From: Broccoli Curry I can't use voice most of the time simply due to the computer being in the living room, and other family members don't mind me tap-tap-tap in the corner whilst they're watching TV or something else, but don't want to hear me talking over it.
I'm fairly sure I'm not alone in this... and "move the PC to another room" isn't an option, neither is buying a laptop so I can sit in the garden and annoy the neighbours instead.
Broccoli This is also my problem. I live in a small apartment right now, and if I talk I will disturb my family. I get enough grief about the time I spend in SL, I don't need anymore over talking all the time.. And I am quite sure I am going to take a lot of grief over being female and not having voice on... With the "If you don't have voice on you must be male!" mentality.. To make matters worse back when I had a "computer room" I used voice in WOW, it was a nightmare. Aparently my voice is deemed "sexy", and I was constantly being hit upon.. I have dreaded voice for some time, not only over this issue, but I hated what happened in my WOW guild when they moved to voice.. Hearing our big main tank talking with a thin whiny voice, and so many other voices not matching their AV at all.. It just ruined the experiance for me.. The role-playing pretty much stopped, and everyone just started chatting about RL things.. Sitting in a dungeon and listening to people talk about the latest movie, or football teams.. Well it just destroyed the experiance.

I like having voice, I remember trying it out on the beta grid and just giggling all the way through... it brought home that there are real people out there! The only thing I can see as a problem is having something chucked at me in RL ... the "tap tap tapping" of the keyboard sometimes is bad enough! So I may be limited in when I can actually talk!

From: Michael Bigwig Just for the record, both sides of the fence harbors condescending, patronizing, negative people. I'm very much trying to change my attitude, I hope you decide to as well. (YOU as in the collective you) What, you don't think his post was condescending? What on earth is the collective me? And as for changing your attitude you have so far been remarkably unsuccessful. You consistently ignore the crux of people's posts and you consistently deny that anybody who happens to disagree with you has the right to have legitimate concerns about the introduction of voice and, most importantly, with the fact that we are being forced to use a communications interface which is less effective and less user-friendly that the existing interface. You call yourself a thinker, but display very little ability in that respect (not unusual among self-proclaimed thinkers, or self-proclaimed anything for that matter). Again consistently, you ignore the fact that most people posting in these threads have no objection to the launch of voice per se, but do object to the fact that while we have no intention of using voice - for various and legitimate reasons - we are about to be forced to use an interface that may be an improvement for voice users but is pretty hopeless for non-voice users. That is all. We are not anti-voice, but would like a little consideration from our linden overlords and a little less condescension and accusation from people like you. Or are we not allowed a voice in this as far as you are concerned? That is certainly how it seems to many of us. Apparently, you either love voice or you're a paranoid idiot. We like SL too. We just like other things than you. Is that allowed? You know, Your world, your imagination and all that. And please be a little less predictable than are you generally. Quite frankly, I'm pretty tired of being talked down to by people who have no right to do so. Think.

From: SqueezeOne Pow That would explain Project Open Letter. it at LEAST embarrassed them into a meeting, after drawing some real press attention. Normally, the Lindens in their techie superiority don't een deign to speak to us directly. For once, they HAD to step down from Nerdvana (and perhaps come down from the california high they seem to be on) and speak to mere mortals. Project open letter asked for too much, too fast, so I did not expect immediate response. But it DID force the lindens to grudgingly speak to us inworld and on the blog.

From: Colette Meiji That would be you and Brenda sorry couldnt resist. OK GODDAMNIT!! Next time in world, I am meeting with Chas taking a photo and proving once and for all we are 2 seperate people. 2nd. On watching TV: My computer is in a room with no radios or TV's, and I live alone anyway. But when I am watching TV it is always a program that I want to pay attention to, or else I wouldn't be watching. If I'm with someone I don't gab out of courtesy. If the phone rings I leave the room if the other person is watching TV. If I'm watching alone, I pause the program (I have a dvr) and finish the call.

From: Talarus Luan 5) The client goes out of its way to mark non-voicers with a "red dot", making it very easy to identify as well as stigmatize non-voice users. If it didn't put any insignia at all, that would be much more preferable.
*sigh* ... there's no "red dot" above residents who haven't enabled voice. There's simply "no dot". Kris.

They actually just had a meeting to get you guys to think they were paying attention then put out age verification or whatever else people have been moaning about and everyone forgot about it. Multiple posts and blogs is not "real press attention". Here's a joke for you kids... Q: How many angry SL residents does it take to change a light bulb? A: This communicate box is so hard to use!

When I started voice a few weeks ago, I positively hated the new Communicate window but over time I got used to it and now I'm quite happy with it. My only major complaint was that the public chat history window wasn't separate. Then they made it tear-offable and recently they made the tear-off persistent between logons. I'm sure many others won't get used to it but some of the current complainers (like I was) might well do given enough time Kris.

Anyone who cannot or won't use voice come talk to me, I will type.
I'm ok with using it around my close friends who know me in real life but I won't talk in public at all, not because I'm a man and my avatar is a woman, but because my avatar is 5 feet tall in SL and people think I am a kid avatar and when telemarketers call my house IRL they ask to "speak to your mommy or daddy" and I have to say "I am the mommy". So coupled with my short avatar (which is my height IRL) and the fact that I sound like Victoria Jackson- I'm a walking Abuse Report w/ all these crazy "OMG SHE IS UNDERAGE" or "OMGZ AGEPLAYERZ" and I won't risk my investments because other people are stupid and AR crazy. So come talk to me, I'm friendly.

Things i wouldnt have found out if voice wasnt in the equation. And worst of all now my Master constantly makes me voice with him in world. All he wants to do is voice and hit on me . . And hes talking to me like we are together in rl and i just heard him talk for the first time today. I feel like im talking to a stranger and hes saying i love you. it makes baby jesus weep. Everything is changing. Thanks alot Linden Labs for making my life about 500 times more difficult here Tell him your mic broke.

It's what you get for deciding to be someone's property. I don't think LL has much to do with that...

From: Michael Bigwig The forums are frequented by mainly those that love to bitch about issues...not embrace them-- I'm sorry Michael, I realize I am new here and that I am not some sophisticated techie artist SL resident like yourself. But let's look at what has transpired in the last week. 1) Client crashes left, right and center. 2) Inability to search. 3) Inability to TP. 4) Inability to load money. 5) Inability to conduct commerce. 6) Don't dare reez a "no copy" object on land you don't own cause you will lose it. 7) Unexplained lost objects from the inventory even if they have not been reezed. A new dorked out user interface that takes up 1/3 of my screen. 9) Severe lag where before I only experienced partial lag and only on very busy sims. But fret not ... I'm just some whinny bitch right. Let me tell you about this new feature. It's called voice. It's been rushed into production and is now available to the entire grid. Don't worry about all the challenges and potential abuse voice can be when surrounded by other opinionated avatars all speaking different languages with different accents (let alone the griefers). Apparently I can disable it on my land. But every time SL crashes on me, I discover it's been re-enabled once I log in and it keeps prompting me to enable my client (whatever happened to "don't ask me again" . There is talk that voice is free right now, but the Lindens plan on charging all sim owners who will in turn charge their land owners/renters. Then of course all the business owners will pass this added expense on to the residents of SL. Inflation without the protection of the watchful eye of an economist. You do know how economists control inflation in RL I hope. Or do you spend all your time in someone's basement playing SL? Finally, should I mention how all female avatars in SL are all of a sudden a target for harassment? They must be hidding something right? I read in the official SL guide that 18% of the female avatars are indeed male and a similar number of male avatars are female. So what about the other 82%? Oh they must still be hiding something right? They couldn't possibly be that hot 18-21 year old sex goddess far too many SL men lust for. Why is it that it is extremely rare for a fellow female avatar to ask me for personal information when we meet (we only give it when we feel we want to give it to our fellow SL girlfriends), yet a large percentage of male avatars instantly demand this personal info? Newsflash, men (not all) in this real world of ours have been keeping women down and trying to control us since the beginning of time. SL is no different than RL. I came to SL to get away from that crap. It started off being fun and it looked like a nice safe place for a woman to be. But lately it has not been fun and I am left wondering why am I here? Yes I am sorry Michael, how foolish of me. I should be embracing all the system failures and harassment I have been experiencing in SL lately. Not being able to do anything in SL only because the Lindens are in too much of a rush to force buggy features and poorly planned interfaces down people's throats is after all ... progress ... which we should embrace right? I believe that the long term future of SL (if SL even lasts) will include voice. But the future was forced upon everyone yesterday at a time when the platform is incredibly unstable. To you this is embracing progress. To me it is something else. Have a good weekend Michael. Part of me wants to log back into SL and continue the fun I was having prior to this week and the other part of me says, no go do something else and do it in the real world. Why should I subject myself to an unreliable system, or worse the potential harassment of some homophobic male who seems to think I would be interested in starting a RL relationship with him after 10 seconds of conversing on some virtual platform. You know, in RL I am not young and I am not old. In RL I am not fat and I am not ugly. But I am no where near as cute as my avatar. I tell this to the SL men I meet. Some of them are mature enough to understand what it means. Some aren't. If SL men want a RL relationship, get out there in the world and find it, because they are probably not going to find it here in SL.

I could have sworn it's been undergoing testing on both the beta grid and main grid for in excess of 6 months now. Perhaps it's just my imagination... Kris
