Lastly, how would Linden enforce this? ... Show them your tackle over a webcam?

Priceless. TY.

SL is populated by 100% males.

I guess I'd better get my ID changed!

Is there anyway to tell if the woman you are talking to is not really a man? or vice versa?

Is Linden Lab considering adding gender verification to protect people from getting tricked into hooking up with the undesired gender of personal choice?

This is of paramount importance to one third of all players!

You've gotta be trollin', right?

I'm in the other 2/3rds. I take folks for what they present as, cuz, after all, I 'spect them to do the same for me. It's like the virtual golden rule, or *should* be.

If this is a concern to you, then I think your best bet is to not engage in activities on Second Life that could lead to you havin' to ask that question. Probably not the answer ya want, but if LL isn't even doin' proper age verification, then there's no way they'll be able to getcha something as slippery as gender.

SL is populated by 100% males. Adding gender verification will result in the loss of one third of all the players, most of which are inclined to hook up with genders not similar to their own, and totally detrimental to the apparatus vendors and highly damaging to the economy.

Do you believe the nonsense you spout, or is it just for attention? I'm just curious.

Also, if things get steamy, men's typing goes south much, much faster.
*Giggle* Well, it's so difficult for the poor boys to type with one hand! Whereas we girls have other options. *Wink's and looks in the direction of her box full of favorite 'toys'.*

If the RL gender of the people you meet in SL bothers you so much, then assume everyone you meet is male, married or already has a mate (or couldn't get a mate in RL if they tried), the wrong age for you, and likely to be someone that if you met them in RL, you wouldn't be attracted to on sight. You'll be right more often than you'll be wrong, regardless of what gender they present themselves as, or how pretty their SL avatar is. Real females are a lot more rare on the Internet than males, and more than 70% of the 'females" that I know from the Internet have proven over time to really be males.

Oh, and one caution about asking "questions only a girl would know". Married males, or males who have lived with a woman for an extended period of time, if they are not completely clueless, may well know the right responses as well, from their experiences living in close proximity to the opposite sex. I'm sure my RL mate could readily answer questions about frequency of periods, cramps, issues with the OB/GYN on the last visit, and other female complaints!

I'm female -- I'll even suffer through Angelique LaFollette's questions if that would help prove it. LOL However, based on some of the comments I've just read, I admit I felt an ugre to go check and make sure!

Personally, I find that women use less punctuation in chat than men.
Unless I'm in a BIG hurry in chat, I use complete sentences including proper capitalization and punctuation. This is habit from having learned typing at the age of 10.

From: Gummi Richthofen
lastly, there's a couple of good tests: if the character invites you back to their place, and there's a kitchen, then it's a real woman. If their hairstyle is basic but their bod is bodacious, then it's a man...

My Partner of almost two years, Sami Tabla (a male in and out of SL, BTW) and I do not have a kitchen in the Villa we built. Now granted, had I been building for just "me", I probably would have added one. But, since this was a joint project and Sami didn't see the need, our villa is kitchenless.

And let's talk about hair... I was very lucky early on in my Second Life. I came across someone selling hair textures and found an absolutely incredible Auburn Wavy texture that I fell MADLY in love with. From that day until the day I purchased my first Flexi-prim hair, you'd only see me in Prim Hair when I was feeling like wearing my hair "up".

Anywho... you can continue to think I'm a guy if ya want. That'll be one less Avatar Sami has to worry about hittin' on me! LMBO

As for how I can tell the Mike's from the Michelle's... I have my tricks, but like Angelique, I'll never tell! :D

Just a question...

WHY is it of "paramount importance"? and why do you think that anyone but you gives a shit, ESPECIALLY in the numbers you mention?

Who are you to speak for that many people? Did they all get together and ask you to do so? Did you get a gajillion IMs saying "Hey, random person that no-one knows or cares about, do us a favour and get to the bottom of this "Is it a boy or a girl" conundrum for us?"

Just curious...

i don't appreciate your tone of voice, noob.

obviously i didn't get a"gajillion" IMs. second life is not that large yet. it doesn't matter how many people asked me. what matters is that one third of all players may be entering relationships under false pretenses and this could be harmful to themselves and to LL.

YAY! I get called a noob twice in one day!

Personally, I don't give a damn whether you appreciate my tone of voice. I don't appreciate you trolling, but...

Here's an off topic question...

What the hell does that mean? Calling me a noob? Are you actually trying to make me feel bad that I haven't played a game as long as you have? Is that really a mark of honour? That you've been playing this for longer than me? Seriously? That makes you better than me? Also, isn't a year and a bit enough time for someone to no longer be a "noob"? If not, how long? Do I have to do anything else to stop being a noob? Buy land? Done it. Start a business? Done that. What else?

Also, you didn't answer my question... so I'll rewrite it.

What gives you the right to speak for "one third of all players"? Where are you getting that number and what makes this of "paramount importance"?

If you're coming to SL to find a relationship, like, a serious relationship, one where you're going to move in together and get married... jesus.. I can't even get my head around it.

You seriously believe that one third of the people that play on SL are looking for a RELATIONSHIP?

Seriously?

That's just... it's so ridiculous that I HAVE to believe you're trolling.

If you're not, I grow concerned...

There is no way of telling the gender of the person you are talking to! I'm a woman in RL and a woman in SL and the tests people have suggested generally don't apply to me.

My chat, unless I'm in a hurry, has good grammar, spelling and punctuation (maybe because copyediting is part of my job). But I would have thought that women had better grammar etc. than men - in virtually all western countries women do significantly better than men at creative subjects like english literature, history etc.

Also, if I had a house in SL there is NO WAY I would have a kitchen - I'm not the domestic type!

I have taken care with my appearance and have nice hair (in my opinion) but as I'm new I don't yet have prim hair - though I plan to get some at some stage.

From my perspective though, I couldn't care less what gender people are in RL. I have zero interest in having cyber-sex with someone when I don't know who they are or how old they are. For those of you who do - doesn't it bother you that your 'partner' could be a 12-year-old boy or girl who has borrowed mummy or daddy's credit card? It would bother me - and you can't always tell by their chat - I was a very mature, intelligent child and if I had wanted to pretend to be an adult I could have.

Wait, is this the same one third that keeps coming up to me and saying "nice tits, wanna cyber?" or "can anyone give me $11L for uploads?" or is this the 1/3 of players that says "are you italian?" and walks away before I can respond? Or the 1/3 of all players who walk off the docks and ignore you when you say hello?

No.. I know.. this is that 1/3 of all players that is shooting at the other 2/3... or is the the 1/3 of all players that have ban lines erected around their homes? Or is this the 1/3 who offers a friendship request before talking to you?

- reminds me of Yahoo Messenger, and the guys who type "24, M, cut, u cam?" and then send me a picture of a penis (probably not even theirs).

in my experience in SL.. only about 1/10th of all "cyber interested" people are paranoid about "are you really a girl?". These people ALWAYS have a male avatar... and tend to have default linden skin and freebie clothes. Appearance to them isn't important, as is evidenced by them not even noticing the thousands of lindens (on average) that female avatars have invested to "look really good".

What really irks me about this intrusion of RL into SL.. is that SL provides a really unique opportunity for the transgendered in RL.. an opportunity to litterally sluff off that old sex, and act and appear as a member of the proper sex. A number of very close friends are Trans in real life.

I find it appalling when people question me, or anyone else.. about RL gender or whatnot. Take me as I present to be, or don't. Frankly.. if you're the "kind of person" who would ASK a question like that.. then you certainly don't know me well enough for me to have relations with you.

That 1/3 of all players.. or 1/30th as my own experiences suggest.. I dont' want to have sex with them anyways.

So just for giggles, I tell them I'm a guy.. makes them run away and doo all kinds of freaking out. My own personal greifing war.

But then, I'm a lesbian anyways.. my girlfriend and Mistress know the truth, and that's all that matters.

What I have between my legs, is none of your business.. cause you're never going to get close enough to even see it.

FD, much as some would like you to believe, it's not as depraved as you might think.
There is plenty to do in SL besides pixelhumping.
Come on into the pool. The water's fine.

Was that referring to me, or to the poster who I quoted?

I assure you I wasn't trolling. I was commenting on the line that was something along the lines of "SL is 100% male" or some such nonsense...

Hold on just one danged minute!

You mean to tell me that there are people impersonating the opposite sex on teh interweb?

You gotta be kidding me...When did THIS start?

Next you'll be telling me that my "Nigerian Prince" business partner is actually an email spammer attempting to gain access to my bank account so he can rip me off...

My world is growing darker minute by minute...I don't know who to trust anymore.. :(
