Malia, I have this same problem with every social network site I'm on YouTube, Facebook, SL. In all those cases I don't want to be friends with people I don't know but I don't want to actually reject anyone either so on Face Book (a rl thing of mine) I just leave them all pending. In SL when I see them I press quit and when I log back in the request is gone. (?)

But for some reason on AU (probably because it's not obvious to me at this point that I'll care much one way or the other) I've been accepting every friend request I've gotten. From people who I already consider friends and people I don't think I've ever heard of. I guess I'll see what happens. If anything.

I've been asking myself those same questions. I logged into AU earlier today and was happy to find a friend request from you and Elora. The troubling part was that there were 17 other request from total strangers. I glanced at a few of their profiles and found no common ground at all. I assume they are just trying to pad their friend counts. I guess it is cool to say "Oh, look how many friends I have". If any of them had taken the time to included a note saying "You don't know me and we have nothing in common, but I'd like to be your friend" I would have accepted just because I'm such a swell guy.

That video has always been my most memorable part of SNL. I always remember the line from the opening sequence when he says "they all thought I'd be the first to go".

Then at the end when he is dancing on the graves, I can't help but chuckle.

Perhaps it is just one of those strange coincidences but a bit eerie nonetheless.

I made an AU account, to protect my business name. I did the same for all my alts, and the same people have tried to friend me and all my alts. I'm going to ignore them all, they are just friend count spammers.

A 'me too' post. But in my case I've found some common ground when checking their profiles. The couple I have ignored have returned to ask again. lol. So, I think I've accepted everyone and like Kaimi, will see what happens.

I have been accepting all but the most blatant hell no types- like group requests for things i am not interested in- but the friend requests dont bother me- it's not like it was SL and I have to keep track of who is who.. OMG- last night, Damien came in world and i clicked on his name - I thought - and made some gushy comment - and - omg - it was a guy whose name I recognized, but was not sure suddenly why he was on my friends list!! I was so mortified- but at least he was was quite alright with it and only 'chuckled' @ me

I derive a perverse satisfaction from hitting the 'ignore' button.
In my mind, saying : Get ye hence, peon. You're not special enough to be on my friends list

I'd think that, like on Facebook, anyone with hundreds of "friends" on their list is just snickered at for randomly friending people. The exception being that you need a huge list of 'friends' to effectively play certain Facebook game apps.

I don't see the point of this at AU.

I accept all of them. I figure they have a reason, if they're asking me. If we were inworld, and they were anywhere near me, I'd probably talk to them or they to me.

The groups, on the other hand, I only accept if *I* have a reason.

i just ignore. if we aren't friended yet, you can test it with me to see if it works. if we are friended, you can un-unite and then reunite and i'll ignore you. LOL

there is a name for that - boxtard. i'm famous for it. i haven't admitted all the times i sent a note to Eli but actually it went to someone else's IM i also had open. i think you got one or two, Amar. LOL oh, and i've said a few things in voice too, forgetting i was in a conference call.

Not sure about these other ones, but on Facebook you can press the "ignore" button and all it does is make the request go away from your screen, the other person sees nothing.

I thought boxtard was when you typed an IM into a wrong window...

I'm not sure I like the sound of that...

Anyway, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who finds the random friend requests a bit weird. Thanks y'all.

i had accepted a few random ones, but i went into my settings and deleted those i do not know. now everyone on my list is a real connection, except the Lindens (i think). but i did go to their shoutboxes and say howdy. i r friendly like that.

FB is a lot harder because there are RL people i try to avoid, and it's obvious you blocked them when you don't accept the offer and they can no longer find you in search.

Once upon a time, a billion years ago, I did not know Trout real well, other than he was someone on the forum.. I was in-world with then bf.. and Trout was in IM about regular, mundane things when he received a rather uhm, tender comment!! Oh god!!! I thought I wd just die- I mean- it was THE TROUT as in OMG FROM THE FORUM!!!! But he was an absolute gentleman, laughed with me, not at me and i quickly ended the convo...

Nowadays we are experienced.. and we know this stuff happens- but oh the poor noobs!!

re: AU random friend requests.

for the most part, no, there really is no reason other than padding their count. a lot of it comes from mining friends lists of friends, but lately the other pattern has developed. having a name that begins with a number puts me at the top of member lists (though i would prefer otherwise) so in the latest round of unite requests, while looking at the profiles to see if there was some reason why, i noticed that with many, nearly all of their friends names began with the letter "A".
(so, yes, Seven... there is a reason they sent you the request. they finally got to the letter S in the members list)
