Actually, I think there'd be a pretty good case. The trading standards laws are pretty tight on misleading statements, even if they are subsequently contradicted in "small print" further down in the contract...for instance;

"BRAND NEW TVR ONLY $100"

























(plus one time registration fee of $100,000)

WOULD be upheld as a misleading advertisement.

A couple of thoughts -

There is a difference between maturity and outright vulgarity.

I'm also a bit surprised that this is even a topic of discussion. The Community Standards have been in place for a long time. How is it that you are suddenly taken by surprise when a Linden spots your obviously vulgar and inappropriate group name, and advises you that it needs to be changed? Had you not taken the time, back in January when you signed up, to read and understand the rules of the platform before you began developing your business around this... as you put it.. "skanky" concept?

I think in general, there is room for the sex scene in Second Life, but just like in the real world, a little discretion goes a long way. A public facing group name like the one in question reveals a complete lack of discretion, and utter contempt for the decency that the Community Standards are designed, in part, to encourage.

While I agree with most of what Jake said, it is just not true that "people cannot do these sort of things in RL."

Because, afterall, much of the sexual activity that takes place in SL does exist and is practiced in RL... zoofilia, snuff and even Dolcett can be found to some extent (think Jeffrey Dahmer). So, the only retraints holding anyone back are self and societally imposed. And in the cases above, for good reason. But, edge play is practiced and enjoyed in RL as it is in SL.

Me thinks many more people are fascinated by a good edge play fantasy than they care to admit.

Well first of all, we are not talking abaout our rights as citizens, we are talking about our rights as members of SL, we are free to suggest to LL that we want the right to free speech to important to thier corporate culture, and we are free to debate what sort of society we want to have. LL of course does not have to gurantee such rights, and our only recourse is to leave. I think though, its more practical to think that an online compnay would find it good sense to pay attention to how they regulate the activities and conduct of citizens in a virtual world. Its very important to understand how these citizens feel.

Thus in debating rights, we are really debating what the policies and standards of our virtual world would be. After all if too many people leave, the business ends.


As far as names go, why not Skank Rags?
