From: Ciaran Laval I asked Robin Linden whether the issue was online gambling, unregulated gambling or a combination of the two and she didn't know. I'm sure someone knows but I haven't seen an official comment yet. From what they've added to the policy, sploaders and anything else you pay for a chance win something, is now against their policy. I do wonder what Robin will say though. Sploaders are like mini-lotteries.

From: SqueezeOne Pow Oh god...read the whole thread before adding to it. You don't understand the ban and blaming the US for your gaming inconvenience isn't going to help matters. Oh come on, everyone likes to blame America now and this one they have a bit of a case. It used to be the Russians when I was a lad, my nan would sure as hell be blaming the Russians for the crap summer we've had if she were still alive.

I'm pretty sure sploders will be banned, initially at least, maybe when the dust settles they'll be back because yes technically they are gambling but some things aren't actually gambling ...I've confused myself now!

From: Darkness Anubis Folks I really think the point of this ban by LL has nothing to do with gambling. Its about money. Under the stupid law its illegal for companies like Visa and MasterCard to transfer money in and out via the internet. It's against PayPal policies as well.

If you're jonesin for some rigged slots you still have plenty of options you did two days ago! Again, read through the tread to understand what's actually going on.

The little guys tend to blame the big guy for their problems regardless of the actual situation. If the USSR won the Cold War then everything would be THEIR fault...only you couldn't talk about it...

A wise man once told me, "If you don't have a suggestion on how to fix the problem, then you are just B*tch*ng."
The problem is, someone will go to jail if they allow this to continue as is.
I don't think blaming America will fix it.
And just to throw it out there, I do not agree with it either.

Look everyone, one doesnt need an official explanation, at least I don't. It's obvious to me that the reason is because LL sees the legal implications of going up against the so called "legal" gambling establishments (RL casinos and state lotteries). They're a big powerful force, and quash any competition quickly and firmly. LL see's the writing on the wall, and realize they don't want to deal with the legal battles that they'd obviously loose. They didn't create SL for gambling, so they're just cutting it out now to save alot of money fighting lawsuits down the road. They'd much rather deal with a handful of bitching residents than deal with RL law suits. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Get over it.

I'm guessing I was one of the few who actually realized the entire time it was illegal and was just not being addressed. I dont think LL ever condoned gambling (ever see a LL casino?), but they sure didn't enforce that rule. But the rule only exists because of the law so LL is not the one to blame.
The Casino owners who knew the law at all knew they were breaking the law. I think it was pretty simple for most people to figure out they were not licensed in any way and paid no taxes. What about that seems legal? Oh yeah! It's second life where for some reason people think we live in international waters and can break laws freely.
But sigh... Just another way for America's over reaching grip to effect non-Americans yet again.
But everyone acts like this is a new law when it is not. It just they are being forced to enforce it.
How does their accountant claim the earnings from gambling? Just throw it all under Misc? They have to ban it to stop earning profits from it. Else they are breaking the law.
I hope this leads to more innovation in world. I'm tired of seeing casinos and slots everywhere. That is the lazy mans way to earn money.

Sorry but if we follow this logic, all businesses in Second Life are operating illegally. I don't charge my customers VAT when they buy clothing from me, if I had an online virtual shop I'd have to do that though, so yes, Second Life is a bit different.

From: DJQuad Radio It's against PayPal policies as well. i've allways wondered why paypal allowed secondlife to use them, paypal clearly states they do not allow adult items / pron to be paid for with there site. SL has alot of adult items in it that are paid for with money transfered from paypal. ever notice on SlExchange.com when you enter /mature/ mode you no longer are able to access paypal functions, and have to log back into /not mature/ mode to use paypal? how has SL gotten away with using paypal for so long?

They should have figured this stuff out back when casinos started being popular and numerous instead of waiting until they had publicity for such a thing. But yeah, it's not a new law, they're just starting to pay attention to it now. From: shiney Sprocket But sigh... Just another way for America's over reaching grip to effect non-Americans yet again.
Come on now! Is it hip to think US bashing is played out yet? Or did I miss that and it's retro already? From: shiney Sprocket I hope this leads to more innovation in world. I'm tired of seeing casinos and slots everywhere. That is the lazy mans way to earn money.
I agree with that. At very least I hope it will piss a lot of people off so they'll leave and make some more server room for the rest of us!

While I appreciate that Ginsu hasn't given her the answer yet, it's BULLSHIT that there isn't an answer for THE most prominent games in SL.

Again, read through the tread to understand what's actually going on. Well.... this came about because of some law in the US, has it not? So… a local law changes things for those who live on the other side of the planet… look, if things contravene it, why not set up a dedicated grid for the US… one could make it as puritanical as humanly possible… heck.. one could even go as far as to require a prayer at loggin… the extent of my gambling doesn’t go farther than playing the sploder when I’m with my friends… it is a matter of principle. I quote: Welcome to Second Life. We are a global community working together to build a new online space for creativity, collaboration, commerce, and entertainment. We strive to bridge cultures and welcome diversity. We believe in free expression, compassion and tolerance as the foundation for community in this new world. How can one do that if the only the American views carry weight? What is next on the ban list?

I wasn't bashing the USA. I like the USA. However, I don't like when US laws that don't exist where I live, have effect on me. Don't confuse simple commentary that is likely shared by almost every non-american with bashing. What's next, banning gay second life marrages? just kidding... "I agree with that. At very least I hope it will piss a lot of people off so they'll leave and make some more server room for the rest of us!" At most I couldn't see even 1% of the population leaving because of gambling being banned. I've played and run them in world, but I'm not sad to see them go. For the most part you will only lose money and these days most of the slots being played were to activate or increase the value on camping chairs.

How can one do that if the only the American views carry weight? What is next on the ban list? Make your own then! It's not their fault they thought of it and implemented it before any EU guys did. They can't help that they're subject to US laws as a US company...just like Germans can't help it if they're not allowed to have a differring opinion on certain subjects because of 70 year old country-wide guilt. The difference is...this is over a game. No one expresses themselves through poker. I've never heard of interpretive BlackJack! If not being allowed to gamble on SL qualifies of an infringement on your personal freedoms then you might want to put your life in perspective and visit a 3rd world country. Part of bridging cultures and fostering diversity is understanding what people of other countries have as realities in their cultures.

Lol… and the natural progression to that would be: … And perhaps the gays will go too... and the Pagans… and the Arabs… and these who think differently ( it is unpatriotic to do that…) …

If you knew shit about what you were talking about you wouldn't be making such ridiculous and offensive implications. LL may have several inept employees but you can't legitimately accuse them of even thinking to do such things. Go to San Fransisco sometime, then think about what you're saying...for once. What kind of idiot thinks that GOP dead white men are running a small-time company that provides a new and innovative kind of service that no one else has?? Get a clue, Green.
