/me nods to what Winter Ventura said.
RL is RL. SL is SL. While there are those that insist on injecting RL (especially the negative aspects) into SL, it doesn't have to be. SL lets you be what you want to be, no matter what you are in RL.
I wonder how many nekos and furries are asked "are you really a kitty cat in RL?"
I wonder how many people on World of Warcraft (which I do not play, but saw the South Park episode) are asked "are you really an elf in RL" or "are you really a dwarf in RL?"
Why must SL be necessarily the same as RL just because the avatars are humanoid?

From: danica Cullen "are you really an elf in RL" Heh... Being as how they're attached to the side of my head... I can't see if my ears are pointy or not. My image in a photograph... or in a mirror is no more "real" than my avatar in SecondLife, they're all intangible illusions made with tricks of light... how could I possibly trust them as accurate? Am I an Elf in RL? Hard to say... it depends on whose RL I'm in at the moment.

A long time ago there was a debate about llDetectSex, it didn't go very far. It ended with the conclusion that it would be useless (and a senseless encroachment on privacy).
I seriously doubt 1/3 really care about this issue.
If a tree falls in a forest and nobody is around to hear it does it make a sound? If it stays in SL does it really matter?

No kitchen here either
11-02-2006 18:28
Having a kitchen in SL is a luxury that only people with large houses can afford. My modest home only has three rooms; a living room, a bedroom/office, and a guest room. Kitchens in SL aren't very interesting spaces; you can't really cook anything in them, you don't get any warmth from the virtual stove, and they usually are full of hard surfaces that are lousy places to sit, so only people with enough land to afford to waste a room will have one.

From: Jauani Wu i don't appreciate your tone of voice, noob. obviously i didn't get a"gajillion" IMs. second life is not that large yet. it doesn't matter how many people asked me. what matters is that one third of all players may be entering relationships under false pretenses and this could be harmful to themselves and to LL. From this, and your Other Thread Jauani, It strikes me that you are Inordinately Fascinated with what OTHER people do in their Bedrooms, and with Whom. Why is this? Angel.

From: Jauani Wu Is there anyway to tell if the woman you are talking to is not really a man? or vice versa? Go furniture shopping together, find a nice bathroom set that will match the house, rez it, come back a few days later and see whether the toilet seat is up or down .

From: Mickey McLuhan Here's an off topic question...
that's too many irrelevant questions. From: someone What gives you the right to speak for "one third of all players"? Where are you getting that number and what makes this of "paramount importance"?
what kind of goof ball question is that? i don't need to answer goof ball questions from random noobs that nobody cares about. From: someone If you're coming to SL to find a relationship, like, a serious relationship, one where you're going to move in together and get married... jesus.. I can't even get my head around it. You seriously believe that one third of the people that play on SL are looking for a RELATIONSHIP? Seriously? That's just... it's so ridiculous that I HAVE to believe you're trolling. If you're not, I grow concerned... i have a pair of friends who met in second life and are now happily married in rl. SERIOUSLY! one third of people are not looking for that kind of relationship. however, they are looking for some form of relationship with other humans. personally i have a lot of relationships. you could too if you weren't so aggressive and judgemental.

From: Winter Ventura What really irks me about this intrusion of RL into SL.. is that SL provides a really unique opportunity for the transgendered in RL.. an opportunity to litterally sluff off that old sex, and act and appear as a member of the proper sex. A number of very close friends are Trans in real life. I find it appalling when people question me, or anyone else.. about RL gender or whatnot. Take me as I present to be, or don't. Frankly.. if you're the "kind of person" who would ASK a question like that.. then you certainly don't know me well enough for me to have relations with you.
relationships should be based on honesty, not deception. if people are afraid of being rejected because of the truth, then what is really gained but heartache by deception? the end result will be the same. heartache can be avoided!

What's this, an actual conversation? Where we are allowed to talk and might be moved to say something? I didn't think they allowed that on the forums anymore. Well, since it is going on somehow anyway, I'll participate: . Nobody has ever, in any online game, asked me if I were really a girl. . I have a kitchen, I put kitchens in my houses, and I like kitchens. . I use lots of punctuation when I type. . I don't have prim hair. What keeps holding me back is being bald. I mean, the way people look bald when you are over a certain distance from them. Having default hair means never looking bald. . Angelique never asked me her three questions, or if she did, she did it so skillfully I didn't realize I was being tested. . I am pretty good at telling people's real gender, but I can be fooled, and fooled for a long time. This doesn't bother me much, because what it means to me is that person really is spiritually quite of the gender he/she portrays. (Course I'm not cybering with them either; then I would be bothered if they hadn't told me the truth.) coco

Wow, this is quite some thread - glad I had my say near the beginning! Okay, I'm a noob <bow> <scrape> <grovel> From: Winter Ventura What really irks me about this intrusion of RL into SL.. is that SL provides a really unique opportunity for the transgendered in RL.. an opportunity to litterally sluff off that old sex, and act and appear as a member of the proper sex. I utterly agree with all you say. One of the most awesome facets I find in SL is the way barriers have been broken down. Now people can really let their minds out from the restrictions of their physical bodies. They can be what they want to be, who they want to be. Not just in their sex but all of their physical capacity. From: Jauani Wu i have a pair of friends who met in second life and are now happily married in rl. SERIOUSLY! I also understand your point Jauani. I met my RL partner in a games help forum 7 years ago (text only!) where our friendship grew to the point we wanted to meet IRL. She has since moved home closer and we are now engaged. She has now joined SL and last night, though still over 70 miles away, with the help of SL we had a very passionate and loving evening. I know this isn't Utopia and I understand the opportunites laid open here are liable to misuse and abuse but the individual ultimately has the option of just turning away. The idiom 'horses for courses' I think is very apt for SL There are many other posters in this thread I agree with ... but I'm a hobbit .. not a troll

To an extent you are right there, but it depends on how you design your kitchen, too. My larger home is a large one, admittedly, but my kitchen is as much a 'social space' as my living room or family room are. It has comfy cushions to kneel on, in Japanese fashion, around a low dining table. It's my favorite informal conversation area. And American "country kitchen' with a dining room table in the kitchen area is another example of a kitchen that is also a social space. My smaller home has no kitchen, however. It does have a bathroom, for sharing a shower or a bath with someone, but I didn't choose to add a kitchen there... yet. I still might, as I am not done remodeling it to my liking.

From: someone It's fairly Simple really. I ask Three simple questions. If i don't get accurate answers in Nanoseconds,, I'm Speaking to a Man.
I've seen a list of questions which are supposed to be unanswerable by a RL guy - they were questions about things like the timing of periods, tampon applicators, makeup, hair colouring, stocking sizes, ring sizes etc. I wouldn't say it would be impossible for a guy to know the answers, but he'd only know them if he did a lot of research. I stopped worrying about the RL gender of my female SL friends a fair while ago (no, I don't use the list of questions on them!), I figure that if they can pull off being the opposite gender long enough to fool me over a period of months without ever slipping up they must be at least a bit female in their brains

In RL I have both a kitchen and a bathroom. I use the bathroom far more than the kitchen. In my SL home I have neither. What does that make me? P.S, Mickey, way to go cousin! Jen
