:)

Who do you think are the most powerful women in Second Life and why? Either post to this forum or email me directly at catherine@lindenlab.com.

Remember, I need a Second Life name and, most importantly, WHY you think they are powerful.

Thanks!

May I ask, with complete respect, what do you mean by 'Women?' Are we talking SL appearance, or someone who is known to be a woman in RL?

The very nature of SL puts this in question, and I am actually curious about your answer.

Thank you.

I don't suppose "Goddess of Blumfield" counts for much does it?

I'm more curious about what you mean by "powerful." It's kind of an odd way to look at people in a world where anyone can do anything.

I assume she means influential, to be honest.

"Powerful Women" Defined
04-27-2006 12:01
Thanks for your prompt feedback.

Yes, I do mean women in Second Life who are also women in their first life.

When I say "powerful" I think of it in a couple different ways - influential, successful, social standing, wealth, achievements in-world. I'm also curious about what you think the definition is and that's why your "why" is so important to me.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Catherine

If it's Women in SL, then RL gender shouldn't be a consideration; I think you would be opening up a big box of trouble to do anything but that, IMO.

This project revolves around how women are participating and faring in a typically male dominated environment/genre. So, being a woman in RL is important. Individuals who are interested in participating in the story will be interviewed in RL.

Also: Alliez Mysterio and Caliandris Pendragon. There are others I could add though am not 100% of their RL gender (this is where the problems lie :( ), and am asuming Anshe is taken as read.

Well, that is an interesting premise - yet I have to agree that the more interesting story is the fact that it doesn't matter who or what you are in RL as you can choose to be male, female, animal, mineral or vegetable, etc., in SL.

My only concern is that Anshe is trotted out for every story about SL - yes, she is important, interesting, successful, etc. - but she isn't the only female in SL. And SL isn't just about being a land baroness or entrepeneur who makes their RL living here, though that seems to be the marketing strategy of LL these days.

I'd like to see more press about those who use SL as a window to a new world - where it doesn't matter if you are male or female, whole or disabled, highly educated or illiterate. Rather everyone comes into the world as a disorientated newbie with nothing - well a few $L - and can then make their SL existence into whatever they choose to.

~~

Edited as spelling matters.

Male dominated? I thought there were more women in SL than men. *shrug*

I'd pick Loniki Loudon, who makes the coolest Sky Pod's. Her stuff is a real work of art.

Also, I'd think that being a women in rl is certainly a requirement for this. That's the point, isn't it?

Not to go off topic, but I think all of the gender bending is rather disturbing. I personally think it's immoral to lie to someone and pretend to be something you're not. If you want to be a girl and you're a boy, just say so. This is reason enough (but rl for me is the main reason) to avoid any kind of intimate involvement with women here. There's no way to know for sure, and for me at least, that matters. I think if I were ever interested in someone I'd first require voice verification! lol. :-)

Cheers,

Contrary to my previous post, I'd agree with this 100%. There are far more female avie's running around than men, and far more goods for sale targetted to women as well. I think this contrasts greatly from other games (WoW for example).

I'm unsure what the point is. What is male domination in a world where you can choose to have your RL identity held secret?

Is there anything typical about the SL business world anyway?

What can you say about a RL female succeeding as an SL male? Or vice versa? Wouldn't any gender bias apply to a RL male living an SL female life if nobody knew the RL identity?

Can we skip all these threads anyway and just have the q's sent straight to AC's mailbox?

Shall we think this through logically?

This request is sexist and should be removed immediately.

It violates CS 1 "Intolerance" as it marginalises and belittles a whole group (males) in SL, plus by singling out a specific group for special treatment as to their achievements, it implies that others achievements are not as valid.

It violates CS 4 "Disclosure" as you are asking for real life gender information which may not be necessarily revealed on the player's profile.

Given LL's liberal attitude towards most things in game, I am very surprised and somewhat upset that such a sexist attitude is being promoted by LL in an official capacity.

Top achieving players should be just that, regardless of the gender of the human player behind them. If players are not allowed to be discriminatory in game, then neither should Lindens.

There's nothing sexist about it. It's just focusing on a specific class of people.

Perhaps for you. I, for one, don't feel belittled or marginalized at all. Please do not presume to speak for me.

What a load of crap. No one is forcing anyone to disclose this. It is all strictly voluntary. As usual, you are looking to stir up trouble.

Powerful? Everyone knows there's only ONE powerful woman in SL. I say that with all due respect while sucking on a strawberry lolliepop.

Being powerful imo means having an authoritive presence and being able to use that presence to influence change, be it good or bad.

Although there may be women who own businesses in SL and their own SIMS, I do not see them as being "powerful". A better word would be "influential". There are certainly a long list of influential woman in SL. And those who are powerful may not at the same time be influential to some.

Just my 2 cents =)

I dunno... methinks Lewis overstates, but he brings up some real problems with the article.

I don't think it's sexist, but the idea of basing a listing of people only on those individuals that want to "come out" in terms of giving their RL info is kind of an odd thing for LL to support. I can think of lots of RL women that I talk to everyday in SL that won't give their RL info to some silly magazine reporter, me included. :)

So it's kind of unfair that way and very poor taste of LL to promote it IMO.

Also, every woman who reads magazines has read a hundred of these types of "woman in a man's world" articles and how they have to struggle to get ahead etc.

I mean let's face it, it's basically just a Cosmo type "fluff piece," and not really even relevant considering some "powerfull women" in SL are actually men, and some really nice guys in SL are actually powerful women in RL.

So it will be a nice fluffy article about some nice hetrosexual RL buisness women that girls can read about at the beauty parlour or on the plane. My guess is that most of the real (female) movers and shakers will not be covered at all.

Except Anshe, she will always be there. :)
