Why is it that drinking something cold too quickly will cause the most unbearable pain for about 5 minutes?

Ahh she surrenders to to the lure of the forums at last.

the icecream headache, if you will, is caused when a cold substance comes into contact with the roof of the mouth. At the back of the palate is a bunch of nerves called the
spheno-palatine ganglion. These nerves extend into the head. When
stimulated the nerves contract or relax the blood vessels nearby. Sensing the cold
substance on the palate, the nerves stimulate the blood vessels to
dilate in an attempt to bring in more blood to warm up the area. The blood
vessels dilate, and it is theorized that this dilation is the cause of the
pain. The pain experienced during migraines is also thought to be the
result of blood vessels dilating.

Oddly enough a study done by Dr. Robert Smith (founder of the
Cincinnati Headache Center) found that ice cream headaches occur only in
warm weather. He was unable to reproduce the pain of an ice cream headache
in the winter, even when he applied crushed ice to his palate! this particular phenonmena has yet to be explained.

I have some questions for you Jake....

Why do fools fall in love?

Does anybody really know what time it is?

Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight?

How many roads must a man walk down before you can call him a man?

Yeah. Don't remind me, I'm disappointed in myself. Weak, I'm so weak..

And thank you, that's quite fascinating. I'm going to have to remember to try that in colder months just to test that out.

Hey, this is kinda fun! I think I'll ask another.

Why is it that I never get enough sleep?

Answering your questions in order:

1. everyone falls in love. Fools need love too. Its ok to be afool and fall in love. However some very intelligent people fall in love and then are foolish about it, and that's bad.

2. Well time in essence is an artificial abstraction of an observable phenomena. This abstraction is agreed to by consensus, but really we don't fully know what time is. If you want to know the philosophy and science behind it, then read Hawking's A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME.

If you are buddhist, time is an illusion as you likely flwo with time so each instant exists and is gone and to think beyond the moment is to be trapped in illusion.

Finally, The US governemtn has dictated what time it is: http://www.time.gov/

3. No, your chewing gum loses its flavor after the first ten chews. Sticking it on your bedpost is disgusting and you deserve the plethora of bacteria that accumalte on the stale gum.

4. Its not the number of roads walked that make a man. It is how he walks them.

good questions, thanks for reading. thank you all for reading and keep the questions coming.

Well this was stolen by me from http://www.sleepfoundation.org/hottopics/index.php?secid=17&id=163:

Sleep is a basic human need, as important for good health as diet and exercise. When we sleep, our bodies rest but our brains are active. Sleep lays the ground-work for a productive day ahead. Although most people need seven to nine hours of sleep each night to function well the next day, the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) 1998 Women and Sleep Poll found that the average woman aged 30-60 sleeps only six hours and forty-one minutes during the workweek. A more recent 2002 NSF Sleep in America poll of all adults revealed that women are more likely than men to have difficulty falling and staying asleep and to experience more daytime sleepiness at least a few nights/days a week. Research has shown that too little sleep results in daytime sleepiness, increased accidents, problems concentrating, poor performance on the job and in school, and possibly, increased sickness and weight gain.

Getting the right amount of sleep is vital, but just as important is the quality of your sleep. Biological conditions unique to women, like the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause, can affect how well a woman sleeps. This is because the changing levels of hormones that a woman experiences throughout the month and over her lifetime, like estrogen and progesterone, have an impact on sleep. Understanding the effects of these hormones, environmental factors and lifestyle habits can help women enjoy a good night's sleep.

So basically on top of all this there is your tringo habit and all your SL jobs, and Your RL job, and no matter how much sleep you think you are getting it cannot possibly be enough!
So sometimes you have to let SL and RL go, and focus on getting rest. It makes you a nicer evil kitten samurai.

Dear Jake,

I am having an emotionally difficult and depressing time with the fact that my older daughter flew the nest and went to college yesterday, which makes me a cliche. This is difficult even though, or maybe especially because, she is at a school only thirteen miles away.

Do you have any advice that would help me?

Transitions in life are inevitable, and feelings of emptiness and lost are somewhat self indulgent. While the sorrow of missing someone who has lived with you for so long is natural, don't cling so much to it, that you lose sight of the problems before you.

You have a daughter in college. This is her time to fly. Let her go. But remember you are always her mother and thus as she learns to live on her own, you will be the one to help her when she falls, and support her when she needs confidence, and share both her sorrows and triumphs for years to come. She is not gone from you life, she just moved out fo the house. She needs to do it, its her time, but she can only do it well if she has the blessings of her mother to move forward (and the knowledge of a warm bed and safe home waiting should she crash and burn).

On the other hand you have other children in the house and they still need a mother. Turn to the task at hand. We live our lives stretching for tommorrow, not pining for yesterdays. It is hard to discipline yourself to concentraete more on what is and not what was, but this is essential. Don't find something to occupy your time or distract you from your sorrow. Get out and live!

I hope this helps some.

Thank you, Jake! That was beautiful. I will refer to it over the next week or so, so I don't forget.

And I definitely hope she doesn't crash and burn!

The morning she left, I said to her the very first sentence she ever said, which was, "Birdy fwy!" (That meant "fly," not "fry," lol.) She loved it.

Well Billy, since you did not bother to ask a question but just put in filler commentary, I read your post to be "Where does the slang term chick, in used as reference to a woman, come from?"

I looked it up and found basically nothing as to the origin of the slang term except this:

"As slang for "young woman" it is first recorded 1927 in black slang, popularized 1960s."

Beyond tha I am mystfied as to why we call women chicks. Frankly I like Broads and Dames more than Chicks. But my favorite random reference to women is tomato! As in "Look at the gams (meaning legs of course) on that tomato!"

Yeah, I'm more a broad than I am a chick, and tend to refer to other women as broads as well. But yes - I guess it is the female thing. What burdens we broads have to carry! No doubt genetically and evolutionarily ingrained.

Dear Jake,

How much duct-tape would it take to actually secure an average-sized adult male(Say, between 5'9" and 6' and weighing around 180 lbs) to a wall in such a way that they were suspended without touching the floor?

Dear Jake,

What is the current record for the largest sized cockroach? I ask because I think I just ran into a possible contender in the bathroom at my workplace.

OK I am straight male. What you do with men in your own time is very cool with me. I mean diversity makes the world go round and all. I am sure there are websites that can aswer this question, with visual examples and 18 USC 2257 disclosure statements, but that is really not my cup of tea. I use duct tape to fix things around the house. Others make purses wallets and prom dresses from the stuff.

What you do with duct tape is your own business, enjoy it in peace, but it may be illegal in Georgia.

Dear Jake,

What is the purpose and value of cockroaches anyway?

They are totally disgusting. They are completely pointless! As far as I can tell. And yet they are bajillions of years old on the evolutionary ladder, I've heard.

What good do cockroaches do the earth?

Hey Jake,
Why is it that the villains are always more interesting than the heroes in movies? Is it the cooler clothes, the wittier lines, or something else?

As far as the cockroach, I figured a picture orf the monster was worth a thousand words. And if you can come up with anything scarier than the thought of a four inch cock roach waiting in your bathtub, make horror movies they need the talent. Besides the damn thing scared me witless.

As far as the Weather and mood: who knows. Some people are happy when it rains. However, unless you are a die hard Jesus and Mary Chain Fanatic, or a regular in Transylvania or NOMINE, then you are sad and gloomy when it rains. And if you are a buddhist-you know the rain is illusory.
