In RL I have both a kitchen and a bathroom. I use the bathroom far more than the kitchen.

In my SL home I have neither. What does that make me?

Hehe... I replaced my kitchen by a photo-studio in my SL-house... In RL the kitchen is more or less forbidden terrain for me (my partner is a chef cook :P). So as you, I use the bathroom more often :)

I go on the basis that everyone I chat too is a dude unless they can confirm otherwise.

accepted confirmation :

skype, or other voice client.

I just go along chatting and gaining friends regardless I think it only becomes an issue if you wanna do the hump da hump.

If your sl wife turns out to be a dude does that make you gay ? cause not. it makes you leanr nothing about the female species though and all those lines to impress her wasted on a real response! LOL

I have " your SL GF is a guy " T-shirts if anyone wants a free one.

I think there are ALOT of suppressed gay guys out there sa female avatars and hey if that helps them deal with their suppressed gayness they so be it.

OP - if you can't tell, why do you care?

Seriously, you need to listen before you get your equipment into gear. Doing so has never failed me yet. RL or SL.

You do realize that anyone willing to invest time into it (along with possible professional help) can sound like the opposite sex? The base "note" for male and female voice is an octave apart, but there is enough overlap in range between the sexes to switch.

As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, SL would and does make an ideal platform for the transgendered community and depending on how far along they are in the process even a webcam wouldn't tell you one way or the other even if they would be willing to strip down naked and pose.

Everyone's free to decide where they put the bar on giving in and accepting what they're presented with, but in the end, you'll never know whether someone online is the gender they say they are, or portray to be the way you can and do in real life.

It's merely one aspect of trust and for me personally I'd be as upset if somenone I invested in emotionally turns out to be a different gender, 10-20+ years older or younger, or a whole other range of things.

In my experience it's done primarily for "lesbian" sex (although ironically enough this type is far more likely to jump on a pose ball with another "lesbian";), to a far less degree because they find it easier to meet and interact with people that way or simply for fun (quite a few guys admitted to me to having a female alt they use for shopping and to dress and as someone in this thread mentioned because they'd rather stare at a pretty girl avatar for hours on end than a guy one).

I suspect I could detect a guy-playing-a-girl without too much trouble if I wanted to.

I would just sit them down and have a heart-to-heart where I rapid fire discussions about the kind of BC they take, the use of Jolen, RL hand bag designers, the pantyhose size chart, cosmetic brands, the obgyn, and break-through bleeding.

If the person you're testing can keep up with a discussion like that, they're a women (even if they have a penis.)

LOL! Wouldn't work on me Aimee. I AM a woman, but half those questions I wouldn't be able to answer. I have no idea what Jolen is, don't own a handbag (I use a small canvas camerabag), and haven't worn pantyhose in over 15 years.

People in SL just need to relax and accept whatever gender the avi is portraying. If you are uncomfortable with that then maybe the internet/SL isn't for you. :)

I'm a complete newbie, and, on a whim, chose a female body shape, initially. I dressed her up a little and walked around some for a few days. That was enough to convince me that women have it tough. Sure, there may be certain advantages, but what a pain to not be able to go anywhere without being innunated with crude sexual advances. I very quickly tired of that (like I said, a few days), and now my avatar is male and I'm working on making it look as much like the real me as possible.

The only problem is I'm not sure what to say to the people I've already met the next time I see them. Oh well.

that's too many irrelevant questions.

what kind of goof ball question is that? i don't need to answer goof ball questions from random noobs that nobody cares about.

Man, you're a troll. Very nice skirting of my question.
Personally, I think it's a valid question. You don't have an answer for it, so you try to dismiss it. Not gonna work, but thanks for proving your trollitude. We'll all know to ignore you from here on in.

Also, you haven't answered what makes me a 'noob'.
I don't think you will, but it was worth asking again.

i have a pair of friends who met in second life and are now happily married in rl. SERIOUSLY! :O

one third of people are not looking for that kind of relationship. however, they are looking for some form of relationship with other humans. personally i have a lot of relationships. you could too if you weren't so aggressive and judgemental.

If "one third of people are not looking for that kind of relationship", why bring it up?

And, if you would, PLEASE can you point us at where you're getting your numbers?

As for my relationships, you don't know me. You have no idea who I am, and yet you seem to feel free to insult me and indicate that I have no relationships.

You're ridiculous.

Sorry, but that kitchen thing was at least funny in its ignorance, this is just sad...

there's world outside of U.S with all different kinds of own measurements and sizing charts, different brands, and people who have no interest in american handbag designers, ... or even the ability to keep up with 'rapid fire' interrogation in foreign language about when they had their last period. Or will to have this kind of discussion with a relative stranger for that matter, since it's up to individual's taste, upbringing and cultural environment, and these again can quite vary past U.S borders.

The best you can find out is maybe "this person meets my, Aimee Weber's stereotype of what defines being a woman" but then this doesn't really strike me as very meaningful.

... On the other hand it took some 3 seconds to find out about that Jolen thing thanks to the google and the wonder that's internet. Guess if it wasn't for this thread i'd remain blisfully unaware of not meeting the gender standards o.O;

hmmm...you would say that now wouldn't you. My other name is Cookie Monster :P

Now before this thread gets locked for personal attacks or off topic :) ....

OP strive for a committed relationship regardless of the avie's gender and then you won't have to be embarrased to know that the bits you were humping were different than what you expected.

And to Joannah, relax, slide! My post was tongue-in-cheek. I also wrote a humor article about this a while back:

Well it's not like a quiz where you have to get the answers correct. I find a lot of RL women don't know the brand of their own hand bags and will say something like "Oh I have this brown purse I got at Target, I don't even know what it is." That's totally valid! On the other hand, RL guys who have tried to stump me have so far ALL said "PRADA" Every single one of them. LOL!

But as I said above, this is more for fun than a tried and true method of gender identification. One shouldn't protest too much. ;)

..and they'd be an AMERICAN woman. I had a somewhat stop-start chat today with a kinky SL er who (at least pretended) to only speak french, and nothing else. Try any of those brands on her (or any of the Europeans, where pantyhose is reserved for funerals, job interviews, and court appearances) and you'd hit a blank.

Oh, and there is an SL transgendered community. Sadly, it gets more attacks and grief than any other place I've visited in SL - in fact, more than all the others put together. Seems as if it's a rite of passage if you are a k00l h8cr d00d from the bible belt, to drop in on the trannies and hammer some cages down over all their poseballs in SL. You can almost see the zits popping...

Interesting reading through this thread. I had created a female av using this name - threw a lot of people off, but most knew. I'm back to being myself so I don't have to lie. I also created a female av but hardly ever get asked my gender in SL. If they do, I say "I am waht I am." They are cool with that.

What have I learned as a female? Guys can be jerks. You role play through a situation, he gets to the end and your av is not, and poof, he logs off without a goodby. Happened in some guys SL apt, and on a beach. Helps me in RL so if I get in that situation, I would never treat someone like that. It's great insite on how to treat a woman properly.

That's my 2¢ worth. :)

That's it! You got it!

All who fit this category can say they are a GIRL and their profile can spell it out. This would be differnt than the Woman category. (Sorry, don't have a clever acronym for woman...)
