Funny, I live in a rural area, I have water, sanitation, phone and power all of which were privately provided. Well in the UK Chris BT with ADSL and Cable providers have been criticised for not doing enough to provide services in rural areas. Public transport to such areas are only operated by private companies if they get a government subsidy, without that subsidy there would be no public transport to those areas and as for postal services, the rural and hard to get to routes, the private companies don't want to touch with a bargepole, leave that to the Post Office. "Public services" are just jobs programs for those who can't make it in the private sector. I've worked in both sectors and that's absolute hogwash, you get the same people in both sectors, they both whine about benefits the other gets. I'm sure The Police and Fire Services would be pleased to hear the disregard you have for their public duties. As for monopolies, I am all for getting rid of monopolies, the govenment sponsored ones. Lets scrap the special protections given AMA members, members of the various bar associations, the postal service. Face it Ciaran, government monopolies cause much more harm than any private corporation. Under the Standard Oil monopoly of the late 1800s, the price of kerosene dropped. The railroads only had monopolies because they were given special treatment by the government. The evil Robber Barons were a myth. You've lost me here I'll admit, I got lost at AMA. We're going a bit off topic, I'll happily debate this with you inworld though. |

well, actually the british soldiers werent really giving it their all. that war was very disenchanting for the redcoats.
Consent of the governed (right to vote) and the right of free speech (something most nations in the EU do not enjoy) are rights that preexist and in America were recognized because we kicked the King's men out of America. As for the other things you mention, the free market will supply all of them better than legislation will ever do. im thinking sl demonstrations/protests are forbidden. is this the case? |

Anyone fancy organising a counter-protest in support of the banning of gambling?

I'm not in game attending the protest, but I -did- downgrade from premium to basic today. I can't see throwing more money at a ship that LL seems determined to sink. I still rent land in game, and to be honest I dont frequent casinos (play devil may care now and then) but I have friends who basically have just had a years work flushed down the tiolets with no warning. Those of us up top can only keep bailing water so long with the axe-wielding 'mice' down in the hull chipping away before we finally have to give up and say its not worth it. Those who think that this ban isnt going to send far-reaching ripples through every sector of the game are just kidding themselves. Watch the value of the L very closely over the next few weeks; its already started a slow downhill slide on slx.

I've seen better protests for worse causes =/ Not much can beat 100's of naked dwarves in Ironforge's across the servers protesting the priest changes earlier this year in WoW. They at least had catchy slogans and videos with upbeat music.
Change will come. Sometimes protests will change things- but only when the company involved didn't really care much about the changes to begin with. This isn't one of those times. |

Well hello, that pic made my day......
Seriously. It was only a matter of time until the Lindens had to stop the gambling stuff. We all knew that from the day the US government declared online gambling illegal-so much for "no warning". |

... I have friends who basically have just had a years work flushed down the tiolets with no warning. I can't quite understand why they think they had no warning. To me it seems like it was obvious casinos were on shakey ground for a long time. That might not be as they saw it, though. Did they get some kind of assurances that this wouldn't happen? Over time things change a lot in SL, and occasionally a particular group (telehub landowners, etc.) gets hit hard with something that is changed for the good of the majority or for legal reasons. There's no way to avoid change in SL or RL. _____________________

I have friends who basically have just had a years work flushed down the tiolets with no warning. Actually, there WERE warning signs that casinos and gambling were on their way out. Thursday, April 5th, 2007 Linden Lab has decided that we will not accept any classified ads, place listings, or event listings that appear to relate to simulated casino activity. http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/04/05/advertising-policy-changes/ Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007 Classified ads for businesses in Second Life related to Casinos or other Gambling related activities will be removed by Linden Lab with no refunds given. Also, parcel descriptions which advertise the same activities will also be changed, as they fall under the same guidelines. http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/07/03/advertising-policy-and-classifieds/ Casino owners either chose to ignore the fact that LL was 'encouraging' them to stop their current activities, or they held on to vain hope that it would all blow over. A more subtle approach didn't work, so LL moved on to direct...as much as they're able, anyway. _____________________

She doesnt own a casino..she had a small platform for games like devil may care solo, tringo and a few others (magic orbs, that sort of thing). True, there were one or two slot machines, but the slots were never as used as the others were. I just think LL could have given people time to cash out..a warning of a week or so wouldnt have killed them..theres no way they were caught by surprise. Now people who have just paid tier or about to get billed are stuck with land they can't use, and equipment that is totally useless unless some Linden actually has the balls to step up and clarify whether those games are included under this blanket ban.

Well I was just there, Robin Linden came out and spoke, I'm starting to like Robin more than I like Sarah Nerd.
Anyway, she was a bit vague but said she'd find out more if she could about Slingo/Tringo/Zyngo. She said they couldn't delay the decision because then they'd be condoning illegal activity, I still think they should have done more there and should have banned it weeks ago. I then asked her whether the L$ has monetary value and everyone got confused as to whether it does or doesn't. It's a digital credit. |

Anyway, she was a bit vague but said she'd find out more if she could about Slingo/Tringo/Zyngo. It seems to me that, if it's OK for RL little old ladies to play Bingo in the church basement every week, SL's versions should be safe as well. But I guess you never know... _____________________
