Disturbing level of hatred

Anyone who has participated in SL related forums for any length of time has seen some pretty nasty interactions between people. It comes with the territory - I suppose it is SL's version of PVP action. However, this morning I saw something that reaches I think one of the lowest points I have seen, and as jaded as I am about forums, really disturbed me.

On a third party forum site, a user posted a clear death threat against MadamG Zagato, warning that if she shows up at the next SLCC she will be shot and asking if anyone wants to help take a stab at her. That alone would have been enough, but a different user (though who knows, they could be the same person) started a poll on the best method to use to rape MadamG, with poll options detailing various ways to rape her.

I don't even have words for how sickening I think this is. No matter how much you may dislike someone, wishing that level of violence on them is pathetic and beyond disturbing. What further blows my mind is people have participated in the threads, adding further insult to injury (and perhaps even guilt by association). These are not harmless posts - people have been stalked, raped and murdered by people who track them down from online.

I notified MadamG because I don't think she reads the particular forums in question. The forum operator has indicated he will cooperate with authorities, so hopefully criminal actions with be pursued against the people who created these posts. How in the hell does it even come to this?

I imagine that people who make those kind of threats would most likely shit a brick in a face to face confrontation. If you don't feel comfy naming the forum here, would you mind send it to me in PM s'il vous plait?

this person went beyond flaming into real life interstate fedal crime territory

its up to MadameG to get the ball rolling, but a proper request from law enforcement should help them get to the bottom of this

i run a business and i used to take CODs, one idiot decided to place a COD order every day from different addresses... it set of alarm bells so i checked the IPs, they all came from the same domain, an ISP in another state

i called the ISP and told them to ask the customer to stop or I would go after their customer with law enforcement for wire fraud. i told them the exact time of each of the orders and the IP each time and they said they would contact the customer

they did, and not only did the COD orders stop, but the person IMed an apology for placing the orders 2 days later

with law enforcement, i'm sure the IP will lead them to the front door in minutes, if they have the proper materials and MadameG takes the appropriate measure. i dont think FIC will hand out any info directly to madameg, but that is a good thing... let the law work this one out

incidently cris, i heard they hit SLU as well, but i didnt see anything when i went there... did you get rid of them, and if you did, did you keep the IPs and text for MadameGs use later if she requires it

i love trolling and flaming, but i agree with cris, what this was was so far out of line i can't wait for charges to be filed

I would also would like to know which forums these are so I can avoid them like the plague.

If this is going on there, name them, they deserve it.

the posts are still up as there is no moderation, but this goes so far beyond forum hijinks that i dunno, leaving them for historys sake would be good so we can show the mug shot, full name, and address of the writer when this all comes round and it becomes part of the public record

Not that I am condoning that sort of action in any way, but that's what happens when you mix unverified registration and an unregulated forum. Some people just take advantage of the situation and show that, however much some people protest, rules are required.

we do have drama, but this was beyond anything i have seen before

but, the real posters there basically derailed thier attempts with pictures of yummy ethnic food and drink and the perp went away after an hour or so

despite what lewis said, we handle our own there pretty well... the apparent victim of one of the impersonators was contacted already...

heres the point about SC that some are missing, the community moderates itself

we can be crude, immature, and mean spirited yes, but, we don't pull the crap that went on last night and we don't allow that kind of bullshit to accomplish its goals

we are good, and intelligent people, intelligent enough to realize it was a hatchet job from the start

No, they did not post anything about her on SLU - there is an ongoing thread of Sensual's there but the latest post in it is actually someone posting something positive about her. I checked as soon as I saw the SC posts.

I know FIC's policy on moderation, but even so, I do have to admit, I question the wisdom of leaving those threads visible.

I've been seeing a lot of very nasty things being said the last couple days that are just out of bounds. HAHAHEHE yeah it's the internet, people, but actions like this are criminal and many cases of internet stalking go unprosecuted but you just need ONE law officer with a hard-on to make a name for himself and you're going to be finding yourself on the wrong side of an extradition.

i am no innocent(possibly the most guilty), but trust me, i dont launch into attacks on a whim, unprovoked

just because the venue has the rep of being the coliseum doesnt mean there are always battles, that slaves are thrown to the lions, or that the bar isn't as friendly as any you have ever ventured into or that it is possible to see the fights from ringside and not enter the fray when it happens

stomping through a snake pit with no regard for anyone but yourself is a sure fire way to get bitten

being kind and considerate will earn you respect

and you have to admit, if they are found and prosocuted, their mugshot will be a strong deterent for anyone else to try similar things

they did in no way add any credibility to the poster, and i think you should applaud those of us who worked together to protect someone who is not even a member of our community, because it was the right thing to do

we are adults and know bullshit, and the posts i saw from the regulars hardly helped this persons cause

This could have happened in any forum, including your beloved Stratics. The threads would have been removed, but there is nothing stopping them from being posted in the first place. Verifying an email address as legit is hardly any kind of verified registration. This isn't about Second Citizen, it's about the fucktards who posted such garbage.

This is a serious issue - and is directly related to stuff that has happened in SL spilling over into RL death and rape threats.

I've been bitten there, but you know what? I deserved it. I got called out for being a bitch in a thread, took my verbal punishment and all is well.

I guess it's one of these damned if you do/don't things. If it's left as it is, then it's open invitation for further attacks like this... but then if it's tampered with, then it puts under question the whole no moderation thing.

In any case, the attacks in question are so incredibly stupid and mean-spirited, i'd say the author is shooting themselves in the foot with them more than anything. Hard to imagine they'd invoke anything but sympathy and support for MadamG, for being attacked in such manner o.o;
