I'm bumping Love to a 9.3. Offering to sell advice to women about how they could get me to call them sluttier than I otherwise would have is worth extra credit. There is a little very pretty Gorean lifestyle SIM, very low key, no drama, not a full combat or force collar SIM. Its not even on the Gor map.

Its more so a retreat in Gorean style. Pretty landscapes, nice tavern and Terrans are welcome to join. Good place to discuss latest gossip on Gor. The entrance is quite spectacular.

This really puzzles me. The whole Gorean thing leaves me cold; I'm of the 'do what you like so long as it's consensual and private' school of thought, but how can you have Gor without John Norman? This makes me think someone might decide to have Christianity without Jesus or the new testament. Or maybe I could beome a meat eating vegetarian? if you take the books out of the equation, then what you have is D/s, with a distinct male dominant slant (there are Mistresses and male slaves I know, but far fewer that the other way around), some sub-Rocky tussles and some dodgy sci-fi themes. If you're going to ignore the books then you can't really call it Gor.

As a sideline, doesn't all that third person talk and Y/you typing malarky give you RSI?

Let's see now, what precedent is there for claiming that a book or series of books contains all that is required to run your life successfully and happily, where the original authors are not available for cross-checking, where many different groups interpret the books differently, and where by far the majority only pay lip-service to what the books say, while continuing to recommend that everyone else sticks to the letter of the law?

Substitute "Christianity" for Gor and you will really have all the answers you need; the Goreans are even restrictive unto themselves, in a precise and direct emulation of the worst habits of the Faithful. The typing; that's just a technological anachronism, like the underline character being used in DTP programs.

Gor society is in the proper modality for those who would weather the storm of RP in the continuum of SL, while garbing their loins in leather and assuming the modality of the she-quadruped, or the rider of the she-quadruped, or really just someone who wants to rent a she-quadruped for a while. Modality.

The books are enormously misogynistic, in part as a satire of contemporary militant feminism, and outside of that context it's just another massive series of Harlequin SF/fantasy novels For Real Men (tm). Written about as well as you would expect of, let's be honest, lit scholar D/s fanfic.

The whole Gor thing in SL started as an aggressive social group firmly fixed in Norman's backstory, and its early arrivals were notorious for constantly trolling new resident areas (welcome areas, freebie plots) for "social recruitment". As you and others have noted, now even the majority of the so-called Gor types in SL can't take it seriously any more. It's Christianity with neither the Buddhist be-kind tone of the new Testament, nor the witch-burning domination of medieval Europe, just a boiled down commercial Christmas. Open for RP, leave your technology and fursuits at the door.

At least the majority of the 'punks and furries are creative.

I guess there are some really interesting (and somewhat troll-tastic) questions you can ask about this (in the proper... modality, or as we say in London "wiv yer smartarse 'ead on":

- do the Gor crowd know it was ironic satire at the time?

- Can you do an ironic satire with 20 sequels and bra-busting cover artwork?

- What's up with the body fascism, or did "slappy old munters of Gor" not make it to the top sellers list, back in '76?

- Are there any other book series invented in the 70's, now turned into quasi-religions, which could beneficially be taken up in SL and which might have a head start - say a movie tie-in or two?

- There seems to be a crossover point of some kind of social piety, that says you can't 'do' satire as RP: it would be unacceptable, for instance, to wander round as Oprah Winfrey, playing Gor's analogue of Osama bin Laden...

- using RP as a social experiment has a really low RL threshhold. So it's OK to have RP in AA meetings or in Marriage Guidance, abuse recovery, family therapy, and workplace group dynamics: but the minute there is no mummy figure around, it's a dangerous evil and has to be stamped out. Hmm; what's wrong with RPing being a mummy?

I'm married to a non-Gorean, alpha male type- the only Gorean component in my RL is my own perspective on things - no one keeps me to a certain path- I keep myself. And yeah, many RL friends do find me loony
