Well I honestly don't think this is a topic to take lightly.

Um...I think it's sad that you didn't see that as humor. I don't watch the Jerry Springer show and pretty much despise it. It is just something that would fit right in with their ridiculous sensationalism: I Cyber My Mother Online!

As for the reasons that you probably shouldn't get yourself overly worked up about this:

1. If little Johnny is still living at home, chances are that his mother will glance at his PC screen at some point and see who he is or where he's at, especially if they both play SL.

2. If they both play SL, chances are at some point, and probably often, they would joke about, talk, discuss or otherwise know a tiny bit about each others accounts. Probably at least meeting in SL occasionally.

3. If they did somehow hook up in SL in a sexual relationship, chances are that they would probably share a little RL info at some point early on in thier relationship. I know that my relationships in SL involve at least some real life discussion.

4. If, with all these thousands of SL players roaming the world, they still managed to meet, fall in love/have sex, the chances would greatly favor that it was intentional at least on one party's part.

Now..about who is being naive...

Ok, Firstly I am not taking it lightly at all. I voted it a bad idea but it just doesn't matter. LL is going to do what they want. There is no way in hell they are going to be able to prevent what will happen as their are minors in SL now. How are they going to ensure adults don't get in ?? You raise valid points Cat but I am upset with your quick stereotype. I am a father of 3 and certainly don't think 11 year olds should have sex nor am I into kiddies either. I prefer leggy adult women over 40 how's that ?? Seriously, we can't do a damn thing about it but hope that this shit doesn't happen.

Well..I'm sure there are some that think 11 year olds have sex is ok, but I've seen no evidence of that on this forum.

I'm sure there are probably some into kiddies, but I've seen no evidence of anyone on this forum being so inclined.

And so far, I've yet to hear anything to be outraged over. That kids are online? That kids meet up online? That kids use chat programs online? That kids have avatars online? That kids use programs for kids online? that kids use programs for adults online??

Umm..this is all very old news and has been going on for years. Why the sudden outrage?

I know Pen but the shock value of it had its effect to get a point across. This seperateing or intergrating Kids to SL will be to say the least a frightening experience.

I think the Kiddie Grid should have been brought out and put up under a new name new parent company name and Completely Seperate from SL as a whole. By doing this now all the Kiddies that are currently in SL that have friends that their parents won't let them play due to the content and age restrictions now have an open door because the Kiddie Grid is owned by SL. LL has no way to distinguish between alt and Kiddie account now. So by opening a Kiddie grid like I mentioned previously we are opening the door to Law Suits.

It scares me yes, and on top of that knowing full well that this is now sponsored by LL the future of SL is tenious at best.

First off you're an adult and know what you like and dislike and what your preferences are. I prefer more mature women too, but again, I'm an adult and know what my likes and dislikes are. KIDS however, DON'T. So, are easily taken advantage of. I'm seriously afraid being in this 'visual' environment now, what teens and kids are going to learn from it.

As for LL if enough ppl speak out about this and tell them all of the bad things that they apparently are not yet seeing maybe they will reconsider the kiddie grid. I think by not discussing it we are doing a disservice not only to our own enjoyment of SL but a disservice to LL. For all the reasons everyone brought up this is the worst idea I have heard coming out of LL since beta. The more I read the stronger I feel about this.

Even tho I have never had av sex in sl the option was always there. To open a kiddie grid takes that option completly away from me. I would never consider it after the grid opens. Which for me takes away an option. Dunno if I would ever try it but it was nice knowing the option was there.

Just a note to some that think others dont take things seriously.

For one I take this very seriously as I have a 9yr old and there is no way I will let him play SL. Not even on the Kiddie Grid when he becomes 13 as he still will not be emotionaly mature enough to handle situations.

Second my post was done as shock and possible chance that could happen especially if Parents are divorced and Mom may have mentioned in passing she played SL. In addition to that my commentary was in reference a Kid that just come from the Kiddie Grid because they reached the Legal age to Play on the Mature Grid.

You have to understand this is a very real situation that could happen and the emotional and Mental Scars it can leave on both parent and child are disturbing.

What Scares me the most is the fact that LL has no true way of checking this information to see who is or is not of age to play SL. Short of everyone having to have a Finger or Eye print Scanner to verify acces there is no way and opens not only LL to Law Suits but each and every member of the primary Grid.


I voted it was a bad Idea because there are so many variables I dont think are being taking into consideration.

Now on the flip side of that. As I mentioned previously, had this been done where the "Kiddie Grid" was a totaly new name had its own website and its Parent Company Affiliation was not Linden Lab but another Psuedo Company name as a sub to LL then this may not be an Issue as a lot of the kids joining that would not put 2+2=LL and the temptation to migrate to the Mature Zone wouldnt be so Tempting.

But I digress and will prolly get flamed for my opinion on this.

Umm..the world is a visual environment. Kids have been playing in visual environments for years. As I've said before, Im sure LL will stress for all those on the Kid-Grid to immediatly report any "uncomfortable" or "abusive" behavior. They will also have Credit card numbers of those with accounts, and something were to happen, they could not only suspend these pedophiles, but also send the police.

As for kids dealing with kids, it happens all over, all around us, online, RL, etc.

I still haven't heard of anything to get overly upset about. Just a bunch of folks running in circles yelling about the sky falling.

My son will be only 12, but if he was 13, I would have no qualms about letting him play on the Kid-Grid. We have already had several, "If a stranger approaches" talks, as well as talk about what is and isn't appropriate for him online. I can see it as a chance for him to interact with people from different cultures, as well as enhancing his quickly growing computer skills and creativity.

You both make great and valid points and I sincerely hope LL is listening. I feel sure they will put in some sort of stopgap to keep the sex stuff from happening. What bothers me though, is there are in fact many minors already in our world and there is no way to stop it. I can't do anything about it though so I' m not going to get a migraine over it. I conduct myself according to my values, as I'm sure both you and Eins do as well. That is really all we can do, sadly so even in RL.

What is your point in quoting that catherine? Did you actually read the words? Waht part offends you? What part don't you agree with?

That many kids aged 13-17 do have sex with each other?

That my 11 year old comes home from school knowing some adult terms and phrases?

That kids between 13-17 probably know alot more than you think they do?
