I have hair like that too, a couple of them. And, the hairsticks that hold the hair in the updo, are removeable by 'either' the owner only OR 'anyone'. 2 different sets of sticks. If I don't want anyone bringing down my hair, I'd wear the 'owner only' sticks.......as a romantic thing, I suppose it could be nice to have your lover remove the sticks, and the hair comes tumbling down, but for everyday, it's 'owner only'. Should have guessed, I supposed. I'm pretty sure the last words spoken by a human being on this planet will be, "I wonder what that button does". |

In my case, since I'm still relatively new to SL is that I'll cam around at a gathering and look at others avatars. Typically thinking to myself "wow! That looks good! I wonder how that effect was done?" Sometimes, I'll take some snapshots to show my non-SL friends. Think of it as potential recruitment or as a way to show my non SL playing friends just why I play SL. Everything from Fishing to building.

I never cam into a structure, nor wil I cam when in a place whee intimacy may be a possibility. In obviously public areas, I cam to look at a variety of things, including avatars. I consider our cartoon selves our artistic creations and I like to see what others have done, in both their physical appearance and clothing choices. If that's too much for someone to handle, well then spank me.

... If you're alone, and see two sets of 3d crosshairs near you, or especially ON you, you're being watched. The 3d crosshairs represent camera focus and they're ALWAYS there--whether you actually see them or not ... I was wondering if I focus my camera on something completely arbitrary like a lamp post or a car, for instance, then orbit/pan/rotate my view to get up close and personal on another av at the far end of the street, will my crosshairs stay on the lamp post or will they start crawling over that av's kilt or skirt or whatever? I only ask because I'm often in situations where this is expected behaviour but I haven't seen the 'Show Look At' crosshairs go anywhere in particular on the few occasions I experimented with them. Of course it's perfectly possible that no one was interested in me but I'd hate to think I was cruising a bunch of bots. |

The crosshairs won't follow where you alt-zoom, they stay wherever you focused. The same will happen if you just cam around without focusing on anything, the crosshairs will just point a little ahead of you. So, you are free to do all the clandestine upskirt perving you like ![]() (Also it seems a lot of people never do catch on with the cam controls, you'll see a lot of people who just point their avatars where they want to see, or use mouselook.) |

The crosshairs won't follow where you alt-zoom ... Thank heavens! I can perv in peace as I suspected. Also it seems a lot of people never do catch on with the cam controls, you'll see a lot of people who just point their avatars where they want to see, or use mouselook. I figured this would be the case - especially for folk like myself who have little or no gaming experience. I was surprised to see a friend's kid pick up on the keyboard controls the moment he logged into the Teen Grid for the first time. It was second nature to him because he has a shelf full of games for his PC. All the same, it's a shame features like this aren't thoroughly promoted to new residents. I'm sure many people log in for very different reasons to the average gamer and if anything might have put me off SL during the first few days, it would have been the clunky GUI controls. I was fortunate enough to meet someone who explained the shortcuts in my first week and sensible enough to persevere with their advice. The system clicked fairly quickly. |

Yeah..I'd been demonstrating the "anyone to remove" hairsticks to my friend, she'd said, "I saw a dress the other day that would go really well with that ... I'll TP you," and I didn't bother to replace the "anyone to remove" with "owner only" before following her, not realising that perfect strangers might decide to click on my hair to see what happened. Should have guessed, I supposed. I'm pretty sure the last words spoken by a human being on this planet will be, "I wonder what that button does". Careful on the menu permissions for silks, too... Just saying. It was a costume contest. What. Lol. _____________________

Don't set your Xcite parts to be touchable by everyone either. I accidentally poked a girl's nipple once and the nipple announced that I had done so to everyone in chat range.

A lot of time I still look around with my avatar because, well, it just seems natural to act as if I'm actually "in" my avatar. I do a lot of that too because it's good to 'see' the 'toon looking at things, which is why I prefer AO animations that work 'neck-free'. I like to 'look' at another av if I'm talking to him or her because it's downright strange when we stare off into arbitrary space during a conversation. Also it's good for posing: I'm considering a shot of whiskey as I sit at a bar in-world writing this (shame there isn't a soundtrack of Patsy Cline or even Slim Whitman to complete the effect). Still, I'm still glad my neck doesn't do a 'Reed Richards' during my more discreet observational manoeuvres or that I don't have them damn crosshairs blowing my cover. |

Wow! I used to celebrate getting a single reply.
Without commenting on the range of sociological issues my question innocently raised, I do have a couple of technical questions. It seems the more experienced I become in SL, the more I realize I don't know. 1. What is the difference between focusing on something and Alt-Zooming? Alt-zoom (pressing alt and using the mouse to zoom) is all I've ever used to focus on anything. Is there another way to focus? 2. What's the Emerald Viewer? Where do I get one? Can I undo it if I don't like it? Thanks |

It's wonderful, I just got it a week or so ago and my crashing woes have been nearly eliminated, plus so many cool features, as discussed in this thread. If you don't like it (unlikely) just uninstall it. Your forme viewer will stiill be there, you don't have to get rid of the SL viewer in order to get this one. http://modularsystems.sl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3&Itemid=8 |

The Show Look At option that SL provides (Advanced menu > Character > Show Look At) only displays colored crosshairs. The various colors tell you what your focus is, for example whether it is anchored or not.
You see your own crosshairs that depict your point of view and you see crosshairs for all other avatars around you but they are not identified. In other words, if a dozen people are staring at you, you'll see a dozen crosshairs on yourself, but you won't know who is looking (unless it's a small crowd). Also, the SL system does not send any chat messages back to people staring at you. For a Torley video, go to http://secondlife.com/my/whatnext/video-tutorials/?lang=en-US and enter "Show Look" in the search box. The Emerald viewer does add the avatar's name to the crosshairs so you know exactly who is looking where. But it does not (as far as I know) have a "reply to peeper" function. Impresario, I know exactly what you're talking about. I was staring at someone once and got a message that said "Stop staring at me!" As I recall, it was displayed in floating text because I do remember an uncomfortable feeling that the message wouldn't go away until I averted my gaze. I also remember the distinct impression that the comment was automatic. I don't think the "subject" was aware of who was staring and may not have received any feedback at all, since she gave no visible indication, but there was no way to be sure. But the IS something out there that can ascertain when you are being cammed. What it does beyond that, I couldn't say. On a side note, I STRONGLY recommend the Emerald viewer. http://modularsystems.sl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3&Itemid=8 It has a plethora of useful features. With the Area Search, you'll never lose an item again. With the Command Line, teleporting is a whole new game. The Phantom and Ground Sit anywhere features will end forever the griefer's ability to push you around. The Radar puts your current radar to shame. |

One of my bizarrest early experiences in SL was being at a club, where there were a male and female going at each other, in a sort of flirty way, in open chat. Suddenly the male shouted at the woman: "And STOP TOUCHING MY DICK, [name deleted]!!"
I was utterly and completely mystified. And remained that way for several months until ANOTHER experience lent me a retrospective "AHHHHH!" moment of understanding. ![]() _____________________
