I just had a bit of a "DUH" moment.
I've been using a freeware program called MWSnap, for quite a while. I use it a lot for capturing quick images of the screen here at work. For some reason it never occurred to me to use it with SL. It has options for capturing the full desktop, a window, or any user defined rectangle. Traditional SL Snapshot ![]() MWSnap Image ![]() As you can see in the two images the quality is about the same. It allows you to save as BMP, JPG, TIF, PNG, or GIF. One downside is that you have to work around GUI items like on screen chat or HUD's. The user define rectangle option is great for cropping or close ups. MWSnap Closeup ![]() If anyone is interested in giving it a try a google search for "MWSnap" will give you several options for downloading it. _____________________

Maybe . . . maybe not. The British National Party (BNP) is active in SL, has a group, and (at least last time I checked) a headquarters in world. It is an offshoot of the old fascist National Front: until last year, when the courts ruled it discriminatory, membership was restricted to Caucasians. They propose the repatriation of all non Caucasians from Britain. LL is, at some level, aware of their existence, because they keep getting ARed for the overtly racist signs that they put up. I'm afraid that I don't have a problem with a company -- LL, or whomever -- showing some ethical backbone. Would you critique an investment company that offered only "ethical" investments? Would you, before the end of Apartheid, have done business with a company that did business with South Africa? I make these kinds of decisions every day: I don't buy from companies that employ third-world sweatshops, or that don't engage in fair trade practices. And I do, in what ways I can, register my protest against those who do. That's all I am doing here. It's easy to forget that Second Life is not a democracy: it's a privately-owned fiefdom. I am anticensorship, for the greatest part, but "free speech" is only half of the equation: you also need responsive mechanisms for governance that counterbalance the lunatic fringe, the unethical, the racist, and so forth that "free speech" allows voice to. We don't have those in SL: we have a sort of benevolent dictatorship that allows anyone to say pretty much whatever they want so long as the corporation doesn't find it offensive, without providing the democratic tools to respond. If SL were an actual democratic state, I would trust that the mechanisms of democracy would keep the ethical ship on an even keel. Instead, we have a private corporation -- no different in that respect from Dow Chemical itself -- which makes top-down decisions about what IT views as ethically permissible. Given that I don't have a "vote" here to record my opposition, I take the same approach to LL that I take to any otherwise unresponsive corporation: I protest. (Sorry, I hope that doesn't sound grumpy. I don't want it to sound grumpy. . . .) So the communist groups that endorse mass murder are ok, because they are inclusive? Oh, the 3rd world sweatshop claim. You do realize that for the 3rd world, working in a sweatshop is better than hoeing the fields in the blazing sun for 12 hours a day. Um, Josh . . . do you mind if I do more or less this? Except, without the trickery: I'll make sure it is noted where the Bhopal slurl goes. Union Carbide was truly reprehensible, and Dow, as the new owner, has to take some responsibility for the ongoing environmental cleanup, if not for the compensation for the deaths of as many as 35,000 people. _____________________

I decided to play around with making animated gifs again and went back for a stroll in the forest. I took multiple images in a not so static pose while changing the time of day slightly using the environment editor. I wanted to show the interesting transitions in light that you see there. There are 18 frames in this gif and I'm sure there are ways to make the transitions smoother but I haven't figured that out yet nor am I that great with PS. It's still fun to play with, although I'd really like to improve my PS skills as it seems to take me forever to do even the simplest of things. ![]() Here's a cheap trick for making transitions seem smoother. 1. frame a 2. frame a at 50% opacity with frame b showing through. 3. frame b 4. frame b at 50% opacity with frame c showing through. 5. frame c and so on. _____________________
