I think the Solstice is the sexiest thing on four wheels at this point. And interestingly, it's very much a chick's car, appealing strongly to women buyers. I don't think it can be dismissed as curtly as you seem to have done, Jake.

I believe the Solstice's contoured styling makes it visually far superior to the Miata. The Miata used to turn my head years ago, but it can't hold a candle to the Solstice, as far as looks go:

SOLSTICE

MIATA

Comparison:
ENGINE:
Solstice: 2.4-L DOHC
Miata: 2.0-L DOHC

HORSEPOWER
Solstice: 177
Miata: 170

FUEL ECONOMY
Solstice: 20 city / 28 hwy / 23 combined
Miata: 25 city / 30 hwy

BASE PRICE
Solstice: $20,490
Miata: $20,995

While the Miata was ranked the top compact sporty car in the annual JD Power survey of initial quality (released June 7), the Solstice was too new to be considered this year. However, as a brand, the Pontiac topped Mazda in initial quality (133 problems per vehicle for Pontiac compared to Mazda's 150. The top brand was Porsche at 91 ppv while the industry average was 124).

Actually, the MX-5 Miata is a complete redesign, as Car and Driver reports:

So, as far as being a guinea pig goes, buyers of the new Miata may also fit that category.

C&D seemed to place the two vehicles about neck-and-neck, complimenting the Solstice for its rigid chassis and handling. On comparing the two vehicles, it had this to say:

I had a chance to drive around town in a Solstice that a friend was testing for GM. It was a sweet, sweet ride.

.........................

Oh she wants to dance, and talk hardware with the C&D comparison. I like a girl who knows her hardware-a lot. :)

So The solsitce is a 177 hp v. miata's 170. Solstice is 350 pounds heavier. Thats 7 horses needed to move two girls. 7 HP is not much compensation for a third of a ton of texas lovin' and despite the horsepower difference...the miata feels nimbler.

Now I confess that the only miata worth the effort is the sport model (base price $23500 or so), and it has one HUGE advatage over the Solstice, and I mean HUGE. A six speed transmission. Basically and sports car with a five speed is no loger a serious contender:) (okay so thats overstatment-but i have car with a six speed and one with a five speed, and I am thinking of buying an after market six speed to rectify the problem.

The soltice has a much longer gear box than the miata does, and this means the solstice is slower between 0-60, and in the quater. The mazda redlines at around 6750 rpm, and in sixth gear at 80mph, is soldily in its powerband revving at 4800rmp. At 80 mph the solstice is in fith lugging at 3000rpm..so you have to down shift to pass. As I said, the transmission is a huge deal.

Having driven both, well I can say that the Miata is about a million times more fun to drive. Yeah yeah the statistics are the same, but really, that is whole problem, the solstice was built to be competitive statistically, the miata was built to be fun to drive.
Yes the new mazda is a redesign, but it is a redesign based on years of experience, and it delivers.

The miata is more responsive than the solstice and feels more fluid through mountain turns. the solstice, beign heavier, actually holds the road very well and has a good bit of stiffness to it. At the base model, this gives the edge to the solstice, but the miata sport has a suspension option (along with the six-speed) that edges out the solstice.

As far as the interior. There is no real comparison: the miata wins hands down-espcially in the details such as lower wind noise and trunk space.

The solstice is a good looking car, and is a good car, for one designed by bean counter. But it was desingerd to compete with the miata number for number, and was given a sexy body. Unfortunately the MIata is greater than the sum of its parts, and the solstice is not.

Of course I still would not trade my '91 for a 2006, but thats me.

As far as pacific Islands. I would look into Palau, esepcially if you like to dive. Or oddly enough, Tarawa. Of course Guam is wonderful, and very doable, but its not off the beaten path. However, Rota, between Guam and Saipan is off the beaten path.

Also You can't really go wrong in american Samoa.

you mean a Forgotten Old Rebuilt Dodge? :p I prefer the lines on the newer Chevy's than the Fords. My old truck was a Ford and it was alright, best truck out there in the 3/4 ton market is the Dodge though. Can't beat a Cummin's Diesel :D

At what point to you get, Billyboob, this is not a discussion. If you are going to post, ask a question. If you ask a qauest you you can spout all your misguided notions about cummis desiel power :).

No, actually they have not. I may not like what they are doing, but it makes business sense. Exapnd expand expand. More users means SL is a bigger market, bigger markets mean that more RL compnaies take notice of the platform-initiallly perhaps for virtual marketing and RL/SL product interleave, but after that, compnies with a presence in SL can appreciate the tools it has for education and training, as well as entertainment.

SO LL knows it needs to build its user base, not move to a larger niche to increase awareness of the platform. LL also knows they need more diversity-they need more than early adapters, they need consumers. They are making it easier for the consumer to enter the world, at the expense of the gamers. this is fine.

Of course I also take very much to heart Philip's vision of LL as innovators and not administrators. Perhaps they seek to grow the user base enough that another entertainment compnay can come in, buy SL, and administer it, and then they could retain LL to do the development.

I too love the Pontiac Solstice
06-20-2006 14:31
Im with Margaret on the Pontiac - sorry Jake. But I too am troubled by the color choice.

I am a hot blonde and was thinking I would look good in red-- hot red! Rawr.

Im a very sophisticated diva and at times show signs of intelligence so silver may be the ticket.

But then the black one just screams mysterious and adventure - which is soooo me.

But white? White for a roadster?' You got to be kidding - its so so so common.

Where did you get your placing the right woman in the right car degree at anyways?

Jake--

Why did Cesar Romero (Joker in the 1960's Batman series) get away with not shaving his mustache, and being blonde?

Oooooh, we can agree to disagree, Jake, but I have to speak up to this. The Solstice is Bob Lutz's baby. I've had the chance to talk with him a few times now (sometimes I lead a charmed life) and he is anything but a beancounter, and god knows GM has more than enough of those making go/no-go decisions. Slit his wrists and the man will bleed engine oil. He is passionate about cars like no one else I've ever met (including the rest of the top floors of GM's HQ).

I personally think the Solstice was designed not just to be an eyecatcher and showroom draw for Pontiac, but also to get women enthused about automotive style. And I think it has worked.

Heck, I want one. I've never said that about a two-seater before.

Ok, question: You could spend a day visiting any time period, any place in the world. Where and when would you go and why?

I drive a white roadster and it rocks:) Appreciating white is like loving vanilla-it takes subtlety and a fina appreciation of nuance, and you do not get distracted by the superficial. White is the smart woman who doesn't know she is beautiful. White plays to the imagination, and never quite leaves you certain.

A red car is a tramp-she wants to be seen and wanted everyone to know she is beautiful.

Black, well black says confront me, deal with me, I am going to be in your face. And I hate you for being red. Silver says I am above it all and i really wish I were a jaguar. Yellow says Hey I have character and charm, and appreciate my body because you will never like the color. Blue says I want to be yellow, but am not bold enough to get away with it.

Its not about placing the woman in the car, its all about the car:)

Really though, if you want to express your self, you are never going to find it in a factory paint job. They are about compromise. If Car Color is your thing, then you need a custom job. for me, color is not material, perfromance is. When I am driving I see the road, not the car, and frankly I don't care what the people in the rear view mirror say.

I drive a 91 miata because, after i got done with the suspension, it owns the road. The car, unlike either the new miata or the solstice leaves you open. In a new miata, you are one with the car. In an old miata, you are one with the world.

For the first time I am tempted to not spank someone who failed to answer a question. Tempted, but well, it is colette... and who can resist colette?

So the miata spends years trying to shed the reputation of being a chick car, and the soltice is trying to be one. If there were compelling reasons to buy a pontiac soltice (or saturn sky) I would not feel like I got the shaft. As I said..its a good car. The miata is just a better car lol. If I were going to go GM, frankly I would be all about the cadillac CTS. And if I could have my pick of 2006 two seaters, I'd buy a Lotus Elise.

But right now I am biased. Besides, my miata is modified to suit my taste. :)

I think I would like to meet socrates, in athens and talk to him for a day.

depends on if you beleive in destiny, or if life happens randomly. Frankly I am a fan of random coincidence.

Black leather, red paddle, sliver spiked heels. And I do not know if you will enjoy it..I guess that depends on if she spanks you hard enought. Collette and ZuZu are masters of their craft.
