Well I'm pointing out the fact that you have to be registered to view that site. Maybe you can in the future take a screenshot and upload it to imageshack, so people who don't have accounts on that forum can see what your'e showing. To take a screenshot press "prt screen" then open photoshop or ms paint and make a new document and paste it. After that save it as a file and go to imageshack.us and upload.

You can read Stratics Second Life without registering... the only part which requires registration is the "Off Topic" part which is along the veins of Second Citizen, but without the death threats.

My role there is "Content Manager". This means I have two roles:

1) Help Guides. Co-ordinating the production of the various "Help Guides" which are there to help new players understand what's going on.

2) News. Although the news staff work amongst themselves to find things to report on, I also have some minor responsibility in making sure I let them know of anything I hear about so it can be covered. As well as news, there are also reviews of new things of general interest if it is felt appropriate, such as the yesterday's opening of Wheelies.

My only input in the forums is that I happen to post on them. Forum moderation, policy and suchlike are not part of my job description or sphere of influence. There is a global "Rules of Conduct" policy, which cover most sensible things like no posting of real life information on another person, no pornography, etc, and when forums are 'official' there are occasionally additional rules enforced by the game company (such as EA banning talk of selling game items for real cash on the TSO forums). I have worked for a year or so as a Sims Online content editor (meaning I write them, not oversee them), and you'd be more than welcome to drop over there and have a look at the many guides I've done there as well.

I would urge you all not to discount Stratics Second Life, because it is part of the world's largest multi game MMORPG forum site, and has a reputation for quality - just because I happen to have a minor involvement.

Also for the record that link clears my name, but ofcourse it isn't drama so you may not be as interested in reading it....

It's certainly of interest to me. I haven't been running around to the different forums to even BEGIN to understand what this is about, or who all the players are.

But I've been in SL long enough to be able to recognize a lynch mob when I see one.

And I've seen more than enough of people "deciding" one person is another. Needless to say.

Funny thing is, even if a person WERE guilty of whatever it is they are being accused of, even beyond any doubt, sympathy still ends up going to them, for having been the prey of a pack of hounds (in addition to having to stoop to whatever the crime was in the first place).

And the hounds so vicious in their perusal end up damaging their own rep for it, whether they are right or not.

Glad to know you are out of the woods on this particular piece of crap done to you, Sensual.

coco

P.S. As I've said before, one of these days people are gonna go after the wrong person - one who isn't strong enough to withstand the assault, and what happens then is gonna be on their heads. Something they will get to live with for the rest of their lives.

are you really talking about guilt and innocence after you made the accusation you did about FIC.TIONAL?

I have been reading this since last night and have seen several mentions of "living in a different country" , "dispute between two content creators" etc etc

So just for the record - NO - it wasn't me either.
( I was tucked up in bed at the time of the post and have a witness to that effect )

I personally do hope that the police are involved and that whoever posted it either lands up behind bars or is ordered to under go a period of extensive psychiatric treatment.

The internet contains many elements of the freedom of speach, but it is still governed and ruled by the laws of the country it abides in.

Threaten to kill someone in the street - you go to jail.
Threaten to kill someone in a newspaper - you go to jail
Threaten to kill someone on the internet - I think you will next be seen in jail or a rubber room.

Ok Mulch,

I strongly believe the victim here should bring criminal charges against the person who made this poll and anyone who voted in it.

Cocoanut,

A single person made the accusation against Sensual, and I asked her to remove it from this thread so the point of the topic did not get derailed (which she did and started a thread herself). There has been no lynch mob against Sensual, I don't think anyone but the original accuser thinks she did this (I definitely don't) - there certainly hasn't been a lynch mob in this thread. The topic at hand is the fact that a death threat and rape poll were made about someone. You are worried about the impact being accused of doing this has on someone - what about the impact it has had on the person whose life was threatened, and who was the subject of the rape poll?

I already bought up this subject, questioning the logic not only of letting the post remain on SC, but dragging it over here as well to cause more embarrassment to the subject by spreading the shit wider. The responsible thing to have done would have been to remove the posts immediately and permaban the culprit, then taken it up with the individual and offered your full assistance should they wish to involve law enforcement agencies.

Defamation and libel especially are both difficult legal standards to prove. People run around using the word libel (and mistakenly, slander) in these forums a lot, but very rarely does the actual offense rise to the level of true libel that could be proven (and won) in a court of law.

There is also a free speech balance to consider - making moderation rules is not as clear cut as you think. Death threats and rape polls? Hell yes, there should be zero tolerance - the same for the publication of private RL information such as names, addresses, etc. However, where do you draw the line in allowing people to freely speak their minds and express their opinions? It is something that any forum struggles with- if you go too far, you create a chilling effect and limit important speech, and if you don't go far enough, things like this happen.

To be honest, Cristiano, speaking from the depth of my inexperience, it doesn't seem difficult to me.

1. Hate speech. Inflammatory speech directed at minorities.

2. RL Information.

3. Anything illegal that is not covered by 1 and 2.

Mind you, having said that, I like the way you moderate sluniverse.
