Hey Jake,
Why does Ben & Jerry's always end up discontinuing
the ice cream flavors I like best? Does this indicate
that I just like unpopular flavors, or are they trying
to tell me something?
-Ilia

No ben and jerrys hopes you will get hooked on the new flavor, and then will flock back to the store when they do a "special limited release" of the old flavor. They sell more ice cream this way. Its the lipstick law really-I am told that just about the time a woman decides that she really likes a shade, looks good in it, and will wear it all the time, it gets discontinued.

I don't have the problem, I like vanilla Ice cream, that way if I want a different flavor, I just add to it.

Jake, why do people end the statement "I don't know?" with a question mark?

( awaits the inevitable, witty, yet unsatisfying answer soon to follow >< )

Because it can be either a declarative statment of fact, meaning that the person does not know. Or, it can be an interrogatory, meaning the speak expects an answer. A third possibility is that it is used as a rhetorical question, where the answer is immaterial or unknowable.

Why was it called "Jake and the Fat Man" instead of "McCabe and the Thin Man"?

Because fat guys are cooler than skinny guys? And Jakes are always cool...
Besides the thin man had a bunch of movies and maybe they were woried about confusion between the two. Of course I always get the thin man and the third man mixed up.

*dons her latex catsuit*

Since Ricard and Taco clearly see a spanking from Felicity as a reward and because I have a reputation to maintain, may I spank the two recent offenders?

Naked people: Are you for them or against them, Jake? :D

(By the way, welcome back--the forums missed you) <hugs>

Well really the fact that some one is naked is not something I would hold against them. So i suppose I am for naked people. I like lingerie too.

In this case the ? would indicate a variation in timber if the statement was spoken and also an implied question. I believe the underlying question to be: is I don't know an acceptable response?

(waits for spanking)

Clever, ending your sentence with a question mark in the hopes that I do not recognize its responsive and declarative nature. You are devious. But we live, sleep, eat, breathe in questions here, and I know a statement. You will be spanked. Felicity will spank you, then Zuzu, because you get a double.

Dear Jake,

I want a spanking from Felicity. Thank you.

Done. If it were anyone else I would deny you, and turn you over to Zuzu's capable hands, but I am your freind, so you get your wish. Of course that means ZuZu has to spank somone. So why not have Zuzu spank felicity, while felicity is spanking you.

When you get there, Taco, speak highly of me.
:)

Jake, what do you do when you're bored?

I try not to get bored, because If I did get bored I would have no idea what to do, which would make me bored.

Of course I could always read a book.

So are you saying that "I don't know?" is just a horribly lazy contraction of "I don't know, what?/who?/where?/etc?"?

And

Who gives the best spankings?

Well that would be partially true. Though much of it depends on context.
An I don't know who gives the best spankings-its my thread, i don't get spanked.

Being spanked is not in my nature. While spanking seems to be a wildly popular fetish among the SL crowd (you don't have to be a gorean to like being naughty), I confine my enjoyment to the administration of spankings. Getting spanked is just not my thing.

In AJA i delegate it to Zuzu and Felicity. Trust me you will be glad I did too, since Felicty will spank you now.

Well, while we're waiting for Felicity to try to come spank me, I could use some help figuring this out.

WTF is going on with my video card?
I got the game F.E.A.R. as a present over the holidays and it's a pretty fun game, when it's not glitching horribly...which is always. A bit after I started playing it I started getting "artifacts" or random polygons that don't belong. I turned down the graphics settings but they persisted. If they go on long enough the system freezes for a moment. The graphics just *stop* and a few seconds later the sounds stops. A few seconds after that the game picks up where it left off. I don't mean lag shows me what happened after a few seconds, I mean the ENTIRE computer stopped for a few seconds then continued.

Before I got FEAR I played World of warcraft just fine and dandy with all the pretties turned up. Now those artifact polygons have infected all of my other games, like WoW and now Empire at War. The very weird thing is, the problems only start if I stay in one spot too long. I've tested this, and aslong as I keep moving in any of these games some random polygons may appear but it never gets bad enough to get close to a system temp-freeze.

And the video card's temprature keeps spiking past 90-95 degrees celcius. Yes, ALL of the fans in the computer are working. I have checked many times. It is also getting plenty of ventilation, just as much as before the problems started. The ambient temp of the whole computer is about 60-65 degrees.

I have no idea what is going on. Is it really possible that a commercial quality program can FRY a videocard? (sub-question, not the main one I'm asking you, heh).

It's a Geforce 6800 Ultra 256mb card.

Howdy Jake,
You may have already answered this.

I am explaining SecondLife to a co-worker and He asked me if there is
Health/Life Insurance in SecondLife.
I explained about how you could fall from the highest hights and plunge to the ground and get up and brush yourself off.
and I explained how if you are in an area where you could (Die), That in the event of Death, You actually get teleported back to your home location.
But I told Him I would ask.

So,

Is there such a thing as SecondLife Health Insurance?

I'm running a 6800 GT 256mb and I've had no problems. Might be a problem elsewhere. I assume you've got the latest drivers and the rest of your hardware is up to scratch?

On another note, not sure if you're still taking questions Jake but if you are I was wondering what you need to do to get a LSL script to detect the age of an avatar? I know it's been done, but I can't find out how.

Oh and why are there so many stairs and lifts in a world where people can fly? With the exception of role-playing values and First Life representation.

Would anyone mind telling me how to capture video in machinima?

Is it the start/stop movie option under file? How can the camera be changed to stay at one angle while the character moves around at different angles?

Thanks a bunch!

Might be a heat issue, but it may not be your card at all, might have a problem with the motherboard or your memories. 90-95 C. is hot. But really a program can't fry a motherboard. I would seriously reconsider cooling. Are you over clocking at all? if so, go liquid. Get a biggers case, more fans. 60-65 degrees C is to hot for a normal load. they name of the game is cooling, cooling cooling.

Well usually detecting the age of teh avi is simply a matter of looking at the profile. I suppose you might want this in a heads-up display, but I don't see the point. All the women here are legal-does any other age question actually matter?

And stairs and lifts are useful when you get high enough that you cannot fly, and they are useful for people who can't fly due to lack of skill, practice or patience. SL architecture is evolving, but a vernacular will beformed. Hopfully peopel will see virtual enviroments as something more useful than a waterfall sonar array-a la Matrix.

I would think this question might find a better answer in technical support. However if you want to explore the answer with some hands on expereince, IM me in game. I';; provide poseballs and my george bush avie, and we can work out all the details in SL's first avi prom machima. Its bound to happen sooner or later.
:)

Frankly I have not paid much attention to the updates, my understanding was you needed a sepearte video capture plug-in to do machinima, but hey I said you could ask anything, not get answers to anything.

Dear Jake,

I'm having New England Clam Chowder for lunch. What should I have with it.... Ritz Crackers or Premium Saltine Crackers?

Respectfully submitted,
