That was exactly my point when I posted earlier that the "real powerful" women are out in the "real world," everyday in the trenches whether it is raising a family as a single parent; playing hardball in a profession that has been traditionally dominated by men; or even being the first female secretary of state!

No offense to the ladies mentioned in this thread, but having some talent to play with paint tools in photoshop while sitting at your desk, or spin around naked using an animation, or grabbing textures from the internet, is NOT power.

I find the premise of the article to be offensive, divisive, and NOT a tribute to powerful women whatsoever.

Holy Crap some-one needs a hug.

Theres a Hell of a lot more goes into running a business in SL than painting pretty pictures
(snagging textures off the net? Hope that wasnt refering to me...whilst I accept a lot of my older stuff is net found like all older textures stores used to do, however its not them that ppl come to me for its my own hand work visit people stores b4 passing judgment nd im not aware of any escorts being mentioned?)

Regardless...

Theres a LOT of seriously talented ppl in SL that arent even being seen because they lack marketing skills...financial and business skills...to succeed in SL as in RL when having ur own business you need a combination of a good product, marketing skills, financial managment skills and customer care skills.

Why compare the RL powerful women? Virtual has its limits ! lol People dont die we dont need nurses or doctors or brain surgeons in SL so the 'power' has to be measured by virtual impact.

Building. Business Managment. Artistic Skills. Helping & Teaching. Helping make SL a better experience for others without a selfish motivation...etc.

My Vote is Robin Sojourner

Unfortunalty she isnt here as she couldnt afford her telephone bill for 2 mths so no internet.

She did leave a forum post saying she would be awy for 2 mths and I replied to see if we could have a 'whip round' no one replied.

Sad because a woman of THAT skill who could quite easily make $$$ in SL decided not to and has dedicated her land to a massive multi level texture tutorial complete with freebie scripts and textures..has dedicated her TIME to teaching others in this forum how to do things...she is a giver without wanting anything in return and altho this may not be the right place to ask again...if anyone knows her or can get to her i still am willing to send her some money to get her back in SL shes from the UK like me and seriosuly...

THATS power to have THAT level of knowledge and do nothing with it but teach others????

To the point she cant even afford her own phone bill...because shed rather give than take in SL?

SL is a massive place the only person I think we can all say we know is Anshe.

The rest is sheer coincidence and the circles you mix and shop in.

I think its better to write ”KNOW ABOUT”.. few of us over 200.000 know her.. and what she are planing and thinking about..

*****

Robin Sojourner - I dont know her but I have seen her place in SL (well worth a visit!!) and her webpage.. and they are great.. lots of info to as al and lots of free (good) things..

Powerful women hummm - well to my mind some of the obvious choices are Baccara Rhodes and Fey Brightwillow for Spellbound and the influence that it has had on social event (such as Oz, Peter Pan). Individually, Baccara for her work with Home Depoz which is two sims of housing needs, Fey for her influence on clothing designs and wear being one of the oldest clothing designers.

There's also Anshee Chung, if you like her or not the woman has an influence on the SL market place when it comes to land and it's inflence on the economy.

Talking about land, Madison Gardner creates some of the most innovative and interesting houses - homes that are seen all over SecondLife, and as I'm told one of the most popular homes in SL. I don't think there is a pre-fab home builder that matches her skills and talens.

Munchflower Zaius who, in my opinion, is the real innovator when it comes to dealing with skins, there are also some trends I feel that she started when it comes to dealing with skins. I could say more but I'll be gushing. I feel that Munchflower has not only has set trends with skins but also has become an icon in the Industrial/Goth scene in SecondLife.

Drift Monde who started Textures Unlimited that has a huge selection of textures that just about every builder, content creator uses. Also with clovers Drift Monde created an oasis for live music, holding events there on a consistant basis. I feel she has not only become a power in texturing and providing useable textures for content, but also was one of the starting forces behind the live music scene.

I could go on, but those are my initial list :D

A copy of my email to Catherine:

"Hello,

Her name is Germaine LaFollette and I think she's one of the most powerful women in SL. She runs an extraordinary place called Bingoland Park with an event every morning. She has managed to get people to love Bingo even though Tringo has taken over. She's kept true to her identity by keeping her land and hosting Bingo events ever since I joined Second Life in 2004. I consider her place a retreat in itself, because it is so original and beautiful, with Hawaiian music, and train tracks in the background. She is also very intelligent and amazing herself.

Thanks for letting me speak my mind,
Nimue Galatea"

Could it be that you are confusing her with somebody else? Robin is from the US and posted today in the Design and Texture forum. I talked to her the other day inworld and she didn't seem to have any problems going online.

I hadn't, until this thread. Been building for nearly 3 years in SL and never bought her textures. No idea if I've seen any though, maybe, maybe not...

Thats a shame us both being in England too...if for that reason alone! :)

Anyway lol Nice to meet you :P

From: Palomma Casanova

I am sure there are a few more.... like Sensual Casanova, Ari... from the beginning these ladies gave me the opportunity as a model and start in SL.. they inspired me a lot. I dont talk to them much because we each took our ways but I am always thankful to them. They still work hard and are very helpful to the new resident. They still have time for their designs. Ohh... Lash Xevious... for me, she is powerful, so talented, and yet, she always answers a hello...Jennyfur Peregrine, very friendly lady and succesful in SL...

Anyway, many of you have mentioned ladies I have never heard of, and I have been in SL over two years... if they were so powerful, how come I haven't heard of them? lol

DELETED some other comments... Zip Zip...

Thanks Palomma, you are right, we seem to have gone our seperate ways, but I think I speak for Asri as well when I say that we are always here for our friends, we may not always be able to engage the first IM to get a convo going but we are here when you need us :) *hugs*

Hehe you too... :)

Anyway, my point was basically, what do people mean by power? Influence? Fame? Wealth? I don't think there is any real power in SL for non-Lindens... Even Anshe doesn't affect others much... sure, she influences the exchange rate, but that only affects the people cashing out... and like many have said, half the people named as influencing everyone, or known by everyone, I've never heard of, and probably they've never heard of me either.

True power is invisible anyway. Once you're "known" to be powerful, people tend to conspire to take it away from you... especially in SL.

Wow! I was told by someone in-world to visit this thread. (I usually just stay in Design & Textures. :D )

Thanks, all the people who said kind things about me.

I'm not sure I really deserve all of that, though. I'm just a person, like anyone else, and I'm enjoying what I do. (Sometimes, I think I'm too lucky and spoiled to be believed. I mean, I spend all day doing what I'd do if I didn't have to earn a living, and I am able to earn a living doing it!)

My very favorite thing to do is teach, (and learn from others, which is part of the same thing,) and I get to do it! The thing I like second best is making things, and I get to do that, too.

LillyBeth, I appreciate your kind thoughts and words, but I really do think, like Demain said, that you have me confused with someone else. Or perhaps concatenated. I mean, I do have texture tutorials, but I also have a store, and I do earn money in-world from selling hair and clothing and stuff, even though the tutorials and things are all free. And, ummm, I've never had to go without phone service.

I was out of the world for a while last fall, but it's because I had surgery, not because I couldn't afford to come in.

And, ummm... I'm afraid that I live in the US. In Michigan, as a matter of fact, near Detroit. (Not that I wouldn't gladly live in the UK right now, but I don't happen to. :D )

As for the main thrust of this thread, I agree that it's difficult to even define "Powerful" in the context of SL. I mean, we can all create things from thin air, fly, and teleport! How much more powerful can anyone be? :)

Everyone in the game has the power to do, or be, or make, anything they can imagine.

Personally, I'd rather see an article that explains the enormous creative power we all have here, and that shows how anyone who wants to join our community can have that same power, instead of one that extolls the power or influence of a few.

I mean, it might be just me; but I can't get excited about money, or influence, or any of that stuff. I'm not here because of any of that.

I'm here for the creativity and companionship. That's the exciting part of SL, to me.

Just my two cents!

I once read somewhere that girls buy 75% of everything that gets bought. From that statistic it is no wonder that so much stuff in SL appeals to women. It does make you wonder though, if women buy the majority of stuff why is so much advertising made by and for males.

I dont know any really famous people, but this gwynth llewewyn person seems to have a popular blog and alot of friends, in the new citizens inc HQ an av named brace coral seems to be pretty popular as well.
