Extending the "No Access" barrier over your land

Ceera's answer was correct, however I'd sincerely ask you to reconsider your choice to enable an access list. One of the worst things about living on the mainland is the artificial maze that residents create with their access lists. Even though most people are only on their mainland plots a few hours a week at most, those lines are up 24/7 inconveniencing everyone else in the sim.

If it's privacy you desire when you're on your land, I recommend getting a good security device, whose range is limited to your parcel, and only using it in a skybox (which is of course tucked away above the cloud line), never down on the ground.

If you find strangers on your sexgen one day, just ban those individuals. Just don't punish the rest of the grid for the wrongdoings of random ne'er-do-wells.

There is a difference between knowing someone can look inside your house and logging in to find someone screwing in it. If you have nothing better to do than to stand somewhere and scan your view into someones house then you have more issues than they do with you looking. Sounds like some lonesome soul who has nothing better to do than watch other avs move around, since they more than likely cant see the text. How fun is that? Joy!

What amazes me is peoples objection to others not wanting them on their property. It is their property and if they dont want anyone but a select few to be welcome, then that is their choice. There are plenty of places that welcome everyone, go there instead of complaining about not being able to go into someone elses home or land.

The only valid objection I see is that it can make flying difficult, which it does. There really is no solution other than only flying on protected land roads or waterways. That isnt going to change as people will always want to be able to block out unwanteds.

First of all. In RL I would agree fully with you, but not in SL.

And I mean "screwing" in SL? "hopping on poseballs"? Just eye candy nothing more.

Then... it may sound hard... you have no property in SL. Some lawsuits in other online "games" made very clear that subscribers don't own the pixels on their screen and cannot make any claim on them.

Then.. if you want to throw ban-lines up sky high (if you could), be my quest. If I would fly into by accident (and flying is a skill giving to us in SL) then it would make grumble about the owner and made me very clear I am not welcome there.
And as ban-lines just go to a certain height, I can fly over it. Nothing you can do about it... unless you use an agressive security orb.... then makes even more clear how unwelcome people are.

I've always wondered what is it that some people are trying to hide? Is it our virtual phalluses or other appendix? Or it could be that some of us engage in some perverted sadomasochist behavior that we MUST keep hidden. I just can't figure out why would anyone want to import his/her own pseudo-puritanic psychosis into SL. Why seek solitude in a world so full of posibilites as SL? Any ideas?

I would think because this is a digital community. Some times people like the feeling of privacy for one reason or another. Note that privacy does not mean solitude, it simply means you have a place you can go where you can limit who is around, not unlike having your own home IRL. There may also be occassion where some one would like to discuss something rather personal with a selected individual or group, and may not feel comfortable doing so in a public area. That may seem a little strange in a digital environment but I have seen it before, it's a virtual personal space thing, people sometimes do not like to be around strangers while disgussing personal problems. I am this way to.

Though I am new and have not yet felt the need for a "Private Place", my reasons for having one in the future would be to have a place where I could have a serious private discussion with some one without a lot of destractions. I am Dysgraphic, not to be confused with Dyslexic although a large portion of Dyslexic people are diagnosed with Dysgraphia as well. Okay back to the point, this is a reading and writing disablity, so lots of distractions can lead to misunderstandings (Misread/typed words) and very slow responces on my part. Having a place to myself rather than a public area would allow me to limit those in my emediate facinity and not have to worry so much about others just passing through, and thusly limiting destractions.

I currently use the "access" list in About Land to limit access to my parcel. But it seems that people can still fly over the parcel if they're above 50m.

Is there any way to extend the "No Access" barrier from 50m up to 80m, or beyond?

While exploring other sims, I've seen "No Access" barries that extend up past 80m, and in some cases past 100m! But I can't figure out how to do that for my own land.
Faine,

I see that you have joined rather recently, so you may not be aware that ban lines do not provide you with any privacy. Anybody being located anywhere in the same region may watch what you are doing in our house; the camera view angle can move though walls without impediment.

The main effect of ban lines is that people passing by see these red "No Entry" lines which many consider ugly. Especially your neighbours won't like them.

If somebody drops in uninvited, you can always throw them out explicitly; no point in creating a nuisance for everybody.

So ... are you really sure that you need the ban lines?

While true - People do want privacy.

Its an interesting problem since many are happy there is no privacy, while a great many others are not.

Ban Lines are often used as an explaination that its all the privacy your going to get. As long as thats the approach a lot of people are going to use them.

I don't want to come home finding people screwing in my bed. Why haven't sex bed makers built some kind of lock to stop this from happening? Less beds being hijacked would possibly result in less ban lines being made.
This may be a naive question, but ... given that there is neither wear & tear nor stains in SL ... why?

There is a couple ... a young lady and a big red ogre ... who every other day visit the main hall of my castle to sc**w the royal h**ll out of each other ... so what?

Why should I care? If they enjoy the ambiance, why not?

Am I really sure I need ban lines?? With all do respect have you ever been griefed by an abusive Neo-Nazi just because your partner has a Jewish surname in SL?
Have you ever been home invaded by a bunch of newbie thugs?
Yeah I have ban lines. And some particularly nasty "orbiters" and other hardware for the next *7^%%% who comes looking for trouble.

If somebody makes a nuisance of himself, by all means ban him. But why shouldn't I let, say, all the Chippewas enter my land if they haven't done anything to annoy me?

While the mental image is fantastic, ty lol, thats your choice and your option to not mind and allow them to enjoy your main hall. Others might not like it, thus...ban lines. I'm starting to be very glad the only thing I ever do in my house is work...there are just times when I am visiting a friend, or group of friends and dont feel like having some unknown pop in and interupt whatever 'mood' there is. Not just from sex (which, seriously, has no appeal to me in this world when RL is...well, nvm lol), good lord some of you people can only focus on the act of gettin down and dirty, people DO other things in their homes. If they would like to pretend there is such a thing as privacy in the game, then let em!! Geezaloo you would think they were asking everyone else to log off and stop enjoyin the game

Then you are using the wrong means... when it comes down to discrimination as you described, there is only one way to go... AR to Linden. And I am pretty sure that they will act (and I know they will because of a situation alike I was witness of)

This is why we have explicit ban lists. And abuse reports.

Alot of this is person preference as well. I am a retread been here before. I've dealt witht he mainland living situation, and got off of it as soon as I could. Total solitude is not possible but some privacy can be attained. Access lists are limited as we know. There are security orbs that work and work well.... IF time is taken to set the thing up correctly.

An additional step I took was to build a garden like area at ground lvl open to nearly anyone. And build my private space up high .. above 700m. I have nothing at that lvl bu the security orb to keep things private. It worked well.

At that lvl I was not bothered much... when it did happen sometimes it was just a fly by no problems there. Its when they stop turn around and comback this is where I have an issue.. and why my security was turned up high.. MAX push AFTER 30 seconds. In my view someone that stops and comes back and then hangs around is up to nothing good. Im sorry I do not think that they are 'Just out to meet people' not at 724 meters above the ground. I use the push setting instead of the TP home... because I think the TP home won't help em learn anything. Being smacked in the head and flying thru several sims.... This is something that stick.

Have I been reported? Ya.. .and when I show the log of them flying thru... then the same name person coming back.. one or more times. They end up with the warning.. not me.

Ofcourse we reported the person to Linden. Yes he was dealt with. So were the griefing objects he left. BUT because of that I allow NO ONE near my property. So sorry, I just dont believe we are all "lovey-dovey" here anymore. My house was always open - I welcomed newbies and anyone else and allowed them to use my place to change and restore themselves. Now - all different. Thank God for ban lines. Unless you are my immediate SL family you are banned. BUT - I still have one house which I keep open for strangers. I just wont tell you where it is ... lol

Yeah Sorry Morwen - See how much you trust a stranger after the kind of incident my family went through - Linden dealt with it very quickly (banning within minutes since the abuse was inflammatory and evil) BUT I just dont feel like another ruined Sunday evening with me trying to calm down one of my partners (an elderly man) who was upset and obviously shaking from the abuse and threats of this avitar.

Because private property is private property. The only way to get some to respect that it is private property is with ban lines. Nothing puritanical about it.

Because some things are private and some are public. Those which are private should be respected.

90% or more of the time I spend in SL has nothing to do with sex. But the other 10% I cherish, when I actually have a chance to spend a brief, special time with my SL loved ones. Think how crushing it would be for you if you only got to go out on a date once a month, and that one occasion was interrupted by some griefer type. It doesn't matter if he gets his stupid day-old alt banned. He still ruined my only special night that month! Even if it is merely an innocent neighbor who walks in unannounced, the night is still ruined, and the time can't be recaptured.

90% of the time when I am in SL, I am there to build, to create, and to shop and do other G-rated activities. At those times it is VERY likely that an 11 year old child might walk up behind me and get a good look at what is on my screen. As her parent, I would certainly not want that view to be something x-rated. So I take precautions to ensure that when I log in or while I am working in my workshop I don't suddenly get uninvited guests whose behavior might be highly inappropriate.

If some perv wants to stand 3 sims away and cam into my home, just to get his jollies, I couldn't care less. That makes no more difference to me than some teenager in Detroit surfing a porn site. I don't experience his presence, so as far as I am concerned, it does not exist. But my tolerance for allowing strangers free access to my bedroom in SL ended pretty abruptly when in mid RP I realized I had a griefer with a flamethrower standing at the foot of my bed, staring at what I was doing with my invited guest. Yes, I banned and ejected him. But I still found that incident VERY disturbing.

I only digress from Ceera on one point. I do care that someone can look into my house from 3 sims away using camera tricks. For me it is just a matter of principle. Can this be changed in the program without undue stress? Make walls solid so cameras or prims cant pass through them. Even as an option that can be turned on or off as the owner sees fit. I realize for building purposes , etc, the need to be able to movre about may nessecitate this. If thsi can't be done, so be it. I'll live with it and move along.

It is to the credit of Linden Lab that they've developed a product that is so convincingly real, that (far too) many people mistake it for "real life" and attribute the same characteristics...

...which I believe to be a fallacy.

I would ask this question: If you create a web page, do you expect that no one will mess with it / hack it / backdoor into it and at least look around? Or worse?

Personally, anything I put on the internet is something I ASSUME will be screwed around with.

Same with Second Life...isn't one of the goals of LL the desire to make the first usable 3d internet?

As the SL home page states prominently, and someone also said on another thread, SL does tout the opportunity to own virtual land, and the overhyped shill articles make great note of the few who have made fortunes in this business.

Certainly...as I too sweat real sweat for the money for my land as well...no argument on what you wish to do with your land...

I just have a difficult time with comparing an online construct to the "real world" - the same rules simply cannot apply.

Privacy is neither a right nor a privelege in SL (except for the few with the means to purchase and maintain a private island from which they can then ban all SL residents).

*add*
(perhaps I'm not looking at this as most folk - I don't consider SL to have any more permanence than a health-club membership.
I join, I purchase the privelege to use the equipment during operating hours, I must realize that I do not "own" any piece of the equipment...I can use it while there, and the club takes responsibility for keeping the equipment in proper working order. I interact with other members, but must realize they too have the same privelges and responsibilities as I.

But if that club goes out of business...I lose all the money I've put in - hopefully I've enjoyed the experience of using the club while it was operating. If I have made some friends and/or business relationships while there, and hence furthered my personal business influence, that is all bonus - the club neither guaranteed this, nor did they charge me extra for meeting other people.

This is a poor comparison, but all I have off the cuff...)

No. If I create a webpage that has a password protected members area or a folder with family pictures or, hell, ANY area that I don't want people on, I can expect that people won't look around and, in fact, I expect it to not be hacked. I understand that it might be hacked, but I EXPECT that it won't be.

You're right. However, the reasons someone wants to put banlines up are, quite frankly, none of our business. The reasons the want them is a moot point and doesn't really have any bearing on the discussion as putting up banlines IS a privilege in SL. And it can pretty much be considered a right until Linden Labs take it away.
It's not about privacy or whether someone whats to hop on a poseball and spank their friends or any of that.

To extend your metaphor, you can be assured that while using the piece of equipment, another regular member... not staff, not management, just another user just like you... cannot just walk up and start using it. You can also be assured that you can lock your locker and people can't just rifle through your stuff. That's what locks are for and that's what the banlines are, in this metaphor. The club is certainly within their rights to take away lockable lockers and members only have rights to those locks as long as the club has this policy, just like we as landowners have rights to banlines as long as LL has that policy.
