From: Blake Rockwell Bush has aggression with spreading freedom.. I see it more as destroying freedom... According to the US Patriot Act, we are no longer allowed to criticize the president's policies during a time of war... There are other freedoms that act destroys but I won't get into them... I see the Constitution as being sacred. Anyone who pisses on it with something like the Patriot Act is guilty of treason in my eyes.

From: Kendra Bancroft On a point of strategy --I agree with you.
However -- "Bush = Hitler" isn't a strategy for me. It's my heartfelt opinion. I'm not running for a position in Government. It doesn't matter because the instant you identify yourself as a follower of a political party you represent that party, even if unofficially. When an undecided reads a post by you on the forums that can be sumed up to "Bush=Hitler I am voting Democrat" you are painting a picture of the Democratic voter for that person. To be honest I don't expect a change in tone for the 2008 elections. But I do think the angry tone is going to cost Democrats votes. Ok. The dead horse beaten. Time to go back to work. -aimee

That you would believe such propaganda is depressing in the extreme. Bush does not "have aggresion for spreading freedom." If his primary intent were to spread freedom, he would not have attacked Saddam Hussein, for Saddam Hussein is neither the greatest oppressor, nor the easiest oppressor to defeat. If his motive were truly one of spreading freedom, he would have intervened in Darfur. If his motive were truly one of spreading freedom, he would invade Cuba. There are literally a hundred ways in which Bush could have spread "freedom" to the people of this world. Instead, he attacked a scapegoat to hide his inability or unwillingness to pursue the real enemy, Osama bin Laden. In so doing, he lied to the American people, and stole billions of dollars from us to award to their pet company, Halliburton. Freedom never once entered into the equation.
Besides, Bush's particular brand of freedom is no better than that espoused by the Taliban. The pro-Christian initiatives which Bush has regularly undertaken smack of theocratic facism.

From: Omen Torgeson
I'm in world at the moment, shopping around. I came across a promising looking shop and was bent on making a few purchases. All of a sudden another avatar walks in.
(Name of Shop and Avatar is being withheld)
They're wearing a flagpole. And on it hangs the American Flag. Except it's at half mast, and upside down. And comes with a tie dye jetpack attachment. The object name states something to the effect of: "down with Bush."
I couldn't stop looking at this person, who sadly turned out to be the owner of one of the stalls in there when I realized they were adding it to the area for free giveaway.
Why is it sad that this person is a shop-owner? Why do people always pick on shop-owners in SL? What is wrong with an avatar making an honest living from selling their wares? I think it's good that a person can wear and show what they want in SL without fear. As a shop-owner, I often feel that I must take the middle road so as not to offend any of my customers and it's good that a person is brave enough that they can wear and show what they want in a shop they paid for and express themselves. On another note, Omen you said in a later post you didn't intend to make trouble with your post. Well, I don't buy that, I'm sorry. What thinking person makes a post like this one and *doesn't* expect a flame war?

To the originator of this thread.
I am an American citizen. I was born in America, raised in America. I am an American... and I do NOT support that despot that makes a mockery of the white house.
And if anyone has a problem with me excerizing my first amendment right, we can move onto them sucking my second amendment right.

Oh my goodness. Last I checked, I was living in a free country and I had the right to voice my opinion about anything and everything. Personally, and this is no slam on anyone, but I respect whom I choose and those that have earned it. I applaud anyone who has the temerity to risk attack by expressing themselves, whether I aggree with them or not. Isn't it fortunate that we have this lovely forum and the freedom to blast someone who chose to exercise that very same freedom?

I ask the same of you. What's next for George? Will he move on to killing innocent civilians in Iran, or is the plan to intensify the quagmire of Iraq?

misunderstandings all around
11-04-2004 09:00
This whole episode arose because (1) one person was insensitive to the deep-felt sentiments that many have developed for an American symbol and because (2) those who feel those deep sentiments have not bothered to learn the rules for flag display.
It is not disrespectful to display the flag upside down or at half mast. It is just a mistake to think that it is.
It is disrespectful, for example, to display the flag as a patch on your jean pockets, or attached to a surface with tacks through it, or with anything obscuring part of the flag, or to attach a cloth flag to a surface that allows it to drape limply without flying free.
If you claim to respect the flag, please learn the rules.
Also, if you claim to respect the flag, please respect the principles that it represents.
You can't have it both ways, you know. If you love America, love what she stands for. It's an inaguration, for crying out loud, not a deification.

From: Blake Rockwell What's next a Bus or Grocery Store? LOL NOT funny. the TV's not blown up, but suffice to say she gets quite irritable whenever i have that despot on streamed audio, video or on the television. Blake, are you suggesting that patriotic Americans (that get more than just annoyed when an elected leader passes acts that take away our constitutional rights) are terrorists?

Barbarra Blair, i couldn't have said it better myself. For those that don't know, flying the flag upside down is concidered a distress signal. And right now I think that it is quite appropriate! http://www.usflag.org/flag.etiquette.html

America - Love it or change it Yes, it definitely is. While this thread has become politically heated, the original poster of the thread had a right to post, and to feel offended. The person he was posting about in the first place was expressing their outrage as well, albeit in a more colorful way. I admit to being depressed by the outcome of the election, less about Bush winning than just a general sense of hopelessness. It's the same sort of malaise I am feeling about Second Life in some ways. It seems that ugliness, deceit and greed are what get you to the top, in SL and in RL. From my perspective, the Bush campaign was filled with the nastiest, most fear mongering rhetoric I have ever seen, and the reward for that is the White House. It lowest point was Dick Cheney stating that a vote for Kerry would ensure another terrorist attack. I see people so motivated by hatred, fear and intolerance that 11 states actively put discrimination into their constitutions to prevent gay people from marrying. I see the overwhelming influence of Christian religion on the tone of this country, the impuning of patriotism when you dissent, the slippery slope of reduced freedoms, and it all adds up to make me sad for the state of our country. One final note. The argument continues to be brought up that Bush was elected president, and thus deserves respect for that simple fact. Yes, he was elected, but at what cost? How low did his campaign need to go to do so? Can he look back on the campaign and say he promoted himself honorably? I don't think so. I am originally from Venezuela - I moved to the US 14 years ago. Currently, Venezuela has a freely elected president, Chavez. His presidency has been disastrous for Venezuela, and he has followed a similar path that the Bush adminstration has. He has limited speech, suppressed dissent, and driven the country toward financial ruin. Never mind that he also ordered a crowd of protesters to be fired upon (and killed many of said protesters in the process). In the end, he's president right, so he deserves respect? Before you say "President Bush has not killed anyone", you might want to check with the Iraqi people first. Sorry, my original point is respect is both earned, and lost. President Bush, President Chavez, and any other corrupt leaders do not have my respect, even if people were stupid enough to have given them a chance. PS - I don't vote upon party lines either, I have voted Republican in several instances. George Bush remains one the most unqualified people to ever hold the office of President, and a second term only gives him more time to prove that.

How the hell is this country in DISTRESS??? DURESS maybe....
The flag is not meant to be used as a sign of your feelings...just seems like the person was making a mockery or a joke of the flag. There was no disress or there was nothing warrenting it being flown at half mast...but thats just my opinion.
