From: Yiffy Yaffle I don't know why i have to explain this clearer. In the US, gambling has been illegal for some time, except for Vegas. Thats why people use cruise ships for it. Since Linden Lab is stationed in the US they have to avid by US laws. This is the only reason they are doing this to the grid. They don't want any trouble. Atlantic City? I'm just being pedantic!

Gambling is legal in many other places in the US. The reason people can gamble on cruise ships, river boats, etc is because it doesn't fall within US jurisdiction. And were mainly talking about gambling online, not within physical casinos.

And were mainly talking about gambling online, not within physical casinos. The problem here is it is online gambling, which falls under a federal law that needs to be fixed, IMO. These other gambling locales fall under state law - or are in Indian reservations, which are free to allow it in their areas - so it's state or local option.

I so pity them O.o I for one have no desire to make my SL a RL experience. I like being non-productive in a virtual way. Save my talent and productive time for RL money. Then I can afford to do as I please in SL or whatever.

I so pity them O.o LOL most people LOOSE gambling anyhow. ----------------------------------------------------- Looking at just wagering - the actual amount of money when you subtract Losses from winnings - as a net result of dropping gambling is Zero. The economic impact will come from people not buying Lindens so they can gamble. Thus their USD$ will not enter into the economy And from Casino owners no longer spending any money - Most of which was money they gained off losers anyway.

From: Sarah Nerd I agree with you here. As much as I'd liked to have seen them give a better warning. Something to the effect of all casino games must be removed within 2 months... I think this is just LL trying to follow the law and prevent losing SL altogether, and not them taking away rights "just because" like they did with first land and lowered stipends. Yes I truly think that a lot of people dont understand. The issue is not LL not liking gambling in the game they have a very hands off approach as can see in the laments about LL refusing to put a hand in just about anything else in SL. LL has lawyers who have if people read back on the blogs and in some cases a few news articles that describes LL asking the FBI to actualy login to SL and give them a verdict made a decision based on what information they had at hand. Again no rights are being taken away because of something only SL related they are clearly reacting to a real world problem/issue. We cant fault them for that. The only thing that should have been done is a warning been issued that in x days (60-90 days) all gambling will have to cease in SL. This would have given those who wished to convert a chance to decide what to convert to if they wanted to remain in SL in some capacity. On the other hand no matter how much warning is given about anything there will still be the same cries of injustice and whatnot at the end of the time period expiration. Anyhow this has nothing to do with SL related freedom it has to do with a real world related freedom that WE NEVER HAD only thought we had. When people started looking at second life as a business platform things started to change and Lindens were converted and put into the real world in a large enough quantity as USD to be noticed. Once one person started to declare SL earnings as income and paid taxes on them things like gamblins in sl no longer was for play money it became for real money. We can't deny that as much as we would like to so with the ability to spend and loose real money on a gambling device the laws that govern them go along with it as well. I guess well the removal of ads was a hint and me i removed the couple of slot machines etc I had lying around way back then not that I actually had a casino but i did have a poker table for people to spend money at and a couple of over things. They were removed with the first wave of trouble. Protesting this in front of LL offices is useless about the only thing you can protest is not the actual policy but the implementation of it and I didn't get a feeling that this is what was being protested by the signs i saw

From: Colette Meiji And from Casino owners no longer spending any money Yeah, I think that's really the question: how much of the gambling revenue stayed in-world and therefore had some impact on the economy, and how much of it was just a flow-thru of RL currency from the gambler to the casino owner? To the extent that the casino owners (or the few winning gamblers) cashed out their take, the economic impact of their departure is zilch. We know they spent some L$s on bling and builds and maybe scripting. Some employed a few folks with in-world L$s. (Of course, they also paid tier and advertising, but I think that's of no consequence to the in-world economy: the US$ tier goes to LL and the advertising L$s just vanish from the monetary supply... which maybe goes to LL, too, when Supply replaces it with freshly minted L$s for sale... not sure.) To gauge the impact, I think we'd need to know how much they really spent in-world.

It will take at least a month or two to see the impact of this. People making overnight claims are just peeing in the wind.

I would hope or suspect anyhow that some peopel will convert to some other form of gaming there are other things that can be done heck put up a church and build a bingo hall in the basement (that idea just popped into my head now lol) there are ways to do things even hold contests that are kosher etc. People have to put their thinking caps on a bit and user their imaginations and hopefully they will come up with some plans In any event its hard to know the effect on the economy. We can all speculate but there are a lot of things in sl that do well and have events and there is not even a sploder in sight. anyhow uh yeah so if anyone wants help building a church with a basement bingo hall umm well there is one idea and I likes to build err the bingo cards your on your own with though find a good scriptor and the dream will be realized *ponders using the idea himself later on in his sl existance*

well maybe but i was thinking of bingo as its legal and there is not "consideration" blah blah blah. I mean there are a million blue haired ladies that play bingo all over the US and Canada and I dont think there is much of a license behind it (err well maybe a bingo permit I remember having to get one once but it took me 2 seconds and no money and that was it or was it a booze permit... old age sucks )

Also, bingo has gone very high tech these days. In my area it is losing out to Indian Casinos. Maybe a tribe could purchase a sim, call it a reservation and fire up a casino.

Maybe a tribe could purchase a sim, call it a reservation and fire up a casino. A tribe couldnt becuase they cant set up Online gambling in the United States any different than anyone else in the US. The reason a Reservation can set up gambling on their land is the tribe has *supposedly* soverign authority over the reservation, and thus able to bypass the gambling restrictions in the state the Reservation is contained in/borders (depending on definition). They still are overseen by a gaming board though. Indian reservations are only soviergn when the US governement decides its okay, of course. Which is a pretty lousy definition of soviergn.

I don't gamble hate the bloody clot machines in clubs and don't believe it will be the end of SL as we know it
but American friends are very upset by it. I went looked and was bemused
Mind you if they placed a server in Europe - it would be legal as we are not so hypocritcal and tight assed over here. I mean isn't the US home of the Biggest Gambling industry on the planet? Reno, Vegas multiple indian reservations?
It's also the biggest producer of porn in the world and thats under attack in in SL too.

From: Chris Norse This protest is a clear example of "Let's you and him fight." These protesters won't face the penalties if the Feds decide to crack down on gambling in SL, it will be the Lindens facing fines and jail time. Maybe if they had something to lose by breaking the law I would take them seriously. Protesting when you are not at risk, isn't much of a protest. Actualy they would do a bit more than that, they would go after the people actualy runing the game in the first place which means going after the people who "own" the casinoes, and then going after the people who made the "virtual devices" even if they stoped playing the game a while back and thoes are long ago created clones.

Well
I discussed this with my director at work on Friday. I'd sent him a casual mail (my SL addiction is well known and well mocked at work ... meh).
He came over and was quite serious about it for a change - given that his entire career revolves around Compliance - and his view was that Fed involvement was game over for gambling.
So don't hold your breath, don't get too het up about getting round this ban. It is not gonna happen.
Make something FANTASTIC to look at instead, charge a cover for your amazing thing to be seen (sensible please), host events people will find thrilling ... create! create!
Face the music peeps ...

AND it relies on a random number generator to serve a result!!!!!!!!!! Am I alone in seeing all the games like that as relying on a random number generator?

I'm not sure about that, gambling in Europe is regulated, in Second Life it wasn't.
