It's irrelevant here.

It's relevant on my first life profile tab in-world because I occasionally meet people with whom I'd like to share that information. These forums not being for general discussion  I fail to see what my location has to do with important on-topic issues like scripting, sculptie prims, and Brenda's panties.

:p

A location is always a useful thing...Sherlock would disagree with you. It says potentially many things...

I don't meet to be heated...I apologize. It's just for someone as 'informed' as Colette is...making a completely inaccurate, blanket statement like that is something I needed to respond to.

doing the little quote thing with "informed" when you dont like my characterization of Myspace is condecending.

Dont like it, fine. No one says you have to agree with me. But if you want to start playing games pointing out my supposed ignornace, you are just being an ass.

I don't hide my location Michael. In fact I've just told you where you can find mine. Location is quite simply irrelevant within the scope of these forums because they are allegedly are not for general chat, so I choose not to wear that particular badge _here_.

Oh give me a freakin' break Colette...are you seriously going to tell me you're never condescending? Sheesh.

I use to have my location on my forum bio. It's Los Angeles. I do have it on my av's profile. It's the only piece of information I really give out. Not a security issue, it's just I don't really come here to talk about my RL. Once I get to know someone, however, that resistance seems to fade.

Only reason I changed it here in the forums is because I noticed so many others had funny listings. I guess it was peer pressure for me. I'll change it back now and again.

Completely understood. However, you can make an assessment and better choose a word choice if you know someone’s colloquialisms or if you are familiar with a region...

So if everyone else jumped off a bridge would you do it too? :p Just kidding, my mother always used to ask me that when I wanted stuff like the cool comb with my name on it to stick in my back pocket like all the other kids had.

*sigh* You guys...

Okay, how about if your location - like mine - has changed five times this year alone?

Sigh, if only Freud were alive, he could tell us why I decline to use voice. Oh, but we don't need Freud, we have Michael!

Just like to add that my location is sometimes different from that of my panties, which seem to get around quite a bit more than I do.

SL wise for me, someone's location is fairly irrelevant in the end. If i know it fine, but like all personal info, how much or how little i have is of no consequence.

Whatever I am or not.

I am not personally attacking you by voicing my opinion of Myspace. However you chose to not simply disagree but call into question how ignorant I supposedly am. And further you made an example out of me by name when responding to someone else.

I think you could stand to take criticisms of technology a little bit less personally.

Becuase its been your pattern.

Someone puts down Voice(in your veiw), you attack the person.

Someone puts down Second Life(in your view), you attack the person.

Someone puts down My Space(in your view), you attack the person.

You don't need schooling for that Chas...you simply change it. Takes less than a minute. :) To some, that may be the work of genius...to others...common sense.

Sorry. You're right. But I think it's very safe to say...you also personally attack when people disagree with you. It's why we butt heads...that's not a secret.

something like 'usa' or 'france' isnt all that useful for a stalker though. it really doesnt help anyone pinpoint your location.
but it does assist people when theyre reading your posts because they can extrapolate from your location. it adds a level of context to things you say or suggest.

A little bit here - a little bit there - another bit over there...join the dots.
I don't like giving online strangers dots to join. Better to give nothing out in public except 'need to know'.

Stalking by strangers aside, I'm for anonymity and no-voice for reasons.
I prefer to meet people online and deal with their minds.
I know with the best will in the world that I would still unwittingly allow my preconceptions about nationalities to colour my perception of what they are saying. Another way of describing preconception might be "a level of context" ;)

Nobody get all uptight now, but I know from RL experience that certain accents make me wince.

I've been through numerous corporate training courses on brainstorming techniques. The best ones work to separate the idea from the person, or more precisely - from the other participants' preconception/prejudice of the person raising the idea.
Remove prejudice and preconceptions as far as possible. There's then not much left to work on except for the pure thought process.
The virtual world can enable that technique. I prefer to separate real and virtual for the most part.

I don't give out detailed info in RL if I can help it... let alone in SL. As a general rule I dislike the thought of a passer-by being able to simply right click me and read all about me.

If someone here in my RL city asks where I live I normally reply with 'west side'. Most people around here get a good enough visual without me being specific to my neighborhood. Still.... my local county does has a website that will show you my RL home address, how much I paid for my home and even shows a picture of my home if you know my RL name.... and that pisses me off to no end! I'm a firm believer that NO ONE has a right to my information unless I provide it.

My forum location is clearly not legit, and it does not match my in-world profile location which simply states 'US-EST' yet it has nothing to do with why I do, or do not, use voice. I don't use voice because I'm typically on from 10pm to 1am my time and I chose not to be rude to others in my house by staying up late talking aloud to my virtual friends.

i add my location simply because i find it very annoying that americans assume everyone else is an american as well. when discussing things people seem to take it for granted that youre in the usa and this and that is illegal and so on, then you gotta explain 'im not a yank, blah blah'.
it gets tedious.

Ironically, I seem to rarely meet Americans. At least most seem to say they are not Americans.

I will guarantee you the number of personal attacks in my posts divided by my post count Is FAR less than yours.

It would be a fractional value.

Bias and skewed. Let's agree to disagree, and move on. No hard feelings.

LOL! When I was searching for a Countdown shot to modify (with the Agenda text), I accidentally came across this:

:D I think that's completely unmanipulated too.

Agree. It's surprising how irrelevant it is really. Platforms like Paltalk, MySpace, Facebook, etc. are very much focused on your real life, but in an environment where people are leading completely separate 'virtual' lives (occupationally, socially, etc.) that's not the case at all.

I have problems from time to time with people taking me a bit too literally (people from Manchester are very sarcastic apparently  ), but I think people quickly work out regional quirks like that as they get to know you. :)

Sorry Micheal.... I disagree very often with Collette... but I never felt attacked by her.

On the other hand... I have only to look back to previous threads you were active in.

Outrageous but true. I think that's why I have little patience with those upset about the age verification issue (I'm NOT trying to derail this thread). Here in the US virtually everything about anyone is available publicly. There is no real privacy. Maybe that's not true in other places, but you may also be surprised to find it is.

As for why don't I use voice? Simply...I just don't. I don't like talking on the phone that much. If a nearby friend starts to get chatty I ask them to come over or just end the conversation. I would use it more if I saw a reason to, but since most people (at least in my circles) don't use it at all, then I see no need whatsoever and hope it stays that way.

Stalkers are good at what they do...it's sad but true. If they want to find us they can. Your example above is no different than Google Earth. If I know your name (I can search for an address via Google), I can put this in Google Earth, and get a satellite image of your house.

At the moment I cant remember if I have a location in my bio and Im not in world to check *scrunches up face to think* Now, if people ask, I always just say I am in the States and let them ask again from there if they want more details. Im not afraid of a stalker, as some in game have actually told me, honestly....I will just sick my 2 horse like dogs on them and 4 kids..THAT ought to scare off anyone

I started admitting to the state I'm from, and or just mentioning the time zone as I pretend that is what they are asking, what time zone I'm in and therefore what time we are both in (SL says it is 11:22 am, but it is really xxxx for me, and xxxx for them and therefore I'm about to fall asleep and they just woke up).
