She's abusing the freedoms that SC give us to either deride SC or she's so filled with pus and hatred for someone that's she's breaking RL laws.

I didn't mean to insult the people who do stick up for us. I am just tired of being sucked into such negative environments. I appreciate those of the SC community who do stick up for people, myself included. I just don't want to be a part of it right now.

I am promoting them in this thread in paticular because I am appauled that people are allowed to post such nasty things on other forums. I need people to know there is an alternative. I need them to know they don't have to go deal with nasty things.

The responsibility for this lies with the person(s) who posted the threads. I may not agree with the moderation policies of SC in some circumstances, but it could happen in any forums, even yours - it would just be hidden from view but would not have stopped the original offense.

If we are doing glib over-simplications, the one that comes to mind is that there is no freedom without a structure of law in the first place.

I mentioned nothing of "security" though, only of morals and of the level of personal danger engendered by the users of a business run by people without any sense of community, responsibility or moral obligation.

I've lurked in the secondcitizen forums for a while, and frankly I haven't seen anything that makes me eager to de-lurk. It's not the lack of moderation I mind (I'm a vet of IRC and Usenet, fergodsakes), it's the infinite potential for self-serving drama.

All that said, it is only fair to note that the perp in this case is one person. It's also not his first tasteless, offensive post over there. I doubt that people with his kind of morality give a shit about peer pressure but maybe a call from a law enforcement agency or Madame G's lawyer would get his attention. He's not as anonymous as he thinks.

I undertand that, and again, my apologies if my mentioning an alternative has offended anyone. That was not my intent. My intent was to show that it does not have to be allowed. And there are other places where insults are less likely to occur. Much less infact.

Relating to the threat in question, and nothing personal against the forum it occured on, the thread should have been deleted and the IP logged/blocked. However, allowing insults and general immature activities opens one up to this sort of thing.

There is no denying that what has occured is horrible and childish. It is unfortunate.

I've done both. Whilst I will freedly admit this type of thread is not common over there, the atmosphere does lend itself to frequent unwarranted personal attacks, I know because I've been a target several times.

If you don't know how SC works first-hand, then frankly you have no place to comment that this is unfair.

Do you mean the kind of misery that calling someone "evil" and implying that they are "addicted to ... misery" brings? Because I'm actually not addicted to it.

I edited my original post to remove the first sentence because upon reading, I did realize that is not what you were doing. No need to apologize. I also agree that the threads should not remain and the posters should be banned, but it is not up to me to dictate SC"s moderation policy. Ultimately the community of people who post in any forum will determine what is acceptable to them or they will move on to find a place that is.

I think an even larger issue is how far people are willing to go - in the past year, there has been a really sharp rise in just the sheer nastiness level of blog postings, forum postings, and behavior in world. I'm not sure what is driving it, but it is getting out of hand.

Since the time is drawing short and all, and even though I've never talked to you or Flip, I just wanted to thank you both for your efforts to make SL a better place. Sorry about all the crap that seems to have gone with it.

Yes, I witnessed the same thing in another game I played. We (meaning a small group of like minded individuals) finally decided to take our ball and go play somewhere else. That is precisely why I offer my services in these type of posts. I have been there. And I have found a system that has worked so far. I have nothing to gain fom getting new members but new friends. And that is a fact.
