It's only a waste of time if you get no satisfaction from it.

In a nutshell :)

I had some time off recently .. found myself in-world at different times to usual .. found the place unusually quiet (but damn! was it fast?!) ... kinda lost the plot a little .. explored a little .. went window shopping .. then realised where everyone was .. and came back to the forum ;)

You got it buddy. I bought a faudulent object once that drained my account (not much in there, thank God) and Linden Labs didn't care. SL exists to get money out of somebody, somehow. I thought the new Greenies Sim was adorable...then I found the magic Greenies Orb..tah dah!...It took me to a sim where I could purchase a Greenie avatar for $L900.00...big whoop! Yes, I have hung out and listened to real live bad folk singers I could hear in my real life town square, (OK, maybe small towns don't afford such RL opportunities) And I have had cyber sex with invisible men who probably look like John Wayne Gacy in RL, what a thrill, but over all, I'd have to say SL is vastly over rated, and basically a waste of time for anyone who truly values their life. Yup, get out now before you waste any more time. IT DOESN'T GET BETTER. There is no secret. No magic orb, no better sim.

can i have your stiped, prim allotment and stuff.....?

I'm trying to join you. I've gone through the entire phonebook and not a single doctor is willing to put me into a coma and hook my brainwaves up to SL. Damn!

I love never having to bathe or go to the bathroom and still always looking fabulous. Who the hell needs RL!

Look under 'Matrix The Return'.

What does SL do for me?

To best appreciate that, I look at what it dosen't do.

I don't get brain dead watching hours and hours of trashy TV programmes, or sucked in by all those things that you never knew you needed.. like 20+ mobile phones, a time share... a remote controlled sun awning.. double glazing... 'wings'... Advertising for alcohol.. followed by a programme showing the painful deaths of alcohol abusers... extreme makover...

I don't get bored as SL is quite dynamic, even the borked times keeps you on your toes. I get the chance to laugh at some of the things I do, rather than a paid for comedian on the TV... I watch people grow and develop.. partake in social intercourse (no I don't do the other courses available).. meet with friends from all over the world... Share in their experiences (not some sit-com script full of cliche's).. I can eat and drink and not gain a pound.. I can shape a prim box, make it pretty and someone will buy it and say how creative I am... I can talk and relate to people of all ages without them making assumptions about what or who I should be and how I 'should act' as a man of my age... I can 'see places' that resemble RL places, that I can only dream of going to.... I can MUTE anyone who I don't like and never hear from them again :) ... I can drop a stranger a whole load of L$'s and make them feel like a King or Queen, even when its only 1 or 2$'s in RL...

I was checking it out...thought there had to be something to it...but, nope, haven't found anything here besides casual cyber relationships, some retail therapy, and the chance to play pretend for a few hours...but, perhaps you have found something else? And what would that be, pray tell?

I am going to answer this seriously. Heaven help me.

I've watched people who are shy or who lack confidence blossom RL as they've learned some new skills they never thought they'd have. I myself, whilst probably too confident a lot of the time, have learned stuff it would never have occurred to me to even try.

I've seen and been involved in creativity, people bringing to life a concept even if only for a short while.

I've seen people networking, sharing ideas and dreams and ideals. Inspiring each other.

If none of that was any use ... I have had a damned good laugh a lot of the time. I've learned things about myself.

I've also wondered why people hang about doing something they apparently think so little of that they have to slag it off on the Forums ...

True, true, true, Mon Cherry. I've met some delightful people in SL, just the time spent with them has been worth the price of admission. At the worst I spent some time and money that would have been spent on some other mindless entertainment.

This is true. If I drank a lot, if I smoked, if I toked, if I had to wear Prada, if I threw all my money away into gambling ...

But I don't, and I don't know the average age of people complaining but I sense it is young. Maybe if I was not lucky enough to have had an interesting life to date I might feel unfulfilled too.

The answer to those kids is probably to go out and earn their scars and smiles ... then come back when they've got something new to relate to people with ... and I mean that nicely even if it doesn't sound that way.

*edit* I was going to mention frittering money away but I know someone or another will want money fritters with their pie if I do. And where's MY damned pie?!

It's only a waste of time if you get no satisfaction from it.

By definition, does being paid money count as satisfaction?

HMMM well in my book it's compensation = being here at work RL is a waste of time, in that case. As is swatting trolls in Forums :) I don't get satisfaction from that, it's just something which needs doing from time to time.

(I've yet to have one turn up to debate with me in-world ... which I'd find very funny and therefore satisfying and not a waste of time!)

well, as much money as i do spend i dont spend nearly as much as rl hubby spends on 'gear'. $5000 guitar ever few months (and nearly all of them are identical), countless amps and recording equipment regularly purchased... the $ i spend on sl is a pittance.

LOL

£44.50 on Tiger Woods 2008, £40 on Stuntman ... last week was a slow week, just £40 on Bioshock and the download fee for Space Giraffe ... that's the domestic balance in our house but I can't moan when I spent £300 on land I guess :)

the first time i sent $600 inworld i got yelled at for 3 hours straight. it did no good to explain that the money was 'tied up' in land, not just pissed away never to seen again.
three weeks prior more than $3000 was spent on a 'vintage' guitar, but that was an investment  three weeks later $1300 was spent on a purple amp because it was 'limited edition'.
needless to say i havent told him about the land market tanking.

Ah, I see you're just not a connoisseur of guitars then....:D I wish I had bought that Ibanez Steve Vai Jem when I was sixteen, I could buy a house for it now....

Thankfully, my S.O. and I have decided to waste the same amount of money on land in SL so no one can complain. But he can't beat my wardrobe...

@Ava: EXACTLY that one...in green....I loved it so much I used the pyramid motif on the fret board for a school project (an LP sleeve design) at the time-ah, the 80s....
