This project revolves around how women are participating and faring in a typically male dominated environment/genre. So, being a woman in RL is important. Individuals who are interested in participating in the story will be interviewed in RL.

Catherine

So they can have male avatars in SL as long as they are RL women?

Also: Alliez Mysterio and Caliandris Pendragon. There are others I could add though am not 100% of their RL gender (this is where the problems lie :( ), and am asuming Anshe is taken as read.

Isn't Anshe played by both her and her husband? How do we know which half?

Alliez for sure..

Alliez for sure! She is scary powerful. Fallingwater is powerful too. She can crush you with one twist of a prim. And Hosey can strike you down with her laser wit without even trying. She eats us lessors for breakfast.

Ones RL gender is irrelevent in SL. I was here for four weeks before someone asked me "are you a woman in real life?" and I was just so surprised by the question. Why do you care? What does it matter?

For what its worth, while there are many more female avatars in SL than male avatars, I suspect there are actually more male players than female players. Yes, I'm saying there is a sizable proportion of males playing females. And why not? And who cares?

Realistically, the question asked by Catherine Linden can really only be about females in SL, not females in RL. I don't have a good answer - Bacarra Rhodes, I guess, but I don't know how much she throws her weight around, even though she has weight to throw. I guess influence only surfaces when its exerted.

Oh, so yeah - Ami Webber, then, simply by virtue of being high profile. Fallingwater Cellardoor, by virtue of being financially successful. Using a different yardstick, though, I'd say Elikapeka Tiramisu, Hosequeen MacLean, Nyte Caligari are all very serious style setters in SL by virtue of the popularity of their products. I'd argue that they influence the popular culture of SL far more than Ansche. Its just a different kind of influence.

I am beginning to think that Bacarra Rhodes must be the real deal as I have been playing SL for over a year (almost every waking minute), and I have NEVER heard of her.

Could someone do what Catherine suggested and actually put up some reasons *why* these women are considered powerful? Who is Bacarra Rhodes and what the heck does she do anyway?

Also, I nominate Ulrika Zugzwang, the evil genius of Neualtenburg. ;)

If anyone should be on the cover of Cosmo or whatever this rag of a magazine is, it's her.

Baccara Rhodes is one of the most amazing event producers in or out of SL. her two major events Never land and Oz are the things Sl legends are made of. She is also an amzing artist and builder and along with her partner Mandella runs Home Depoz. she is also one of the kindest sweetest most sincere women I have ever met. call me biased but I am damn proud to call her friend. And I am one of very very many

well. Even though I was nominated by at least one person here I'd have to kind of pick some nits here. And not the nits Lewis picked because, well... while some of them may indeed be valid, I'm not trying to just be a contrarian. Mostly with one word.

"Powerful."

Yeah, I've been part of a very successful project as a Luskwood founder. You may even say that I'm somewhat influential (i'd beg to differ - I don't think I am.).

But power? I don't have any of that. Being prolific or successful does not neccessarily equate to power. So I think that a lot of the folks who have been nominated in this thread may be contributory , formative , creative , enterprising , influential , and maybe even popular or famous, but if you were looking at true power i'd have to say that the list gets pretty short.

Yes we all know who is the most =powerful= woman in SL. I'd have to agree that she is the most powerful person in SL beside the Lindens. Honestly, most "top" categories you could think of, our BusinessWeek covergirl would be the er, "winner" of. So I kind of having a feeling that this is just yet another re-celebration of the same person with a feinting of appeal to the public. Woopty-friggin-doo, I can't wait to see what the next rag has to say about her. SL's wunderkind . We get it already. So let's just assume that she's #1 in all of these categories and then look at some others.

Welcome-area ne'er do-wells: There are plenty of female ones of these. They have more "power" than many. Why? They influence newbies. They can act as gatekeepers, and signatories of the "face" of second life. Make fun of or discourage a newbie from staying in SL? You're exerting power. And some of the regulars there have become -quite- proficient at it.

Escorts: If this is about having power over certain parts of the residency in SL, you can't argue with what a scantily clad avatar will do to a guy.

I guess my point is: maybe this question should have been rephrased differently by Catherine. If we're going for "most powerful woman', we all know who that's going to be, and it's almost a joke that it's been asked.

Besides, Hamlet's article most recently detailed the "power elite" of SL. Why are we so interested in -power- ?

Some of the definitions of it:

"1. Strength or force exerted or capable of being exerted; might."
"2. The ability or official capacity to exercise control; authority. "

Why do we keep having to revisit this? Why can't we look for the most influential, most successful (in terms of what though?), most prolific people in SL.

For example, I don't think Torley became a Linden because she had power . I think she became a Linden because she had a lot of -other- valuable and desirable qualities.

There are a lot of people - men and women alike - and if you want to narrow it down to women for the purpose of this story, go for it: who are VERY contributory towards SL (as in, without them, SL probably wouldn't be as it is today) who will NEVER get any press. Because they don't care to "exert might" or "exercise control" based on their connections, financial status, or ownership.

Many of them have been mentioned in this thread. But I'll have to cede to the fact that college girls raising money for charity just doesn't have the BAM! POW! that a woman with power, control, and money does.

That's my two cents. I'm sure that it will be promptly inserted into the circular file for an undetermined period of non-review.

There are a lot of people out there who deserve some recognition. People who want all of SL to be a success, not just their own enterprise; people who do what they do for us all. (Does anyone even remember Bhodi Silverman and VERTU? How about some of the greeter/mentor regulars who -always- jump up and say 'I'll help!' when a Linden asks for someone to step in to help a lost newbie?) If I began the list, i'd have trouble ending it. And as I said, But because they aren't in it for the fame and power, they'll likely never get mentioned in any official declarative fashion.

Meanwhile, some of us will be over here to the side doing what we've been doing until SL closes its "doors".

I kind of doubt we'll see a top 10 list. If we do it'll probably just mirror Hamlet's in a lot of ways.

Alliez Mysterio

Alliez gets my vote! Besides being an exceptionally nice person, she goes out of her way to help people, answer questions, orient newbies and perform more than her fair share of public service (frequently outperforming the Lindens in that regard!).

Her "power" comes from strength of character and a genuine love of second life and its denizens. And She and her partner Tony have over 20 sims. :)

I'm really sorry, but... I really don't see how a "fluff" piece is all that horrible a thing.
-- it brings more publicity for SL in general.
-- Women make up a growing, but still under-represented group in the gaming industy as a whole.

Provided, of course, it isn't written like a "Barbie gets a make-over"... I'd also like to see something more than yet another Anshe-love fest (no offence to Anshe, I have alot of respect for what she's accomplished). As some of the other posters have mentioned there are women who create amazing content, and others who help move the game forward and ease the "newbie" nerves (entering something as big as SL can be a daunting prospect for some people, male or female) and then there are the ones who are just cool and a blast to hang out with.

A well written article highlighting a variety of the women in the game should have some very good results... but as a "n00b" myself I just don't know enough people yet to help with the choosing.

... besides... we all know Gamer-Chicks are hot  *ducks*

What about the 'Powerful' men of SL?
04-28-2006 05:16
I have heard of and also met a few 'powerful' women in SL, even IF their RL gender doesn't match. But then again I have also met some 'powerful' men in SL too...

This thread has brought alot of responses and good ones I might admit...but it has also brought a few bad ones from our SL men whom I think feel kinda slighted by this thread.

Could we possibly start a new one for the 'powerful' men in our SL community...just to even out the odds so to speak.

Note: A 'powerful' man to me would be one that has accomplished something that all of SL can benefit from; a man that is not controlling or egotistical; and most of all a man who is compasionate and respectfull towards others.

So on that note I will go and log into the game now....hugs to all, male and female!

Thank you,
SeXXXy Bliss (a 'real' woman (maybe not a 'powerful' one) in SL and RL!)

I nominate Sue Stonebender.

She connects people from various RL help groups to people who need RL help from within SL.

She organized or helped to organize several charity events.

She is currently hosting the "Camp Darfur" on her sim Better World.

This is the little I know about her. I'm sure lots people have much to say in her favor.
