No!!!!

ARghhhh!

I don't agree with you...even if it were little ol' me...it still would turn your fact to fiction...or opinion rather. Not everyone agrees with the voice dislike...can't you guys see that?

SHeesh.

You're trying to convince crack and meth heads that there aren't spiders crawling on them, Mike. You'll never win!

Give it time? Must be a new user. :) The ONLY way the lindens back down is if the community uproar here and in other forums is big enough and sustained enough. Otherwise, they blow off the community every time. You take the lindens at face value as reasonable. I have experience otherwise.....

Must be a new user? lol. Wow, way to be dead wrong.

Anyway. What I meant (you guys are so selective in your reading), was that kinks are going to be worked out. And if the general populous dislikes something dramatically, they tend to fix it, or change it. That's why there are PATCHES.

Give it time. If there is an evil conspiracy behind voice, to ruin text lovers and make money...fine, you can send me hate mail. But I don't think of voice that way...sorry.

I personally don't care if they've introduced voice. I won't be using it. I mainly play with my RL husband, and if I want to hear his voice, I only have to yell across the room. But I have noticed many pro-voicers claiming that if one doesn't use voice, one has something to hide. Nothing to hide here, just a small house with my computer in the main living area, and right beside my kids' bedrooms. My and my husband's typing doesn't keep them awake, but hearing multiple voices probably will. I'm inside sales in RL, so talk on the phone all day. I really, really don't want to talk on what is basically a telephone in microphone form all evening, too. Sorry, just don't want to. I'm all for new technology, doesn't mean I have to embrace and love every bit of it that comes along. Heck, sometimes I want to throw my cell phone out the window because I get tired of it ringing. But, Michael, you are one of the ones who seem to judge others who don't want voice as much as you do. I didn't download the new viewer, but it doesn't sound nice so I will resist downloading it until they make me. Whoever wants to use voice, by all means, use it and I wish you the best. But the first person who give me a hard time about not using it, will be AR'd faster than they can click their mic off!
They can pry my keyboard from my cold dead fingers, but they won't be prying a microphone from them anytime soon!

Why does Mike there have to be the only empathetic one? I get accused of the same thing when I express my opinions on voice...and I've never said "everyone should like voice"!

Who said he had to be the only empathetic one? If everyone starts being more empathetic, fantastic!

From: SqueezeOne Pow
The status quo glee club (maybe anti-glee club since they're always complaining about something!) likes to accuse those that disagree with them of being insensitive to the weak and all that. Funny how they do it in the most insensitive and apathetic ways!

I'm not neccessarily saying you do that, but the "in" crowd on the forum certainly does.

I don't know who the "in" crowd is, and I personally subscribe to Groucho's maxim that I wouldn't be a member of any club that would have me as a member. ;-)

Also, did I identify myself as pro-voice or pro-text? I did say to me voice doesn't matter either way.

From: SqueezeOne Pow
I believe his statement above is him getting frustrated with how people react to change on these forums. This whole "voice will fragment the community" crock is being manufactured by the very people that are afraid of being "discriminated against".

So the pro-texters should just remain silent? I'm not sure what you want them to do.

From: SqueezeOne Pow
It's like calling me a "racist cracker" because you're worried I'll discriminate against you for being another race before I have a chance to do ANYTHING!

This tired "fragmented community" argument was started before voice was even in the Beta Grid.

I don't know about that, I'm not part of the in crowd, whoever they are. But it seems to me that the fragmented community is a very real possible outcome. So how do we solve it and prevent it from occuring? Screaming at each other won't get us to a solution.

They have in the past when there is enough screaming and yelling. Rolling over and playing a brain-dead consumer that accepts what is offered gratefully accomplishes even less.

With all due respect, in RL we do have telephones, radios and so on. Would you ask to remove them?

You should have read around here that many users will NOT use voice, despite they are nor mute nor deaf.

I myself, I won't be using voice. Maybe SL will split into 2 communities so to speak, but I don't see deaf people being singled out.

And believe me, if someone doesn't want to type with you because you can't use voice, then it's not a person you would NOT want to talk or type to, to begin with.

I do not have a telephone (cell or other), no radio, etc.

I already saw how it can split into two communities when I was at an event and some people were using voice. I thought it odd that the normally talkative people weren't saying anything (by typing) . . . then I found out that they were, but in voice. So I tried voice to see if I could hear anything (could hear one, not the other) and they were nice about my not being able to communicate with them through voice, but I couldn't keep up with chat and voice. I was just paying attention to trying to hear the voice (and respond by typing) and split myself off from the others.

And yes, it did completely change things to attach a voice to a person I had previously known. :)

No sweetie...

I meant, there is something wrong if you fear it THAT much. Not if you just "don't want to use it." There is a difference...one I was hoping wouldn't fly over your head.

I'm not discriminating anyone for not using voice. And I'm not judging you if you don't want to use it...what I AM saying is...there is something wrong if you fear voice so much that you have to slander it to its death.
Read the original post you quoted in that reply again. He said: "should that stop me from enjoying or participating in SL i'll be on my way out of the exit door".

I fail to see anything about fear in there, nor anything outrageous. If someone finds they're not enjoying SL anymore, they shouldn't stick around just for the sake of it, whatever their personal reasons for feeling that way are.

As far as the added little bit about not bringing RL into SL is concerned, pretty much everyone has a threshold there, for some it's just lower than others. Some people will not do voice, others will not age verify when LL introduces it, others will not opt-in to the identity verification that will follow (published and verified RL name, country, etc).

Maybe you were reacting to another post, but the one you quoted wasn't slandering voice in my view, nor negative about it and bringing personal RL aspects into SL is something everyone should be free to decide, not mocked or judged.

There are thousands of people in SL. Making friends has never been a problem before and I don't see voice as being some kind of an axe to diminish one's friend base (a limiter in some senses perhaps).

Peace.

/me the socially limited one hides in the corner from the one who says that making friends has never been a problem before.

When it was largely me arguing with a few of the voice advocates - I was told I was paranoid and delusional.

When it was a handful of people - they are called the in-crowd.

And when its a lot of people who rarely ever post - they are somehow the forums community that doesnt reflect the real Second Life.

I find this sort of labelling interesting.

I wonder what the label will be for people who are new to the forums who complain.

As somebody who scripts a lot and talks little, I must say I'm starting to enjoy voice. I often have a script open so now I can full screen all that stuff, inventory, scripts, etc and actually pound otu some code while listening to my friends yammer on. If I felt like doing that sort of thing before I'd usually leave to my plot so I didn't seem rude missing all the text chat.

I also did a voice IM call with a friend last night and left it connected for a long time, it stayed functional between both of us teleporting around so despite being the only 2 people from a regular group that were on, we were able to bugger off and wander the grid w/o leaving eachother hanging (no different than IM really, but again hands free and somewhat less cumbersome).

So those are two small wins for voice on my end.

Oh and on a lighter note, I don't think any smiley will ever take the place of hearing the person on the other end laugh so hard coffee comes out their nose and they forget the mic is on and start swearing and shouting for paper towels lol.

It still is the "in-crowd" considering the ratio of people on the forum vs. people in-world. You still don't have a valid argument...but that never stopped you before!

I'm sorry my hearing problem and speaking problem isn't a valid argument to you. And please bring back the old chat/IM boxes. And separate out the Friend List again, while you (LL) are at it.

Oh, and please, stop telling people to "just try it". I did try it. Didn't mean I could suddenly hear better than I have before, nor that .. . . aw forget it.

Who the f#$% said that wasn't a valid argument? This is the type of bullshit I'm talking about when I call you people crazy, paranoid "victims" looking for things to not like in the world.

I haven't even talked to your ignorant ass before so I don't see why you're pointing this bullshit at me. ONCE AGAIN I will outline my take on this.

a) I like voice personally. I communicate better through talking than chatroom typing when in large groups. Like someone else posted, I also spend a lot of time in scripting and building mode and tend to miss conversation in chat because of it. Voice solves that for me. FOR ME.

b) It's optional and if you'd only go in with an open mind (a rare commodity on the forums) then there probably wouldn't be such a "fragmented community" that your frame of mind is most likely to cause if held by people on EITHER side of the issue.

c) If you don't want to use it for whatever reason that's fine. But don't try forcing other people to dislike it for your own reasons and getting condescending when they don't agree. This isn't church, kids.

I'm gonna have to take my own advise and realise that I'm trying to convince you emotional crack heads that there aren't any spiders crawling on you and that it's futile. You people will always find the negative aspect in ANYTHING...which is why you are here in the first place trying to convince yourselves and others that SL isn't a game.

Simple, I've read most of these voice threads and that always seems to be your response - just try it (or as it says in B -"It's optional and if you'd only go in with an open mind " which sounded like - try it; and I've already seen a fragmented community and ironically I was on the voice side of that fragmented community and I couldn't even talk on that side - was only paying attention to what the voicers were saying (the ones I could hear; beginning to think I can't hear male voices - the range a male voice typically falls in)).

I've never had anything worse than caffine in the form of drugs. When I see a spider on me, it is a real spider. I can ship you the bloody corpse if you wish.

You said "You still don't have a valid argument" - I took that "You" as plural - all of you that have said anything about voice. If you just meant Colette Meiji, then I am sorry I read it as a plural you. Still don't understand as I believe that Colette has made some valid arguments.

Actually I believe that we have talked at some point in the 4 or more months I've been on. I could be wrong.

I'm sorry that I caused you to explode. That was not my intention. I was just surprised by the "no valid argument" statement.

Again, I'm sorry.

"You" is not used plural when one is quoting and responding to someone in that post.

I think you just need to pay attention a little better. Don't worry, a lot of people here only read what they want to see. You're in good company!

Well *sigh* I feel better. I know the nonsense and flame-throwing continues on without me.

:)

Let us be completely honest here. The majority of us here that have a strong opinion, are NOT handling these debates in a diplomatic, unbias, open-minded way. Can we agree on this? (if you can’t agree with this statement at all, I fear we are at an impasse)

If you are with me so far, then please, let us change the way we communicate. No matter how “right” we think we are, the truth is, being negative about how we express this doesn’t help a gosh-darn thing.

We all have our opinions.

I do not—for one second—believe that voice is going to ruin Second Life. Let us look into the near future, and see all the voice bugs cleared out. Realize, no matter WHAT your gripe, you have to see that SL is far too expansive and amazing to focus on the bad. The reason you’re so passionate about it in the first place, is because LL has given us something beautiful to spend time with. So let’s have faith, and embrace change—a very important ability we all have, key to our survival.

Ok, peace…love…prosperity…

Bye.

*shrug*

I don't care if anyone else wants voice or not. My issues with it are:

1) LOTS of development time spent on new features while serious issues continue to languish.
2) Voice is not truly optional. I STILL will have to download the client with voice at some point if I ever want any more bugfixes or other updates. That client WILL prompt me to go through voice setup once it is installed and ran.
3) The Communicate UI mess is there even though I don't want voice. I now have to live with the bad UI design decisions that accompanied a feature I will never see any benefit from.
4) I've been in other online worlds in the past where voice became a divisive force. Those that didn't use voice chat got treated VERY poorly by those who used voice. It wasn't as simple as just "not associating with those jerks"; they were literally around every corner. Pretty much, any grief I get from ANYONE over not voicing with them means an instant mute/ignore, and potentially a ban. Yes, harassment is still harassment, but I plan on being very heavy handed over this particular kind of harassment.
5) The client goes out of its way to mark non-voicers with a "red dot", making it very easy to identify as well as stigmatize non-voice users. If it didn't put any insignia at all, that would be much more preferable.
6) Walking around in an area filled with voicers as a non-voicer, attempting to spark up a conversation, and getting completely ignored because people cop the attitude "If he wants to chat with us, he'll go voice, or he'll just have to go away".
7) Regardless of the fact that the voice traffic is not hosted on LL's servers, there IS extra overhead on the client to operate it, and as an embedded feature, if something about it gets Lindened up (count on it), I get to suffer the consequences for a useless part of the software I didn't want. Well, it's not like there aren't quite a few of those already, but I don't see the value in adding more load to an already broken wagon.

Bottom line, people are people, and will sink to the lowest common denominator in the vast majority of cases, be it due to sloth, avarice, greed, or just plain being hostile jerks. Voice brings it out in folks.
