Hello...sorry I'm on a thread-starting bonanza I know.

I was just wondering why so many of you choose not to include your location in your bio--below a person's avatar picture it gives that info out...

Briefly, in a five page essay, explain the implications each choice presents. Ok, perhaps just a paragraph...why do you choose to, or not to give that information out?

Also, I would seriously, evenhandedly be curious whether those that chose not to add that information, are the same that don't use voice. This is totally impartial science.

Thanks for the time.

I do include both my location and my age on the First Life tab of the profile. Chris is basically me. So it gives others a reference point as to who I am. Even with the mass media, the different sections of the United States, not to mention the world, are very different and generally produce people with different viewpoints and experiences.

Yes and another question would be: are the same people that add location here, the same that add it in their SL profile?

Another question would be how often do you change your location. And when you do change it in RL how long does it take before you update the info on your forum profile.

Actually I've thought of another question on top.... does the location in your inworld profile match the location in your forum profile. And if not, why not?

i add my location simply because i find it very annoying that americans assume everyone else is an american as well. when discussing things people seem to take it for granted that youre in the usa and this and that is illegal and so on, then you gotta explain 'im not a yank, blah blah'.
it gets tedious.

I don't post location either in Sl or here. A few people know where I'm from, how old I am, etc. I don't really have a good reason. Come to think of it, I have no good reason for most of what I do in life. I guess it's an issue of privacy for me, although I guess I really don't care if people know where I am. If someone asked, I would tell them. I just don't volunteer that information.

I don't use voice either, for a variety of reasons.

I prefer to keep RL and SL separate - so, no location.

EDIT - Forgot to mention, I am perfectly happy to use voice, and have, but almost no-one I run into does.

Hmm.. I had to actually look and see if I have my location here. Which I don't. Only because I *think* ( i could be wrong) it was Nina who gave me the idea for my current location listed on here :)

I think for me it depends. I have a yahoo 360 blog. I have that on my web tab of my inworld profile. As well as a R/L pic. Not sure I have location on there, but anyone really looking can see it from my groups that I'm in Philadelphia. Or they can click on my web link. Which has my age (I'm 32) and my location. As for here, I never really thought other than something humorous to me to put there.

And yes, I have used voice. I don't often, only because I don't encounter that many people up on my building platform 500m in the sky. I'm not opposed to it. I am opposed to someone tryin to guilt me into using it. (but that's another thread long ago buried I hope)

Now that I think about it... it's kinda not smart to have all that real info there... someone remind me to remove one of those 3 things from my inworld prof please.

I used to have a Myspace site but then realized that my life isn't THAT much of an open book that I care to share it with every Tom, Dick and Harry that happen along.

I'm American but I don't put that in my profile because for some reason my customers expect me to be in some exotic locale, like India or Saudi Arabia, and are non-plussed when they learn that I'm just your average Jane.

Oryx...you can make your Myspace private...so only friends can add you. Ding ding ding...thank you for playing.

:)

Seriously though...I personally don't care who finds me, ties me up, and steals my skin for his winter coat...some people, on the other hand, care.

I'm an actor and designer, most of my work is picked up from the internet...I AM my own business card...of course, I would never put my street address in a book or public display.

But always remember--the paranoid among you-if someone wants to find you...it can always be arranged.

Well I prefer not to put it there because there are way too many freaks on the internet.:) The less that people know about me, the better...

Speaking as someone who has been stalked from the Net into RL, I never volunteer personal information to a completely unknowable audience.
A few people in SL know my RL, or bits of it.
I know little or much of the RLs of friends. RL is incidental to what we do in SL. The bits that are revealed are revealed as the need or the mood arises.

Even without that factor, why would anyone, *particularly* strangers, want to know this information?

Nosey?
Insecure?

Their problem, not mine.
I refuse to allow anybody to make their problem into my problem.

Don't take me personally--I was only having fun. The way you worded it, however, made it seem like MS didn't have that option.

My Space is for kids.

Or for people who think they are still with it.

People who havent realized the younger generation is still going to think they are lame.

A non-Voice Player here. I generally keep my SL life entirely seperate from my RL life. Ceera is a fictional character that I use for my recreation, and as a business entity in SL. She isn't my Player.

In my forum profile, the "Location" lists the sim Ceera spends the most time in, within SL. I don't indicate my RL location there.

In my in-world profile, my 1st life tab says essentially "The details of my Real Life are private, other than that I am happily married, probably older than you are, and have absolutely no interest in dating anyone in RL that I meet on-line."

In none of my profiles does it list so much as what time zone I am in.

If someone needs to coordinate activities with me time-wise, and they ask, I will tell them what time zone I am in. No one gets much more than that unless they have a legal, contractural reason to know more. For example, if someone is planning on spending a thousand dollars or more to contract my sim-building services, and if they want to know, then yes, of course they can have my RL contact info, and I'll even talk to them on the phone, if they insist. But that information is on a strictly need-to-know basis.

something like 'usa' or 'france' isnt all that useful for a stalker though. it really doesnt help anyone pinpoint your location.
but it does assist people when theyre reading your posts because they can extrapolate from your location. it adds a level of context to things you say or suggest.

I put my location in my RL box, since many peole, not just us Yanks, seem to ask off the bat. I put my occupation in as well. I'm a habitual profile reader, I read EVERYONE"S profile. I like to paly a game, i don't read the 1st Life tab for a while, and I try to figure out where the person is from, with fairly good results.

That is absolutely ridiculous Colette--Myspace is not just for kids. Do you want to tell all the independent film companies, actors, and musicians I know you said that? Do you know how much traffic and attention comes from MS film and music? Obviously you don't, or you wouldn't have labeled it the way you did.

Also MS makes a great portfolio, resume, and bio.

You couldn't be more wrong. I think you're thinking of Facebook...totally different. That's for kids. Kids in college.

I'm not upset...don't mean to come off this way. It's just, for someone as intelligent as you (yes, you are), I would have expected differently.

My location information is about my SL self, most correctly listed as Home Sweet Home, Hundertwasser, Islandia, Sansara, Linden. My RL location is, to me, irrelevant, though I'm not altogether shy about it.
