I'm seriously considering it. I have only been on Sl for 4 months. But in that 4 months Sl has been in a screaming nose dive. Things have gotten steadily worse with no sine of being fixed. One of the sims I used to hang out at a lot, I now get daily; some times 2 or 3 times a day, notices that the sim is back up. My home sim has developed glitches, and lag that it never had before. I have given up on buying anything because I just can't rez and keep any of it. I can't seam to teleport without some glitch or another. There is a 50/50 chance that when I log in I will immediately stealth crash. When crossing a sim there is a very good chance I will lose one if not all of my attachments. Being a "free" member I am not entitled to any support; free, right it's costing be $16 a month to be a "free" member.
And now to add insult to injury they want me to verify my age with info I don't give on the internet. If my CC isn't good enough for age verification, then F... Sl and LL I'm gone.

I'm just sick of no fixes; well except for voice. And the Lindens screwing us around trying to cover their own arse. If your car is skipping, backfiring and not wanting to start, waxing it wont make it run better.

I'm seriously not thinking of leaving SL. Isn't it terrible when you can do something for NOTHING and enjoy what others pay to create, maintain and love to share with you?

I'll keep paying my pittance for what I am able to play with, thanks. And enjoy good times and bad with people who care.

Sorry but that's how it is. Meh. Less bandwidth taken up.

Well you cant blame people for wanting to leave over becoming second class Residents. (in the sense of being able to access all content) They may not wish to provide their information to a 3rd party source they dont feel they cant trust.

Cant really blame people for wanting to leave of reductions in performance - Sorry but everyday performance is worse than in 2005. People can take their rose colored glasses off. Sure in 2005 we couldnt handle anywhere near 40,000 Avatars online - so theres good reasons for the performance being less. But it doesnt change the fact that it is.

Cant really blame people for wanting to leave for a softer economy - More people online growing at a faster rate than growth of LindenX activity (USD spent on lindens) Obviously means a softer economy.

----------------------------------------------------------

But the Lindens felt they had to add Age verification - so you cant blame them on that one.

They feel they need Identity verification for whatever reason - thats harder to beleive but its what they want to have.

They felt they need the ability to display Identity verification information - I think its the wrong way to go - but I guess they have reasons.

They may - or may not be doing everything they can to improve performance (within their budget) Its hard to know if you arent at their budget meeting. The argument that their adding constant new features is a bad use of resources might have merit, but thats their call.

The economy softening isnt really their fault - theres too many factors out of their control to place the blame on them.

So I dont blame people for leaving, BUT I assume eventually things will work out.

Or they wont and someone will come along and scoop all these customers and market up with a better product.

Unless you are exaggerating, maybe check your own computer first.

* Clear cache, or completely remove all SL files and reinstall the application.
* Check if you computer complies to the system requirements: http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php
* From these forums I also learned that VBO (what ever that is) settings in he preferences on or off can make in difference. Also turning off the object-object occlusion setting in the debug menu seams to reduce lockups on some mac systems.

I do have some problems with SL too sometimes, but this is nothing like your experience (which sounds very bad).

Good luck,

Agree with Colette really. I've sold off lots of land (close to a sim's worth) and walked away before now, but never really *decided* to leave SL. I might not have come back, but I did. I just didn't bother logging in beacuse I chose to do other things instead. When I did login (generally after a few weeks to a month away each time), it was just to meet friends. I have a modest amount of land again now and login almost daily.

Difficult to judge whether performance is getting worse. It ebs and flows. I remember some horrendous times last year, and if downtime wasn't caused by scheduled WEEKLY updates, it was due to an end of week grid attack. Something we don't see much of now. I'm given to understand that SL's biggest low was during a November 2005 update, but your mileage may vary.

Yeah people who didnt experience SL performance before June of 2005 maybe missed soemthing.

Of course it was still buggy and erratic.

But wow did textures rezz nice and reliably lol

LOL wed never have survived at the current level of performance - we had no P2P teleporting.

You had a 100-1000 Meter flight ahead of you after every teleport.

Now be reasonable.

It's NEVER people's own computer. It's ALWAYS Linden Lab's fault.

As you feel you have joinned and SL has only just begun 'freefalling', all those alongside you in the same situation, but with nose bleeds, are those that have been in SL a lot longer and subsequently been falling longer... No revalation there then......

Leave SL? NOT
08-31-2007 06:55
Being in SL is a chance to build a digital world that has never existed before, and build it the way we want it. I have waited all my life for this and wouldn't leave for any reason.
I do expect the corporations and free accounts to loose interest as there is no quick return for their investments (money or time), but perhaps they will go a "slick" site like WOW where a prefabed world is presented to them. As for the rest of us, let's see what kind of new world we can build! (When the grid is up).

An old wives' tale surely? lol. I cannot imagine guaranteed texture rez for a second. A RL friend of mine just joined and it was so embarrassing having to explain that if he wiggled the bandwidth slider from left to right, the pictures on the vendors might rez .. and what do you know?

When I joined in May 2006 the problems didn't seem that bad, but I think you overlook a lot of bugs when you're new because it's so immersive and like nothing you've experienced before. I'd probably say different if I'd joined when _everybody_ wore Missing Image clothes, or the asset server, search and teleporting was b0rked.

I also remember being able to cross sim borders reliably more than 90% of the time. A bunch of us n00bs flew from Waterhead to Abbots (quite a jaunt) but I doubt we'd get past more than two sims thesedays without dropping through the floor, losing passengers, the vehicle or finding our shoes and hair sticking out of our arses.

I'd love to have been around before P2P teleporting though. I realise most of you were glad to see the back of it, but I like the idea of people being thrown together.. just for the social encounters that are enabled. I bet lots of friendships wouldn't exist if it wasn't for that system back then.

I've been in SL since February. Apart from a glitch here and there I'm fine. And where does it say Premium costs $16??? have I missed something? And basic accounts do get help. Maybe try actually checking out the help portal. I won't even mention JIRA if you happen upon real bugs, because it involves RTFM....

Much info is documented on the web site, but IMHO, it's haphazardly spread all over the place, and difficult to locate. Some pages take multiple readings to try to understand what it's really saying. It has taken me a lot of time and dedication to pull together enough information to get the answers to various questions I've had. And they've been fairly basic newbie questions, at that.

Don't get me wrong: the info is out there - it's just that it could be organized a whole lot better, and some of it is frankly trash desparately needing a rewrite.

Basic members do also get help, but in my case, it took 5+ days to get a response. Which is what they said it would be. But that can be a long 5 days when you have an issue bothering you.

But to the OP, you can do quite a bit for free, and a whole bunch more for a few US dollars. But it can be frustrating, and it's certainly not for everyone. Those crashes you are experiencing really do sound like a problem on your end. Have you done CPU and memory checks on you machine lately? Check the drivers, etc etc.

Love.

I think SL is just like anything in life. You have to take the good with the bad. If the bad outweighs the good, then it's time to leave. Personally I like it, even with all it's faults.

Thinking of Leaving RL
08-31-2007 08:44
I've had it with RL. I'm thinking of moving into SL permanently. The script that runs my car won't always work, and I can't seem to teleport at all. I spend hours each day lagging at work - just sitting there staring at a computer screen like an idiot. I tried to change my shape, but it was an immense amount of work and I still look a little Ruth-ish. I can't get my hair to change, although it seldom attaches itself to my butt. My weekly stipend is too small. Every night I crash for a solid 6 hours.

Check this out! Last week, one of the prims under my kitchen sink unjoined itself and quit working. There was water everywhere. I tried ctrl-J, I tried realligning it, checked to see if it was some sort of malicious script. Finnally, I had to buy another one and crawl under there with a wrench!! On the way to the hardware store in my glitchy car, I drove through downtown - you know what that place it like! Griefers and newbs begging for Lindens.

RL is a pain in the butt. I'm seriously thinking about quitting and just sticking to SL.

Just to derail this thread .. something I haven't done for .. ooh .. nearly four hours now! ...

my fiancee is in an area that was hit by floods and water supply disruption recently. In the aftermath of the clearing up and cost counting there are appearing stories of people who met in the queues for drinking water. Friendships and romances flowering from what is now being called 'The Year of the Bowser'

Kinda cool I think .. sort of restores some faith in humankind.

Of course, I remember the bug a while back that if there was an SL inland water shortage, one simply clicked World/Region ... where the hells the fun in that? ;)
