From: Quixotic Hermit I hate unsolicited bites as much as the next person. But, I play Bloodlines along with my wife and we use it as a way to make friends. Bloodlines is no more a marketing scheme than the reselling of virtual land is. It's all about perspective. I usually don't bring it up until they ask me about my fangs and then I let them know about it and ask to bite them if they're a fresh victim. I spend more on buying blood than I do biting people. It is a form of RP just like anything else and my wife and I built our home in SL themed around medieval and vampire culture. Non-creative automatons stand around and spam people with offers to bite. People who RP and do it right do so through actual conversation. The challenge and the thrill lies in convincing someone they should be bitten in the first place and even more so convincing them to turn into a vampire! The people airing their displeasure here are not really airing them at people like you who wish to play and not bother people who wish not to be bothered. They are upset at the idiots also playing alongside you in the same system and upset at the bloodlines creators for allowing this situation to occur through greed, thoughtlessness and selfishness. It has to be asked though that if role-play is your thing what does having the HUD really bring as an advantage? I am a very experience role-player and have role-played for a long while in SL (and out too) and have never ever needed a HUD or meter for my role-play. I have often needed a HUD or meter for combat to gauge my stats as rp'ing combat is not to everyone's taste as most want the combat to seem visually like real combat and do not find text-rp combat very satisfying. However the Bloodlines HUD does not seem to really facilitate combat very well either and so it leaves one begging the question what realism does it bring that you cannot get from straight role-play (with perhaps a bite animation too if that is your thing)? The reason Bloodlines is seen as a viral-marketing scheme and possible pyramid scheme is the fact that blood must be continually bought for L$. It is like the creators first priority was to make Bloodlines a competition to get the most blood rather to make a good rp system.

ZOMG I have this thing, see, it's called a television, see, and these PEOPLE, how DARE they, pay money to this broadcasting company so that they can expose me to their product 3 or 4 times an hour. How can this POSSIBLY be ethical? I'm going to report them, I am, to the company that made the television set.
Or I could just mute the commercials and wander off to the kitchen to get a snack.

The people who dislike Bloodlines did not buy a product from the Bloodlines makers nor engage in a service that they realized was likely to produce a Bloodlines type thing as a byproduct that would have to be tolerated alongside the benefits as they have become inseparable. I think like a lot of analogies or parallels that the television one is different enough to not really be comparable.

From: DagnyT Dagger It is NOT a solution. They do not remove you from their database. All they do is hide your name on their website, and allow you to be hidden from their hud. This only works really, if you have never been bitten at all. Once you have been bitten, your bite requests drop to practially nil.
And yes, the creators SHOULD be ARed and punished. Note for their creation per se, but because they purposefully created something that is designed to not only harass people, but to gather the data of these people (without any prior knowledge ) store it, and refuse to delete it upon request. http://kdc.ethernia.net/sys/name2key.phpLets take this example, i collect since months key/name data about users in SL, if you ask me to remove you , i won't, you have no business to tell me what i should do with public data. You might not like the bloodline thing and i don't like it either but in my case, it's because i believe there is more potential to this thing than what they made, and a much cleaner way to do it. Can we blame them for trying to extract a steady stream of revenue from their creation? Can we blame them that peoples get addicted to the game?

sending out these necklaces is like saying would you like to be on our no call list.. that is pretty much like admitting they are spamming. they also say that admitting you have a problem is half the battle to the cure.. i'll keep sending them to the moon and ARing until they find the second half i guess.. when someone would come up to me in the past and at some point would tel me they were a vamp..i would be like..wow so neat..most times they would go into explination of how blood works in families and actual rp blood line(not the FPS bloodlines but the RP blood lines) i could talk to them for hours..but now when someone tells me they are a vamp..the first thing i say is Bloodlines? times now the answer is yes.. you can pretty much spot them out though to the real rp vamps..not many bloodline vamps shop at the good vamp stores lol and most times the real ones don't come up wanting to bite you..i found it's actually hard to get bitten by an rp vamp.. it almost takes an act of congress

We can blame them for putting profit before the amount problems their product would cause. It would not have been hard to tell that if the product became popular then it would be used to grief people who do not wish to participate. They could have avoided that very simply by making the product work only with a freely available victim HUD which would ensure only people wanting to participate would get bite requests. Even after the problems started it was not too late to do this, even now it is not too late. Do they do this? No they don't, they choose to do very little in fact. The system should be opt in like every other SL role-play, not opt out. Can we blame them? We most certainly can.

From: Kyrah Abattoir Can we blame them for trying to extract a steady stream of revenue from their creation? Can we blame them that peoples get addicted to the game? Can we blame the Russian mafia for running spambotnets? What Bloodlines does is diabolically clever. If the Bloodlines owners had generated each of those spam requests, their accounts would have been terminated long ago. Instead, they have clueless minions doing the dirty work for them, deluded that they're playing a game. From: Kyrah Abattoir Well my system is not even opt out , but surprisingly nobody gives a shit. They sure would if suddenly your name2key started popping dialog boxes on everybody's screens, repeatedly, at random times and locations--even if they nominally came from other avatars' attachments.

From: Kyrah Abattoir Well my system is not even opt out , but surprisingly nobody gives a shit. And it isn't THAT hard to TeleportAgentHome the bugger. Maybe your system has less impact or does not produce something that gets in peoples faces. I don't know you or what system you have. I do know that once a system starts to irritate a lot of people it will get noticed. Most places where people are getting bothered by bite requests are not owned by them, malls, shop, gardens etc. So llTeleportAgentHome() is not going to work for them. I think because you do have a system that collects data on people you are not going to be able to look at this very objectively. If *any* game in SL is causing many people to get hassles they would rather not have then they are doing something wrong. Making people opt-out of being hassled is the wrong approach. None of the other high profile systems for other SL roleplaying/combat (such as CCS and DCS) need to do this and there is no reason why Bloodlines should need to either. Maximising profits is not a good reason either imo.

Well, to each their own. Nobody forces a Bloodlines player to buy blood so I still don't see it as a marketing scheme. That's still like saying reselling land in SL is one too. Again, it's all about perspective.
I think Bloodlines is an ingenious idea and is the first RP system that allows players to play outside of a designated sim. Unfortunately, I find that there is a mindset of intolerance in SL by most residents who want to come here and have their perfect little lives. Anything that gets in the way (I had someone hate me once because I wore guns...not used them, simply wore them) of their vision of utopia is seen as something that should be removed from the system. So, we're stuck between the automaton biters and intolerant residents.
Before I joined Bloodlines, I was asked probably dozens of times to be bitten. Sure, it got on my nerves at times...just like unsolicited friend's requests do. But I'm not up in arms against LL and asking them to remove the friendship feature from SL. I simply am not bothered by it. It takes me no time click no or cancel. What is more annoying? Getting asked to be bitten maybe once or twice a day? Or being part of several event groups were idiot club promoters spam the same messages over and over both via event notices and group IM? It's annoying, but I don't complain. Live and let live. Everybody's got their own agenda in SL.
Being part of their database...who cares? Seriously. You should hate the government for making you part of dozens of databases since the day you were born. Not some game that only thrives in SL and a database which records your name and whether or not you've been bitten.

All these points have been thrashed out here and on other threads to do with the subject. The questions you raise have been answered already on both sides if you care to find them. Just like with other Bloodlines players you cannot or are unwilling to see the issues. It is not just one or two people who are getting a few bite requests occasionally, it is becoming a scourge that blights SL for those who encounter it at its worst. Who cares? People care, maybe not you but enough to raise these issues.

Anyone who spams a request to bite me gets back a request to let me stab them through the heart with a wooden stake.

From: LittleMe Jewell I received this notice today from the Free Style group: Bloodlines is offering a free, copy/transfer garlic necklace for anyone who does not want to be offered vampire bites. Just wear the necklace, click on it, and you will be given the option to be deleted from the Bloodlines system forever. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Liquid%20South/224/44/0 (for the purists - the question is in the title). But my avatar likes ALL her other jewelry, so I just hit the decline when offered a vampire bite.

Anyhow that garlic necklace will keep them from sending vampire bite notices forever and then you never have to wear that garlic necklace again nor keep hitting decline on the blue menu forever? If that's true, sounds like a plan!

How about people who don't trust closed scripts to be worn/used from people they don't trust? Don't bother to answer.

I'm not actually requesting that LL close down the Bloodlines game. No, in stead, I'll AR anyone who sends me an unsolicited bite request as SPAM. Just as I AR those for clubs I've never been to or items I never looked for. (This does not include items for groups I've joined.. that's different!)
I want the Bloodlines creators to change their own game, to make it more friendly for the grid and to repair their reputation. I shouldn't have to have my girls on their databases to avoid getting bitten. If I want to be in their databases, I'd volunteer to be in their game. I'm not, so it's pretty apparent that I don't.
Yeah.... I'm not thrilled.

Interesting... Yesterday was the first day I or any of my alts was ever approached by any vampire, outside of a vampire-theme sim, with a request to accept a bite animation. It was in a well-known AO maker's store, where lots of people were popping in to accept a free gift for clients. Nothing to do with vampires, and I bet they were hoping some folks would accept the dialog, expecting it to be a product delivery notice and not an "attack". It was one of my less commonly used alts that they 'tried to bite'. I merely declined the request without comment, and teleported away as soon as I had concluded my business in that store. I recommend that approach for most people.
Out of respect for the store's owners, I didn't respond in character...
That particular alt is a female anthro wolf, who is also able to become a VERY large werewolf. And I admit, I was rather tempted to shift to her werewolf form, say "You're too late. Now it's MY TURN!", and launch the werewolf's "Shred victim" attack.
Tempted, but I refrained...
