"I cant believe we depate the interpretation of certain passages of a Gor book as if it was the bibble. Hey guys, its fiction, nothing more. Its not the bible, the bible is based (most of it) on a real peoples history not on a fictious planet invented by a fiction writer - that makes a big difference dont you think so?" It would make a difference if we knew the facts stated in the Bible were real. We take it on faith that what is written is true. We also take it on faith that nothing important is missing, Like God saying, this is what I first intended but realized that this is better ... [insert Gor philosophies here]. I dont believe John Norman believed people would actually live his stories. I believe he intended to write out his feelings and ideas on teh weakness in society. Then again I dont believe the Roman Emporer who oversaw the gathering of the documents for the first Christian Bible thought I wonder if the whole world will read and then most emulate what is put into this book? Oh - wait that is what happened. That's why I fel important facts were omited and words were changed to govern man according to a Pagan Emporer who compromised with Christians so that he could prevent Civil unrest. But enough of that soap box. Steps down. As far as the intention being entertaining, I find most of this very entertaining. What I dont find entertaining is the few people who come in to Bash Gor and cant defend their arguements with reason. Not stating you do, there have been posts. but, entertain on ....

From: Angelique laFollette It's a VERY Common Misconception even Among Gorean that Free Women must be at all times Pliant, Aquiescent, and Quietly Respectful to thier male Counterparts. This misconception comes about from reading the Books, and Yet Only taking with one the concepts that reinforce ones own prejudices. Here are a few of MANY quotes within the books that are diametricly Opposed to the View that free Women have no Voice in Gorean Society. Angelique, I smile brightly at you  To expect RL Gorean women to bow down and and meekly accept -never mind the fictional - is inconceivable, if a collar called them, they would be in it by choice. Spades - very good points - /me smiles. Learning is all and a path without end. IWYW A {Aside from all that- me thinks there has been a thread highjack in here somewhere...is it Friday yet?}

I did find it funny I was accused of lacking an open mind on that one example of what Gor is. I guess they didn't see the other ones?
I think I included the nicer version of SL roleplay in one of them.
The OP doesn't really want the cynical SL RP review about Panthers even though she asked , trust me.

Been there. Done that. Not for me. I find it presumptious to try and persuade or disuade anyone from that life style. Magdalena sounds like she is having fun and I am very happy for her. Truely. She sounds like someone I would enjoy getting to know better. Why should I try to convience her that gor is not real BDSM or even try to foster that lifestyle choice on her anyway?
It's the fanatics and anti-fanatics that bug me. Religions, and goreans and Mac users. There are people lined up on both side willing to kill and die over the most trivial things when in the end, what ever MY choice is has not bearing on what they do. How does what sim I log on to effect your life one bit when we have never met anyway and never will?
It's all too silly for words.

I don't think anyone who spends much time in the forums would accuse you of not being open minded.

The OP doesn't really want the cynical SL RP review about Panthers even though she asked , trust me. I don't know why you're down on the Panthers. The Panthers weren't half bad this season. My brother is in North Carolina and gave me nothing but grief when they beat the Seahawks. Nice passing game, good running backs. A little more development and they have a good shot at going deep in the playoffs. They aren't going to be Superbowl contenders unless some of the stronger teams really fail, but they have a really nice squad and I would expect to see some great football next season. There. That's my review of the Panthers. If you want a really awful review, ask me about the Dolphins or the Falcons. Or the 49ers for that matter.

On a side note, when did "Eartheans" stop being Terrans?
We never were "Terrans", heck even my spell check doesn't like that word. Many Science Fiction Novels use different words humans who originate from Earth. Terran, Earthling, Earther, etc. The truth is there is simply no need for a term describing people from Earth different from people on other planets until such time occurs that humans are born on other planets (or perhaps on the moon or a space station.) A non-human alien could simply refer to us as human without needing to resort to those other terms. Especially since at the time of this posting all humans are from Earth. Once a significant portion of humans exist who were not born on Earth, they can come to a consensus of what to call us. I figure we have a while yet though so worrying about it is pretty silly. If we are just speculating my favorite is "People of the Earth" as used in the song "Children of the Sun."

I met a guy who was wandering around. Walked into my home and started chatting. Turns out, he's "owned" by a panther tribe. Why they let him wander around I don't know. He was asking a bunch of questions, and trying to fish RL information out, so I told him, "curiosity is unbecoming a Kajiri". After about a minute, he says that he doesn't know what that means. Turns out, he doesn't like the books. Just wants to play with Panthers. Ah, parhaps that's why they let him out. Kinda hoping he doesn't come back. No point except, WTF?
And for the OP, I smiled. Also smiled at Colette's posts.

Its not the bible, the bible is based (most of it) on a real peoples history not on a fictious planet invented by a fiction writer - that makes a big difference dont you think so? Normans books have one thing in common with my post: The intention is entertainment! Or does the book or Norman himself suggest its to be followed as a lifestyle or a phylosophy, never mind a religion? He (John Norman) must think himself: How bizarre, people try to actually live the content of my novels....... Just imagine me running through a real forest with a bow and shooting on men which i later torture, rape, and collar to be slave (thats basically what I do in SL as a panther). Or what would be (doing) my counter part in Real Life? So the Gorean horse got beaten beyond its death here? To me that horse seams to be pretty active for being dead. Just relax, and Join the Discussions. Spadesrun, What you say is true in that women Do have a somewhat restricted Role in Gorean society, But merely angering a Man has Never been Grounds to Collar. It has Frequently been the Cause of a Male Arranging circumstamces Underwhich he would have the Right to Collar, But merely angering him is Not Cause. A Woman May Attract this Kind of retaliation, But she also has to Fall Into the Mans Traps. a Proper Gorean Woman, Behaving according to the social Standards is at Little Risk. If one does not behave in a Fashion worthy of Enslavement, One avoids the Collar. Yes, In the Books Prideful Women are enslaved, BUT in Each, and Every case She eventually weakens herself, and behaves more like a slave than a Free. Some are taken in Battle, or Kidnapped, But this is another Matter. Slaves actually make up a minority of Gorean society. Less than 10% of the Populace. In Online Gor Cultures they Outnumber frees in some places three to One. This is primarily due to a Misreading of the Customs, and an Overemphasis on the Slavery aspect. Think of Ancient Rome,, a Culture that Possessed a Much higher slave to owner ratio than Gor, and Yet the Culture was Deep, and Rich, and had aspects and Facets Well beyond the simple exchange of Chain, or be Chained, Even though Roman Citizens every day Faced the Possibility of enslavement or death for a Multitude of legal Infractions. From: someone Amaranthim Talon Quote: Angelique, I smile brightly at you To expect RL Gorean women to bow down and and meekly accept -never mind the fictional - is inconceivable, if a collar called them, they would be in it by choice. Very true. I have Never Felt Gorean Steel on my throat, and have No desire to, I am FREE, and (In On Line terms) i would Kill, or Die before accepting the Collar. THAT is what Makes me a Gorean Free Woman. I Follow a Difficult Path, One of Honor, Dignity, Pride, One where i behave as a Proper Lady, Because my Very Freedom depends Upon it. For me to Fail, and be enslaved is a disservice, and Insult to All Free Women. Angel.

It just occurred to me I remember the term used by a Gorean for a person from Earth.
"Barbarian"
Which although it traces back to the Greek/Roman application of the term rather than today's use ..
Is rather ironic, since by todays use,
Most would consider men who fly in on giant birds, slash each other apart with swords and take women prisoners to be sex slaves to be the barbarians.

I'm curious as to where the idea came about that a woman had to anger a man inorder to be collared. and Thusly free women simply hadn't crossed that line of angering men and therefore had never been collared.

Lana Tomba LOL, there were a lot of ways a woman could become collared .. so many in fact the whole idea that there would only be 10% slaves seems unrealistic. That number is often cited by those who RP Gorean free women in SL and IRC for some reason. Far more than 10% of the women in the books were slaves, the proportion was just a statistic provided by the author, it has nothing to do with the status of the women described in the pages ... Nearly all of whom became collared at one point or other. The 90% who were free just were nebulous extras ~ they supposedly existed but you didn't "meet" them.

exactly...when i started seeing a huge influx of free women who were partnering Masters and bringing in their furniture AND their own slaves i wondered what loop hole where??..did they find an RP loop hole to exist in the gorean lifestyle... walking around with their veils..acting like they owned everything. Alot of these "free women" tote themselves as teachers as well. So..in my mind..these gals saw a financial advantage to calling themselves "free" and they took it. I don't mind a guy thinking i'm a stupid..it comes with the territory..but when another female tries taking advantage i take that personal ~Lana Tomba

Of course the fact that most won't express such sentiments in front of the Free Women .. says something. LOL.

A discussion that allows the mind to grow whenever thought stimulate more thought. I may at the end of reading these novels say these people are flat insane. I may decied they ahve all misunderstood the words of JN. I may also turn into a purple monkey and start flying up exposed anusi. But if I learn how to do that, I have learned something from this discussion. The wonderful thing about this planet is the diversity. Earth that is, we dont live on Gor. "Spadesrun, What you say is true in that women Do have a somewhat restricted Role in Gorean society, But merely angering a Man has Never been Grounds to Collar. It has Frequently been the Cause of a Male Arranging circumstamces Under" I must admit the first sentence brought to my mind, RL earth women, arent much different. They naturally have a more restrictive role. How many time you see a woman attack a man? Why don't women walk down the street naked? For christs sake, why do they wear pumps and stilettos? God those hurt. Yes I have worn them, no don't ask why. ( I did once win a female beauty contest, though it was in jest.) Uhm anyway, back to the subject. What was it again? All this rambling is makign me hungry. Hey theres my slipper, I was lookign for that this ....Ohh your all still here .... So, no a man doesn't just take a woman when he feels like. There are customs and rules to observe. Just as in RL for every one. We must accept certain things are taboo. A voodoo man doesnt just walked around turning recently deceased into zombies. And as you say, women know how to behave. Oh yeah, so do men.. I wish you all wel, Trout Ill be back working soon Get more men into GOR and I may just start those divorces lol, Anyway, for now that is all. I wish you al well Spadesrun
