other words, "CHILL THE EFF OUT!!" ;0 dragged, kicking and screaming you will, into the current millenium... ;0 into a better world, you resist... GET YOUR FILTHY HANDS OFF MY ICE CREAM! PUT YOUR FILTHY MIND IN MY HANDS WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH IT'S A SMOKESCREEN THAT NOBODY UNDERSTAND - revolting cocks
i was meaning that i would rather see their movies and listen to their music rather than them use the media like MTV or other places where it is suposed to be about the music.. MTV is not even the music television channle..it's reality tv..
putting up some star that someone may idol and swaying their fans to hate something or like it is not responsible..they reach a lot bigger area than most americans..i know their voice carries farther than mine or anyones here with a mic and camera on them all the time..with that comes responsibility and a lot don't use it..
if there was not such a one sided approach in opinions it would be one thing but sending a message to people that it is black or white and there is no middle is just wrong.. Not all are black and white in that sense.. some don't care about the peer pressure of others around them and risk it putting out there is a gray area..
conservative or liberal..both parties are wacked when you get to the far ends of each side where their extremists live in the black and white.. both filled with endless conspiracy theories that anyone with a brain can see as someone off the deep end of a brain washing..
each side has it's good points..and both have their bad.. i happen to really get tired of the conservatives more than anything..for more reasons than the countries shape it is in..because anyone that took the time to learn why we are in the financial shape we are in would realize it's been a long time coming and both DEM and REP conservative and liberal are to blame..
i'm tired of conservatives mainly because i am surrounded by them..but because there is another option does not mean it is the best either.. they are both relative and from what i see there is just as much bullcrap on both sides.. anyone that makes a choice because of a party or because it's what brittny or whoever would do is not using their freedom..but then again if they are that easily swayed then i guess it is thier option too.. anyone talking from one side of their mouth that conservative is the way to go or liberal is half paralized to the freedom of seeing the whole thing for what it is.. the freedom that we don't have to fall for the crap flowing from either side but pointing fingers.. because not one is better than the other like they think they are.. they just change popularity with time because of us that do choose to make them popular..the undecided
I think it should be broadcast periodically here in the US just to remind many of our own of what we are really all about - and how we really do compare to other nations. What a load of old cobblers that piece was. Dangerous nationalistic self-delusional propoganda it was!! It's not more near the truth than was that idiot who posted in another thread about Barak HUSSEIN Obama. That YouTube shite is on the same level of intellectual rigour. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/28/AR2007042801113.html"Many of the U.S. diplomats who received the message, however, were beginning to witness a more embarrassing reality. They knew the U.S. government was turning down many allies' offers of manpower, supplies and expertise worth untold millions of dollars. Eventually the United States also would fail to collect most of the unprecedented outpouring of international cash assistance for Katrina's victims." http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2005-09-05-aid-katrina_x.htmextract - "...Among them was Bangladesh, which Monday pledged $1 million." That's big bucks for a place like Bangldesh. What really, really gobsmacked me about New Orleans and Katrina was 1) How little the USA did to help New Orleans 2) That the greed of property developers destroyed natural defences The US administration did little for New Orleans and couldn't deal with the offers of help from other nations. Was the disaster avoidable? http://www.asce.org/files/pdf/ERPreport.pdf
From: Ceka Cianci ya they had gotten the money for the levies but used it elsewhere if i remember right.. that town was the capitol of corrupt.. s'always someone else's fault right? how about following up/enforcing expenditures? guess that went the way of deregulating the markets. if you don't follow up, then likely your intended projects will get corrupted. and then, the implication is that you yourself are corrupt. ipso facto quid pro quo, and all that jazz... without a doubt, bama's got the unfortunate title of 'will be the most closely watched administration ever.' these are careful steps for now. the always-rabid/ready-to-take-any-side conspiracy theorists are already jumping on the oath argument... let 'em, dammit idiots... where were they for 2000 and the supreme court decision? logical-gate dead-enders, the lot of 'em... ;0
