I like to let my cam rove around in crowded places to look at how others are dressed, look and behave. On several of these 'avi-watching' exploits I had someone IM me with the words: "I see you're looking at me ", even though my avi was far from them. Am I being toyed with or are there really scripted objects or other means to know if someone has their camera on you? Just curious, and btw. I'm not talking about hovering outside of someone's house as a peeping tom. I'm quite aware of radars that catch that kind of behavior.

There is a function called "show look at" which allows you to see where avatars are looking by displaying a crosshair. It is under the character section of the advanced menu. I believe the Emerald viewer can attach names to the crosshairs.

They are probably using the emerald viewer. From what I understand it can display which avatars are looking at what.

I've recommended that people use that function to be sure that they aren't being stalked or peeped on, but the problem has always been, of course, that there was no way of knowing, in the standard viewer, who was actually camming on you. Can anyone confirm that this is true of the Emerald viewer for me?

There is a setting in the advance debug menu that lets you see what avatars are looking at. I believe it's "Show Look At"

who gives a damn? i mean, in RL people also look around, even unaware they are doing it. Nothing wrong with that. Besides, if one wants to view the profile of someone, the simplest way is rightclick on the av, show profile, while doing this, the cam of the requesting av, is also focussed on the other (thus when the option is on, the other sees the av is looking at them) but it is not stalking related at all. Also sometimes people think they spot a known person somewhere in the distance.. (thus zooming in on the person, so they can see the av name) etc etc etc etc etc etc many legit reasons to focus on an avi...

I'm sorry if it sounded like that was what I was implying. From: Destiny Niles There is a setting in the advance debug menu that lets you see what avatars are looking at. I believe it's "Show Look At" Thanks for both answers. I'll check this out, Destiny: it's useful stuff to know, particularly for women who already know they are being stalked.

Emerald also has a feature to stop broadcasting your camera information. If you turn it on, nobody can see what you are looking at.
However, with it selected when you move your focus to something, your avatar's face/eyes won't look directly at it.

Fortunately, most stalkers are not really "griefers," in the technical sense of having expertise in scripting, knowing their way around the app, and so forth, so they likely won't know this. Most of them are just pathetic little dweebs with little real interest in SL itself, or its mechanics. And they are too busy BEING pathetic little dweebs to take the time to learn.

Can't say as I would care if someone knew i was looking since when i look it's either because something worn caught my eye or i am trying to get stuff to rezz! NOw - if i could get my eyes to look WHERE i want them to when I am shooting a picture of myself - THAT would be awesome! All my eyelash adverts look exactly the same because I have not found a way to focus my eyes elsewhere when I zoom in for the shot.

Well, FYI....just because someone is camming you up and down....does not mean they are a perv or stalker.
They're just "interested."
And Impresario....the "I see you're looking at me" phrase is a great conversation starter, even if they are toying with you....pay attention, and work it.

I see this as a useful function for occasions when a woman (or man, for that matter) already knows, or has good reason to suspect, that she or he is being stalked.

I suppose that if you're not used to being scanned up and down in RL....you might find it awkward in SL. But it's not "stalking."

I just want to make sure you all know that the "not always perving" comments do not apply to me. I am perving on you.

From: Mickey Vandeverre I suppose that if you're not used to being scanned up and down in RL....you might find it awkward in SL. But it's not "stalking." Hmmm, possibly true that some might react that way. I remember being mildly . . . put off? disturbed? . . . when I first read this passage in the official "Creating Your World" SL guide: From: Creating Your World Alt-zooming is one of the most important skills to master in Second Life as it gives you the ability to examine objects around you more closely from all angles, to view locations too small for your avatar to explore, or zoom out and get a bird's-eye view of the terrain, and to look up ladies' skirts (but don't let us catch you doing that!). (p. 7)
I wouldn't want to make a big deal out of an obviously facetious aside, but I was struck by the assumption that the reader was male, and that (given the bizarre popularity of "up skirt" shots in internet porn) engaging in that kind of activity was, well, sort of "ok" so far as the writers were concerned. That said, I couldn't care less if people look up my skirts in SL. I make sure that my glitch pants are always impenetrable wool.

heeh!
Well I dont set that feature (Torley has a video about it - think it's in the advanced menu). It would be too distracting.

The downside to Show Look At is, it also lets you know when people aren't perving on you.

If I'm in the same space as you, be sure that I am going to cam in on you and read your profile at some stage. Doesn't matter if you're male, female or indeterminate -- and regardless of species or proportion of organic.

But on a more serious note, do not take these things the wrong way.
In real life, if you notice someone noticing you, there is a feeling of flattery or at least there is for me. Most of the time we simply ignore it and move on. If you want to encourage things a little father, you smile back, wink or give some form of little communication back that you saw them looking at you. While it may be a little embarrassing to be caught staring, the opening is there for them to take advantage of.
More than likely, they enjoyed the attention you gave them and were letting you know that. It doesn't have to be sexual either.

From: Amaranthim Talon I have not found a way to focus my eyes elsewhere when I zoom in for the shot. alt-click to focus your eyes where you want them to look, then use camera controls to position for the shot. You can ctrl-0 (the depth of field setting thingie?) for ultra-closeup before you use the camera controls. edit: Actually, when took shots of me modeling, I also sometimes brought in a 2nd AV just to take the pic. It was quicker that way. .

True . . . although, in RL, there is a point at which staring shifts from being flirtatious, or flattering, or whatever, to becoming ogling or leering. It's hard to determine the exact point at which that line is crossed, and it must surely differ from person to person, but if one IS caught staring, and no sign is given that it is welcome, or at least permitted, within the first few occasions that eyes meet, then it is time to find something else to look at. Of course, that does NOT apply at all to SL.

From: Scylla Rhiadra although, in RL, .... People will indeed stare more in SL than in RL, if for no other reason than in RL you cannot click on that skirt and figure out where to buy it. Hey, why else do people in SL spend money tricking out their pixels, if not to be looked at?
