Our group took the 'camping' theme literally, and created our own 'retirement' trailers. Our group has members that 'skew' the average avatar age upwards - yes..most of us are over 45!!
You are all welcome to our campsite - Roadkill space 046 - we've got free 'dependz' and a traveling internet cafe...and we've converted one of our portapotties into a 'jack shack' to accommodate those gents who have a few hours left on their viagra!

I just received notification that I won a lottery for land in BL08, via an e-mail that I will lose it as follows:
Pierce Kronos has offered you 'Reallocating the Land' in Second Life. Log in to accept or decline the offer. [19:34] Pierce Kronos: Hi, just a quick note to say that we do not feel you have fulfilled the requirements to be considered making a camp. We will reclaim the plot and return it to the pool to give someone else a chance within the next 24 hours from the time we send this message. You have until then to resume building or forfeit the plot. If you have any questions about this action please bring it up with the CORE team of Burning Life. [19:34] Pierce Kronos: 213 / lottery [PARCEL INFO] 1568 sq.m. / 0 out of 608 SLURL - Burning Life (Tigris) MATURE Liralyn Lyle
Upon receiving the message (via e-mail), I logged into SL, and slapped down my latest build, although it really doesn't fit the theme in the least bit. Lots of comments and questions.
Comments: I think this is a wonderful idea! I just wish I had been notified sooner that I won a piece of land via lottery. Although I do sincerely appreciate that I was notified that I am going to lose it, I wonder why I wasn't notified when I had won it?
Questions: I logged in, but did know what to do "accept or decline the offer", except to locate the property (which I could not do via information available to me in-game) and slap down something which is frankly garbage, given the theme.
I'm not sure what to do now. Did everyone who entered the lottery get some land? Is that why I wasn't notified? Is there anyone who would like this land if I surrender it? I would like the opportunity to build something in theme, but I'm not sure if I have the time to do so given the late notification, and the fact that usually, when I enter a lottery, I never win, so I hadn't given it much thought in case I did win. It eases disappointment, ya know?
So it's unlikely at this late date that I could come up with anything interesting, although I don't really want to give up, unless I'm precluding someone from participating who really wants to. If so, just post here, and I'll surrender the land.
If I can figure out how. grrr.

You'll find the SLURL to the plot there, too. I'm sure there are others who would take that land, even at this late date..

Well, I've decided I'd like to release the plot (213) to someone else. I replied to the e-mail I received saying so. There is no option in "About Land" to release it. If anyone knows of anything else I should do so that this land is available to someone else asap, please let me know.
Probably ought to notify them though - less than a week before the deadline, I doubt if anyone is checking the list anymore, just like me.

09-25-2008 12:40
This is very last minute for me, so please bear with me. I have not been involved in any of the BL08 stuff I need to know who to talk to about getting a stream set-up on a BL08 plot that a builder friend of mine asked me to hostess for him. The event is 9/27. I have the stream url but need to get it added some how to the plot for a DJ to stream for the event.
Please IM me in-world if possible! Thanks a million!

Trouble is this is not my parcel or my build. Simply creating and running an event for a friend, who has the parcel, we have a huge time zone difference. And, he just recently asked me to run the event...LOL...needless to say I have been running around frantically to get this organized...and, I know nothing about the whole Burning Life process. Crap happens when you get in on things at the last minute. Have found a kindly gentleman who has taken the information and said would process it for me. Again, Thanks! Happy Friday to all, and Merry Burning Life.

Main camp, scripts disabled ... I cant use my dance huds, and therefore this event holds no enjoyment for me.
No... I flat out refuse to use any dance machine set up by someone else. If I cannot use my own dances, forget it.
Party on Wayne.

Burning Life Lag - Its not all negative!!
09-28-2008 08:12
Hmmm....sure in the busiest spots ...it can get laggy....but why not try tp-ing to one of the less busy sims on the playa... There are 22 sims of the event and at any time, some of those only have a handful of people in them. The Hydro sim currently has around 10 people here and figures of: Sim FPS 45 Physics 44.7 and Time dilation of 0.99.... So come on down...there is loads of truly amazing builds in all of the sims. And for Phoenixa - there is an easy solution. Open up your dance hud at home, copy the dances into your inventory...Then when you are down on the playa...open up the dance animation you want...and click 'play in world' - works a treat and no scripts required So guys, sure sl does struggle a lil to cope with the literally hundreds of people wanting to enjoy this amazing event, not least cos all these awesomely creative builds come at a high cost on server resources even before any avatars tp in wearing their wonderfully primmy outfits....but it is holding up pretty well...and with a lil tolerance and adaptability....everybody should get a chance to enjoy BL. Have a great burn everyone! .......unless of course you just enjoy complaining...in which case....its a free world...enjoy

Do check out 25 or 6 to 4 and perhaps that will provide a bit of enlightenment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Exf2B9QeDEE Believe me, there is an easier and safer way one who wishes to dance there could do a workaround (since obviously, you know nothing about JIRA 6110). That would be to edit the hud while it REMAINS on the screen, CONTENTS tab, double click out several dances and then sit there working too darn hard. No thanks. Enjoy your party, there's certainly less laggier and more enjoyable places to dance than at BL.

ignorant and found out!
09-28-2008 13:03
Yes Phoenixa, you are absolutely right on two counts: 1) I am know nothing about JIRA 6110 - I am a very amateur builder/scripter and 2) there are many, many less laggier places to dance than BL I hope you have great fun going to those places to dance your dances that I am sure are very sophisticated and pleasing to your audience. I know almost nothing about dance myself, being quite content to look silly with standard sl dances & just have fun, but a friend of mine who dances as a career would have me believe that dancing IS hard work. I was simply trying to offer a helpful solution for you to participate in BL because I was under the impression that was why you were posting here... I am sorry if my suggestion wasn't any use to you. Good luck and enjoy

I hope you got a chance to see that video. If so, you saw that it isn't the same method of "dance" that others in SL do.
To me, dance is about joy, (be that virtual or real world), and as long as you're enjoying whatever dance you're doing, there's nothing silly about it.
They have their reasons to have scripts disabled there, and I have my reasons to refuse to dance under those conditions.
My choice in where to dance has nothing to do with sophistication. It has a lot to do with low lag as well as scripts enabled. Otherwise, my front full twisting layout stepout flip doesn't get off the ground. That and several others moves, flips, flydances, leaps and twists that I've created myself.
It would be like telling an artist to create a picture, but gluing the paintbox closed and handing them a safety pin to scratch on the paper.
I'll visit friends' art exhibits there, look around and that's about it.

Burning Fire of Life
09-29-2008 01:00
As the initiator of The ChangHigh Trinity Sisters Fireshow of Light, Life and Love and as the core performer of this years opening act "The Burning Woman" at the BL center camp and with due respect to all the many people who for months have been working to create this BL community with art, culture and free expression from the human nature I do like to drop a bitter portion into the glass of enlightment, joy and goodness of it all.
My words are few..but here they are in 2 steps:
1: The stage was made without any consideration for performers besides musicians. 2: Due to miscalculation (Dusty Lindens words) of prim amount, there cant be any fire at the Burning Camp center. All decorations of the tent and entrance which I sat up in full agreement with Talia and Dusty (they were present) had to be removed Sunday again. So now we got a Burning Center Camp without any fire...what a joke.
My solution Instead of using the BL center camp to musicians & Dj playing (without any real shows, besides "one simple rocking animation" ) lets create the BL Center Camp to real live SL show, all kinds of creative art performances. Create a good looking round stage, which can be decorate with fire torches and other particle stuff and emitters and WHERE PRIM COUNTS are not a problem. (Give the DJ and the musicians their own place somewhere else.) BUT...... Give the people of Second Life a real super living live performance stage where we can express our Art of Fire and our Light of Love to both First & Second Life citizens and where noone tell us...."you cant do this or that" (Respect PG mature) And create the full round stage solely on one round sim and adjust the additional 4 other sims around it.Dedicate one simulator alone to this Stage sim so we, the performers can pull maximum power without any delay or lag from the present audience. And tell people "to be able to achieve maximum viewer visibility you will need a fast running graphic card, like Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX or 280 GTX or any similar". Make sure in your information that the performers on this stage use the most advanced and best tools available within SL, made by its best scripters and animators... We use the highest quality of what exist within SL so let us have a place to express and show it..... Burning Man and Burning Life is dedicated to the Art of Fire primary, so let us create the utmost best of what Second Life can bring into Light.
These words come from a little real life jester of the mercy of The Most High, who for 28 years have roamed Scandinavia and Europe with circus. If anyone hear my voice in the dessert , feel free to IM me: Yman Juran or email: ChangHigh@mail.dk

Yman, knowing your wonderful show as I do, and seeing what you said here... it's a true shame what must have happened. So sad, that with all the hard work I imagine you and the glorious troup put into this, it sounds like your show couldn't unfold as it should.
I can say from experience to them, you missed out on something truly special.
In fact, as I read your post and tried to imagine what must have been happening, I'm thinking that many of the folks still think of dance as an "activity" as opposed to an "artform".
Truly a shame because it feels to me like discrimination in a place where we're to realize our imagination. They seem to support all the other arts.. photography, music, building etc.
To you in light, life and love as we work with our fellow serious dancers to change that.

burning lag
09-30-2008 14:02
as a musical performer at bl 2008, i find it ironic and perplexing that this linden sanctioned thing is the laggiest piece of crash filled molasses i've ever encountered, and that i wasn't even able to animate to strum my prim guitar whilst on stage.
shouldn't bl be a showcase for how cool sl is? not how laggy and lame it can be?
just curious...

All I will say is BL 2008 was nothing more than a showcase of what SL is after 8+ years of development. Take that as good or bad, your choice. From: someone Linden Lab was founded in 1999 by Philip Rosedale to create Second Life, a revolutionary new form of shared 3D entertainment.

Lag Fixes
10-02-2008 09:33
Yes, there can be a lag issue. My computer isn't the best there is, although I do have a pretty decent video card. While people are complaining about the lag I can't help but wonder if they're viewing at an optimal level. For instance it's easy to shorten the range of viewing down to 64 meters. Granted, it makes it harder to see some things until you're right on top of them but you'd be surprised how much lag that cuts out, and how well the things you do want to see and interact with work much better. An example - the Lamplighters. Last night I was honored again to lead the Lamplighter procession with the added bonus of Dusty Linden herself being present. Needless to say we drew quite a crowd (I led in the form of my dragon). We definately maxed out zones and ended up having to split into three groups...each heading into a different direction. I'm not saying I didn't get lag, but I really didn't have any trouble moving about, roaring, breathing smoke, and generally having a good time. I did find it a bit amusing when Dusty disappeared for a little while- apparently she crashed and we didn't for a change, lol! There are other settings - operating in windows mode takes processing power, as well as keeping the streaming media and the like on. Sure, everyone wants the full effect possible, but you really don't need a lot of the bells and whistles all the time. Given that Burning Life is one of the most popular events you have to treat it like you would any real life event - preparation is the key! This is my first BL ... and my first exposure to what I've only heard about via friends and family members who attend the RL Burning Man event...and I have to say I am VERY impressed! I'm sad that I'll be working Sunday the 5th and will be missing most of the closing events, but you can bet I'll be eagerly awaiting BL 2009!!!!

Last night was the first time I've been to Burning Life. I think this event is fabulous. The lag wasn't outrageous, and we saw quite a few breathtaking builds, some challenging conceptual art, a couple of very fun interactive builds, and of course some mainland-esque random puzzlements as well We'll be back. Question: how does one express appreciation for builds that we particularly love? It's great that the event is noncommercial, so no tips. But I do wish each plot had a "comments" box or link builtin, so that there was a common way to get appreciative words to artists. Reading each artists' profile to find their blog, register there, etc. is too tedious, and an IM or notecard seems likely to get lost. I do have to agree that performers are having a rough time, and next year LL should give some thought to a design that isolates performing spaces from the effects of random exhibitors' server load, and accomodates all forms of performing art. Overall though, I have to say, thank you Lindens for the 22 sims of bizarre fun! .

I've been enjoying my trips over there---some lag issues, but not too bad.
I'm wondering to what extent the word has gotten out about this to actual Burning Man attendees---is there something at the event itself that tells people that Second Life has its own version? I'd think that people who have already been there would have the deepest emotional response to the SL version.
(Of course BM attendees are probably split between those who are more prosperous than the average person, and those who decline to participate in Society, and thus are much LESS prosperous than the average person. And that last group wouldn't necessarily be online...)
((I apologize if this has aleady been discussed--I confess that I haven't yet read all of this thread---)) ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, October 15/16:
I'd like to register my protest at the wording of the Moderator Message below: as the moderator herself admitted, nothing in my post, above, has been edited. Nothing has been removed, and nothing has been changed.
The message carries a clear message that something HAD been removed or changed--a message that I had typed something hateful that had had to be removed.
This is a false claim.
Apparently the moderator feels that I was incorrect in my musings about the possibilities that attendees of Burning Man might have the opportunity to see and enjoy the SL version of the festival.
As my musings clearly convey, I think, I was speculating that many attendees are more prosperous than the average person on the globe (and I think that is a fairly easy thing to prove statistically---the median global income certainly wouldn't permit a trip, let alone one that requires the financial resources to be able to truck in and out all the necessities of life)---and thus those attendees probably do have monthly Internet-access bills that mean they could log into SL and enjoy Burning Life.
But many other attendees live less conventional lives. Not all Burning Man attendees live the 9-to-5 life. Some make their livings in ways that don't mean the white-picket-fence-and-monthly-Comcast bill, being musicians or artisans or such. And that would mean they might not get to enjoy Burning Life.
Enoying Burning Life was the gist and purpose of my post.
There is nothing in my post that demeans anyone, let alone demeans any people who've gone to Burning Man.
If the moderator disagrees with my musings---if she feels strongly that 'no, no BM attendee is more prosperous than the average person' or 'all BM attendees have monthly Internet-Access bills', then she might like to argue those points. It would be interesting to see what sort of arguments she might come up with to support those positions.
But I can't respect the idea that a moderator has the right to impose her own personal sociological opinions, to the extent that seems to be occurring here.
