Voice

I've posted before that I like voice. I've also posted before that I find it annoying in places. There was a blog post in the week linking to a SL promotion magazine whereby they skipped over the concerns of those who felt it would isolate them.

Every man and his dog has been telling them that the new communicate window is too big, too user unfriendly and tonight it's in the main viewer.

It's not optional, it's not an add on and as someone who has enjoyed voice in beta I'm pretty pissed off that it's just been forced upon the populace.

Thank you! While I believe long-term voice will be a negative and do damage to various communities (having been kicked out of MMO guilds for not being voice, I expect it to happen here), I do not begrudge those that want it. Since I won't be using it, I merely want my old, useable interface back so I can have the screen space and ease of use once again.

Heh, I'm not a voice afficianado at all, but frankly of the two, Voice and Chatterbox, I am 100x as annoyed at the chatter box, it's something I use every second of every day on SL and it's just been made much more annoying to get at all the functionality.

Some have joked that the chatterbox was nothing but a decoy to remove vitrol from being heaped n voice.. I mean... job well done!

How does voice effect us?
Is it voice users to voice users only, and typing to typing only?

Can typing only users understand the voice users?

Or do we end up being in 2 groups?

If you don't enable voice you get a red dot over your head, the stigma of the outcasts (maybe we should wear bagdes on the arms?!) Of course you can enable voice without attaching a microphone. Then you can hear them but cannot speak. Good luck explaining yourself to everyone why you don't talk. Probably you're hiding something or you're not really a 6 ft blonde, a steroided surfer or a blue dragon, you criminal! I hate it already. I just pray my fav hangouts won't have voice.

Red dot? Nah. It might mean the person had a connection problem or something--I haven't seen it.

Hope you joke about red dot.
Well do not want some of what is said in SL out over the loudspeakers.
Also not want what I "say" into SL said out loud by me in rl.


Another question to those that are using Voice, What do the voices sound like?
Is it the persons real voice like telphone, or is it an electronic voice?
I ask as we do not use our real names but wonder if it our real voice and thus giving possibility of being recognised, howerver remote.

Im deaf in RL I can't take part in voice no matter how much I want to Im stuck to typing and being typed to. along with the rest of the deaf community in SL.

I've been fighting Voice along with the other Deaf people form the start of it. We the deaf community in SL, have been neglected and left out of all the thoughts of LL. I fear the voice will change SL into a nother There.com. Being left out of 90% of the conversation since everyone in it was to lazy to type to me.

I loved SL how I was just like everyone else no limits on communication such as voice. everyone typed and I wasn't left out of conversations. Now what will this voice bring I really hope it doesn't destroy SL for people who can't use it, and those people who don't want it.

im already having conversations with friends ive made in sl regarding voice. Im learning things about people i didnt want to know. Things i wouldnt have found out if voice wasnt in the equation. And worst of all now my Master constantly makes me voice with him in world. All he wants to do is voice and hit on me . . And hes talking to me like we are together in rl and i just heard him talk for the first time today. I feel like im talking to a stranger and hes saying i love you. it makes baby jesus weep. Everything is changing. Thanks alot Linden Labs for making my life about 500 times more difficult here

There's actually a section on the effect of voice on people with various forms of disability in this month's newsletter (http://secondlife.com/newsletter/2007_07/awsi.html). They basically dismiss it as a valid concern since you can still type and be typed to while others who previously couldn't type can now speak, so it's a net gain in their eyes.

Feel for you guys really, and only use voice occassionally, but think it's good option to have when we do want it. If it's any conselation at least it' one voice, whereas in other games you have people in the room on skype, other on Ventrilo, others on Teamspeak and sometimes having to bounce between them all, other players then truely might as wel be playing in teams alone with no outside interaction.

My opinion is... Second Life is a platform we hope will carry on into the future. How many more years would you have honestly expected things to advance before the technology we used should improve?

This "technology" will bring a split into the SL community. I already was witness how in the welcome area a girl was fully attacked because she didn't had voice.

We will see this a lot more.

With all due respect, in RL we do have telephones, radios and so on. Would you ask to remove them?

You should have read around here that many users will NOT use voice, despite they are nor mute nor deaf.

I myself, I won't be using voice. Maybe SL will split into 2 communities so to speak, but I don't see deaf people being singled out.

And believe me, if someone doesn't want to type with you because you can't use voice, then it's not a person you would NOT want to talk or type to, to begin with.

I can't use voice most of the time simply due to the computer being in the living room, and other family members don't mind me tap-tap-tap in the corner whilst they're watching TV or something else, but don't want to hear me talking over it.

I'm fairly sure I'm not alone in this... and "move the PC to another room" isn't an option, neither is buying a laptop so I can sit in the garden and annoy the neighbours instead.

When my daughter was younger (she is 18 now), we had the computer in the livingroom for a reason. Maybe there are children around at your place for who the computer needs to be in the livingroom. But I can think of other reasons as well.
So yes, I am pretty sure you are not alone there...

Voice isnt an option.

Every time SL crashes, since the new SL download (and only upgrade option) that automatically contains voice restarts, that anoying screen pops up asking if i want to use voice as my preferance, and i have to click finish to get rid of it (with the automatically checked NO box!)
So why does it ask me every single time? Didnt it get the hint the first tiem I passed that setting??? And yes the setting is saved at bootup before logging in fully! But as Sl crashes so often under any conditions since it was installed, it should have saved by now!

I have totally shut down the computer and it isnt just stuck in ram, its in SLs bootup menu to repeat the same lame request! Will it stop if I actually click yes?

Do i really need a new backdoor access for ppl to access communicatins on my computer? NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!! & NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now im sure the FBI is happy to get more acces to ppls computers that are terrorists playing SL in their free time, but i doubt the terrorists are that fasist

And for ppl that say the new voice isnt going to effect your SL experience if you just turn it off! get real you dickheads! That server space could be better used to reduce packet loss caused during peak periods! Or more importantly free up support staff that now have yet another feature to waste time fixing!
Support takes forever to respond to the mass of tickets and comment attachnments just to get SLs typical lack of support service responces!
They either ignore the issues you ask them to look into. Ask you to do tests you have already given them attachment logs for or send you a message to log it in another system or format that they can understand!!!!!!!

So what format do monkeys on keyboards give resonable responses to? Ive yet to fathom that one.

How do they email you that they have discovered an accidental withdrawal against a Visa card that had its details removed from their system my accounts page before your account returned to non premier status? And how come they only discovered it aftyer you 1st saw it on your Visa statenmt ages after it happened and had already logged numerious messages for those thieving Bs to refund the money they illegally stole? Now as the card details wernt on the my accounts page for ages before it was withdrawn its hard for them to claim it was taken out by accident. AS to withdraw it they would have had to go back and possaably reactivate the account as premier and withdraw it!!

BUT most definately backtrack and find the old details in records to make the withdrawl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! remember it was listed as no longer premier at the end of the last mthly period!!!!!!!!!!

Like the massive tidal wave of other ppl before me, Dont add new features that make more problems to fix!

Just make the present platform more stable and add new servers to handle peak times that now run over 45,000 ppl online. It was just 39,000 a couple of mths ago! Despite more ppl leaving or just becomming inactive

Make sure to close SL before it crashes, once you have made adjustments to settings.

Day oh, its set during load/bootup!

Not some setting preferance made ingame, where you could get a message telling you that you need to reboot before the settings take effect!

Sounds like on skype - like a high level recording, better than a phone. I use skype a lot to talk to family and friends but I never talk to random people. It is much too intimate. It's like whispering into someones ear.



You can use voice altering software to try to change gender. They are not perfect though. Your accent will still be there as well.

I strongly oppose voice because it invades my privacy. Any woman av not using it will be subject to mean suspicions of being a guy. I am prepared to lose friendships over this. Or maybe I let my cat meow into the mic...

Well hook up with me (and many of my furry friends, most of us strongly oppose voice. In Lusk there will be no voice.) Deaf or not, I don´t care, for me you will be like everyone else.

hmmmm trying to come up with a slogan for my titler.......... i wear my red dot with pride, or........ you'll have to shout at me in chat

... or "Sorry, you'll have to insult me (or my hair) in chat"

Never going to use voice,should that stop me from enjoying or participating in SL i'll be on my way out of the exit door,can't see why an online virtual world has to start implementing real life facets like using your real voice in chat...whats next a picture of yourself super imposed on your avatar?
