now that i think of it, in almost every MMO I've played the population has been dominated by males. which makes it fairly easy to spot who is out of place.

Let me guess - every MMO you've played (other than SL) was also based to a large degree on killing things?

It is something you will never know in reality so I don't think it really matters. Lovers or friends means that it still a positive alliance between two people - male or female. Go with the relationship in sl and enjoy it for all it is worth. Age, I think, is equally uncertain BUT I have had great fun with a MUCH older man in sl. Maybe women are better at accepting that a partner might be a woman than a sadly repressed male who feels suddenly aware that "someone" may not be who she says she is - but, as I said before, does it really matter?

Yeah...it matters.

Checked out the gender genie. A selection from an old PM I wrote here came back as female, though not by a huge margin. I cut something from a paper I recently wrote though and got this:

Female Score: 47
Male Score: 204

The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

:p I guess I write like a bad ass. (Which has nothing to do with my sex or my gender :D )

I have had that happen when I was visiting some folks and took some time to play guitar. I was really rocking away and when I was done, a guy who walked into the room said "wow, I thought that was a man playing!" Sigh. Of course that was the same year Rolling Stone had the headling "Can a girl play rock and roll?" Well, I guess that has been answered in the decades since..they most decidedly can!

I guess if cared and wanted to test for gender, I would just start talking about how awful my last period was and then wait to see how they respond.

That is one thing no man is ever going to get!

Yeah...it matters.

In a friendship scenario, yeah trust is a good thing to have. However, I think it only hurts you to be so worried about it when it's gender. One tiny misread comment and you're on full alert, just waiting for the proof you need.. proof that might not even exist. Then you change how you respond to this person, evidence questions get asked, feelings get hurt, and the friendship goes sour. Pissed away a good thing, over what?

People come up with all kinds of excuses for asking about RL gender, but one of the universal truths in SL is that if they ask at all, they want sex or intimacy, and don't want to take the time to get to know you to figure it out for themselves. Sure there's the rare odd exception, but it's really quite predictable.

Now, this I have to disagree with. Of the women I have known who try to pull off being guy, they cannot quite get the confidence and arrogance that a man has.
It isn't the confidence and arrogance - many woman have that. It is the 'cocky' that so many of you add to it. Most women would have a harder time pulling that off.

I also do not know my ring size, haven't worn pantyhose in a very long time, and now consider my monthly cycle a curse therefore have no desire to remember when it started. I like shopping for clothes in SL but hate it in RL and therefore do not follow fashion at all. I'm also very logical minded and have been described as thinking too much like a man sometimes. I could probably hold my own in a conversation on skin care, but not necessarily regarding hair products and definitely know nothing about handbags.

Maybe I'm really a guy and just don't know it yet - scary thought.

I have a few questions i slip into Conversations that tell me for sure, But with Some people, you Just Know.

Long ago in the days of TSO there was a Poster Famous for his extremely long and vigerous, if utterly uninformed Posts on Various forums. I Argued at length with this person, and in Very short order, i realized "No way is this a man" This person simply did Not sound like a man, I can't describe it more closely than that, but i Knew, this was a Woman, and probably Passing out of Middle age.

I was right, someone "Outed' this person's personal Information (A Cheap shot, and one i Strongly disagreed with no matter how annoying this person was) and behold, I was right on BOTH Counts. A Woman Passing out of Middle Age.

It was never any One thing she said, there wasn't really a comment, or series of comments, There wasn't even a general outlook on a specific issue. No, it was the Whole that told me who, and what this person was.

I Come from the West Indies, and my Auntie always said i Had "The sight" But i don't put it down to that at all. No it was Entirely what this lady was saying, and how. Anyone paying attention could have seen it.

Angel.

...which is why I use a child AV...

Considering that, and that most of what I say sounds like it's been ripped from a Stephen King novel (I've been told that a number of times in school as well(^_^)) people have already started describing me as an 'it' or 'thing'. Asking me for any RL information will only help thicken my shell. I'll open up a little... But cross a line and the demon goddess comes out to play.

And it's easy for me to figure out who people are.... If anyone offers me anything remotely romantic, they're a creep and a perv. To understand what I mean... Go online and see for yourself. (^_^)y Beyond that, I don't care... until you behave like a 14yo boy... then I'm just going to have to cut you up and bury the remains in my backyard.(^_^)

And, yes, I know I smiley too much! Thankyouverymuch. (^_^)y

Doesn't matter to me either way the gender of someone, only how they are towards me. I'd fail probably all the questions about female things, I never wear make up & love sport, but i'm still female! I did score 404 on being female & 250 on male tho lol

I've known people for years online & just assume they are what they appear, they could be a bright pink hermaphrodite (sp?) cow for all I care as long as we get on. Would I be upset if one of these people suddenly said they were the opposite sex? Suprised ya, upset nope, why should I be I love em

so you want a good way to detect men from women.... start bitching about your yeast infection... works great for me IRL, I can imagine the same sound of crickets in SL, was a running joke between me and my friends IRL... want privacy.. poof, you got it =)

As it turns out, people's intellectual and social attributes are not automatically, perfectly determined by their biological sex. Which makes me happy.

Many people like virtual worlds a great deal just because it gives them a chance to escape the social pressures that come with whether they adhere or not to certain gender roles.

If you try to guess biological sex based upon adherence to stereotypical gender roles to determine who is genuine or not, you'll just fall into the trap of assuming that those who fall into line with gender stereotypes are genuine or honest, while those who resist gender stereotypes are somehow not genuine or dishonest.

Of course, it's up to you to decide with whom you associate, and with whom you do not. If you want your men to 'act like men,' or your women to 'act like women,' that's your personal choice.

Personally, I'm just fine accepting whatever combination of avatar appearance and personality that a person wants to present.

Have you tried looking at them? In first life that usually gives you a clue so I would guess the same thing applies in SL.

how funny i did the gender genie twice and the answer was different for both

first one was about 350 words scored 254 female and 230 male...it said i must be a female which is true

then i took the rest of a story i am working on which was over the 500 words it suggested and it scored me: Female Score: 1714 Male Score: 1819

so the last part of my story must be written by a male

to tooooo funny...im a female in rl and sl and i do hate having to "prove" it to people

those close to me and that ive talked to on the phone laugh when people suggest maybe im faking it

yup killed them and took their stuff to. yes i know it is silly and ridiculous but so are a lot of things in life. i played the online ones instead of single player games because i like team work and interacting with people instead of computer controlled toons. MMO's are not the much different, there are player made items, including instruments and clothing, and houses to own and decorate. no wear near as advanced as 2nd life's crafting system or housing system.

the latest one i've played is lord of the rings online. yes we killed a lot of stuff but imagine playing through the sorry line of the books with thousands of other people working toward defeating Saron. Some times it is nice to feel like a hero and helping to defeat evil even when it is only pretend. the games are different but not by that much. i just find my self growing broad with that type of game and decided to see what this is one is about. granted the activities are different the but interaction is pretty similar. some times you meet cool people so you group with them and help each other do things, or if they are jerks brush them off, unless it is a PvP server then you just do evil things. don't really like PvP much myself.

I really don't care what gender the person behind the AV is, I simply accept whatever they choose to put in front of me. There have a been a few who I've thought might not be what they appear, but that is their choice and makes no difference to me.

Interestingly the one person who did tell me that there was a he behind her very attractive AV (something I hadn't suspected), I found I still reacted to the AV rather than the person behind the keyboard. In RL I find it much easier to be open with women than men, and in his/her case found that I could talk in the way I would to a woman in RL, but being aware that
s/he also had a male perspective on things. Led to some very interesting and enlightening conversations.

SNIP

I just tried it, once with some general blog-type blather I made up on the spot, about 150 words, and it scored me as male with a ratio of about 3:2. A section of a short story came up as: Female Score: 943, Male Score: 723.

I don't really worry about the gender of the body behind the av, as long as I get on with the person. Occasionally I've met female avs whose actions and speech suggest they aren't what they seem, but I've never felt the need to call anyone out on it. I'm still surprised when I meet people who don't realise that men present with female avs in SL.
