there are questions a female can ask a questionable female to test.
things such as ring size, shoe size, age of first menstruation are the sorts of things that a male can pause at. get into a conversation about hair product or skin care or whatnot. a male will uncover himself usually (unless maybe hes gay).

This was what pissed me off with the women ex-friend of mine. One of the questions was "what was the last pair of pantyhose you bought and the size?"

Geez, I'm female but I like NEVER wear them! I had to freaking struggle for the answer and because of that, I was about to fail that damn test? I mean, come on! Ridiculous. And I have NO idea what ring size I am, got my period really late, blah, blah, blah. I just don't think you can go by these things at all. Let alone, many women are just not typical "women", there are too many fluctuations in what our likes, dislikes are, what we pay attention to, etc. I mean, I'm quite feminine, adore expensive handbages, but I hate shoes for instance. I couldn't tell you a damn thing about shoes but can rattle of bag manufacturer's in an instant! So, if I got asked the wrong question, I "fail" being female?

And what if I were a gay male? A transexual? A drag queen? I bet some of them know a hell of a lot more than I do about many things about clothing!

Ugh! Too complicated!

You can never *REALLY* know. I even had a girlfriend in 1st life whose gender I found myself questioning. Even after sleeping with her!. :(

I think that it matters if someone that you might build a deep frindship with and possibly share things with that might touch on some RL things is being honest with you on, what I think is an important thing. I don't knwo about anyone else but there are some things I would be upset about sharing if I thought that the person i was sharing it with was not what I thought they were.

I heard that more often than not a woman in SL is really a man in RL tyring to make friends with women. Personally, I don't know why unless there is a romantic component. Maybe guys would like the idea of being with a woman "as" a woman. It might be kinda cool to be with a wonam "as" a man. But I would not get all deep and close with some one with that misconception.

SL is mostly fantasy but we all know there is a real person behind the av's would you be happy to feel manipulated by a real person. What if the guise was about a person amusing themselves. Kinda like when you used to be able to make prank calls. So I think alot of the times it does matter.

100% entertainment value with 50% accuracy? :p

A paper would be stating and defending or proving an opinion/conclusion/something which would require "direct" words that are stereotypically male. Female speech is stereotypically insecure and indirect which would probably make for a pretty bad paper, so it's actually paying you a compliment :p.

I think they look at the rate of pronouns used vs the rate of noun specifiers.

(I'm quoting you, but the answer isn't really directed at you, if that makes sense :))

Male and female have a partially overlapping vocal range. *Everyone* can learn to sound like the opposite sex and you'd never know the difference, all it takes is practice.

Pictures or even a webcam won't give you a definite answer either, it could either be a friend/sister/someone or they could just pass for looking like the opposite sex.

A scan of their birth certificate won't tell you for certain either since transgendered individuals can have those changed to reflect their expressed gender.

Nothing short of a DNA test is ever going to give you a satisfactory answer and that might be just a little bit too much to ask of someone just to settle someone else's paranoia.

The question really isn't "how can I tell?", but rather "why do I care so much?"

---

More cynical:

I've had close friends who turned out to be a different gender, but I've also had close friends who suddenly turned out to be happily married ("it doesn't change anything, does it?";), who don't look anything like the pictures they sent I never even asked for ("I thought you'd like me better if you thought I looked like that";), or who turn out to be half of twice the age they said were.

Ironically most of those pulled a "prove yourself" stunt on me, so I'm really wondering if the people who are distrusting in the first place aren't that way because of their own guilty conscience. After all, if you’re lying to them, why wouldn't they be lying to you?

I care becasue I am just one of those people that don't want to be on the receiving end of someone's "can I pass for female" experiment. Not becasue I have a thing against talking to men. I just think it is manipulative to tell someone that you are a woman and talk about your shared woman experiences and such. Some situations I dont really care.

I'm not worried at all :-) I find it quite amusing in fact. One of my friends keeps telling me he's certain I'm a gay man in a womens body lol, so maybe it does make sense :D Gender studies have always been of interest to me. But 100% entertaining is for certain!

My two cents' worth, though I've never understood why this matters:

1) Bra size. Most men (not all, by far, but the majority that I've polled) aren't familiar with the sizing system. I don't know about other places but for the US, it's a number followed by a letter--the number is the distance around the chest (under the breasts) and the letter indicates cup size. Realistically, a woman with a 36DD bra is quite unlikely to have a 19-inch waist.

2.) Gender pronouns. These are generally with us from birth onward, and we get used to writing one set or the other habitually. When emoting, as in SL RP or other interactions (which means a bit of speaking in the third person, generally), it can get very hard for a person to remember which pronoun to use if it's not their default. (I've RPed male characters in other settings before and the pronouns were the hardest bits by far to be mindful of... though those were RPs with no intimate interactions involved.)

Now for some exceptions to disprove the above: I've known males with a better grasp of bra sizes, shoe sizes, and even pantyhose sizes than I have. I've also known people whose biological gender did not match their gender sense, in which case they -are- ...imho, at least, the gender they feel that they are, period. Again, I've never understood why it mattered, but that's my take on the subject.

Alsoalso... the gender genie put me at 490 female, 482 male. Can't I just be an androgynous tomboy who likes shoes? ^^

Isn't it possible that some RL's - both male or female, see their avatars as a virtual girlfriend or boyfriend - that's their romance interest. They might not be looking for further romantic relationships in SL.

::eyeroll:: who cares? I mean what's wrong with just asking?

Aside:
I love the gender genie page, funny to test people I know and I've see it elswhere, but not with a link to the paper or the words being used. I like this one better because it shows all the comparative words used, which are all very telling. Words making assignments will be judged to be male, and words personalizing an element will be judged female. if you write technically or professionally you'll almost always get male (unless you happen to be in psychiatry/case management). and if you're in a busines evnvironment you can pretty much forget comning up female. I think it's a better test of your environment than if you're male or female, but what do I know. Still fun though.

Well I think that the 'most men are women' is largely untrue.

However there are many people simply in here to mess with other people, so that's not an unfair thought.

Again, for me, if I really CARE about the gender of the person that will come out over time. I'm extremely aware of the identity of the one I really care for and that was never in doubt anyway.

Maybe it's more the question "why do I care what gender people think *I* am" too. I generally don't, other than if someone is getting into a bit of a lively debate with me, throwing out that they believe I am a man (always said in public) is the only weapon they have to hit me with. How I enjoy disarming them with a quick comment on voice :)

I found it funny. I deliberately wrote about the apartment/hotel where I stayed last night which was filled to the brim with leather, steel, chrome ... still came out female in the end LOL.

hi
I'm new here but have been playing MMO's for years. most of the time you can tell men from women by the stuff they talk about and the way they say things. of course this is not fool proof. since i am new and just starting to learn the player customs and culture; what is a good indicator in adventure games may not be here.

on a side note i assume every one is either a middle aged bald fat man drinking beer in his underwear or a teen-age dope smoking slacker until proven other wise.

now that i think of it, in almost every MMO I've played the population has been dominated by males. which makes it fairly easy to spot who is out of place.

so far I've been in game for 5 days and have had 4 people respond to me, i believe 3 of them are women. based on the nature of the conversation.

I can see how all the ignoring going on could cause newbies to go a griefing spree then delete the game. took three days of talking to every one around me for someone to respond.

disclaimer:
what ever your thinking, will be thinking or if you can`t think boil some water, ain`t my problem :)

befor some wild accusations will be thrown around at "us"

had a male avi for 3 days and only 2! ppl spoke to me as a nubster of wich 1 is my best friend today
on the 3rd day my avi got corrupted and as it was free, i just created another 1 and taking the 3 day expirience with me from ahern, created an female avi and never botherd getting a male alt due to the below

this is not an insult so if you see it like that, it wasn`t the intention!

having been using a female avi for 10 months i can say from expirience why *atleast* part of the males use female avi`s:

beats looking at an ugly fart all day long and instead see something more pleasant :)

people are STUPID!
most i have met are soooo open for female avi`s while male avi`s have to "prove" them selfs every time (observed from what i`ve seen with/from friends)
using an female avi got me pritty much every where and very simple to interact with, just saying "hi" with a good looking avi is enough no matter what

no intention on getting a relationship
no role playing
no screwing around/misleading
just being your self

people say so much bs, mislead eachother yada yada yada but even if they are unsure of it with some avi`s, they never simply ask

having nothing to hide or mislead anyone, i can clearify of why some use a female avi`s instead of male, simply put, it makes life ALOT easier
know some others who use it for the same reason, either as main or an alt

never tried to hide the fact so bite me if you can`t handle my truth ;)

It is something you will never know in reality so I don't think it really matters. Lovers or friends means that it still a positive alliance between two people - male or female. Go with the relationship in sl and enjoy it for all it is worth. Age, I think, is equally uncertain BUT I have had great fun with a MUCH older man in sl. Maybe women are better at accepting that a partner might be a woman than a sadly repressed male who feels suddenly aware that "someone" may not be who she says she is - but, as I said before, does it really matter?
