Never going to use voice, should that stop me from enjoying or participating in SL i'll be on my way out of the exit door, can't see why an online virtual world has to start implementing real life facets like using your real voice in chat...whats next a picture of yourself super imposed on your avatar?

I sort of hope you're being sarcastic, but if you're not, it is already possible to have your real life face superimposed on your avatar.
So what is next?

I'm fairly new here Chas and didn't realise you could do that! i might be missing the point here but isn't this supposed to be a second life not a cover of your first?

For some it is... for some it is not.... and some don't care.... That covers it I think :).

With all due respect, in RL we do have telephones, radios and so on. Would you ask to remove them?

You should have read around here that many users will NOT use voice, despite they are nor mute nor deaf.

I myself, I won't be using voice. Maybe SL will split into 2 communities so to speak, but I don't see deaf people being singled out.

And believe me, if someone doesn't want to type with you because you can't use voice, then it's not a person you would NOT want to talk or type to, to begin with.

Exactly. And eventually everything will settle down as it will. If the SL community becomes fractured over voice, there's not much anyone can do. If people cannot respect the choices of others, then as said above, those are individuals not worth associating with.

Being hysterical and knee-jerk reactive is not going to help anyone. Everyone has a choice. And I realize this will hinder some relationships (the lady whose Master wishes to use voice with her), well... perhaps it's an indicator to move on to another relationship. If there can be no respect between persons, then it's not a relationship worth pursuing (I know that sounds awful, but think about it).

There are thousands of people in SL. Making friends has never been a problem before and I don't see voice as being some kind of an axe to diminish one's friend base (a limiter in some senses perhaps).

Peace.

I was did spend a Christmas in a small town called Beckbury, which is not to far away from Birmingham. My plane landed in Birmingham. Anyway, it was an awesome Christmas.

But aye... she could have been from Birmingham.... or Amsterdam or Rotterdam!!!

If you want, yes...by all means put a picture of your RL face on your AV face. Having the option is a great thing, and people have yearned for that technology for years.

Ok, so you're "out the door" because they keep implementing RL facets? Wow. That's completely contradictory. Whether you want to believe it or not, SL has HUGE ties to the real world. Why do you think we construct buildings with doors, chairs with legs, and TVs to watch things on. Why do you think we have avitars with faces (most of us), pants we wear to conceal and warm. Why do we have a sun that sets, and a moon as well.

SL (albeit fantastical and unique) is part of RL. Just because we implement a new technology like voice (which is being implemented in ALL forms of digital entertainment), does not mean you should run away because your experience is going to be ruined.

I think something is drastically wrong if you fear voice this badly. You should really ask yourself why you fear it so much. And then ask yourself why you feel in necessary to slander is much, and wish it was never even an option.

I have to say one thing about people that complain about having their computer in the living room. You say, "well my family is there watching TV, I don't want to use voice and bother anyone." Are you telling me that you are not free to talk when someone is watching TV? You couldn't use the phone? People in your house don't talk to each other while they watch television? Other than specific sensitive situations, I don't see why people are so scared to vocalize in front of family. People talk ALL the time when the TV is being watched...why stop now?

Why do we have a sun that sets, and a moon as well. These things comfort us...and although there is a healthy dose of fantasy, we also like to feel grounded.

Quickly about the deaf community: you can't thwart technology for the hearing because the deaf community can't fully utilize or experience...that would be going against the natural ebb and flow of imagination, creation and development.

Why are people so worried about being judged or segregated because of their voice choice? I think you guys are being WAY too dramatic, really. This is ALL my opinion of course, but I will say (coming from the internal departments of game development houses) there are droves of people I've met that embrace voice.

If you're worried about the kinks...well, let them be worked out. I think SL has FAR too many advantages, to focus on the kinks.

In the end: you can never please everybody all the time.

Erm .... does anyone really think that voice would have stayed out of SL forever? It would have come eventually ... and rather sooner than later to be honest.

If LL had not implemented voice now other competing products would have and then LL would have been FORCED into enabling voice just to compete. I'd rather have LL pioneer a feature like this and be able to take the time to develop it properly than be forced and mess it up and cause more problems.

Voice WOULD have happened eventually .. whether people wanted it to or not. Time to just get used to it.
