From: SuezanneC Baskerville If you start a forum, and you don't have any friends you can lean on to provide preliminary posts to jumpstart it, how in the world do you get people to register and post in it? No one wants to read it since there's nothing posted, and no one wants to post since there's not any readers.
So far my idea is to create a bunch of fake accounts and simulate a bunch of posts and responses. One of the reasons this forums stuff LL is supposedly doing pisses me off so much is that I really don't have much interest in leaving secondlife.com. I'm a big fan of the SL/RL line. If it weren't for that, I would be at this new forum that I have heard nothing but good things about.

So far my idea is to create a bunch of fake accounts and simulate a bunch of posts and responses. Getting a forum going isn't an easy matter. If I'm not mistaken, I registered at yours a few weeks ago but, as you said, the lack of fresh posts makes it easy to forget about. I registered in the cartel forum the other day but it's the same there. To get people in, they need to see that it exists and right now is a very good time to have it boldy displayed in your sig line. Better still, add a bold line (copy&paste) to the end of each post - for people like me who have sigs turned off.

From: Lee Ponzu It is serious problem that light bulbs are not as hot as they used to be. EZ bake ovens are suffering seriously as a result. Just read some of the EZ bake forums for details. Damn those CFL lightbulbs!

From: Raymond Figtree I say this because RA actually died the day that Trout left.
I'm done with SL forums. Done with SL too. I choose the real world, even with its gravity and real responsibilities, because we can look into each other's eyes and hold each other's hands.
One last time:
1) Never set your land for sale "for anyone" when you want to sell it to a specific person. Even if the person you intend to sell it to is standing right next to you and there is no one else on the sim. Landbots buy land a lot faster than humans can.
2) Never abandon land. Set it a little lower than the lowest price on the mainland for sale list and it will sell in minutes.
Bye all. Oh Ray. I'm so sorry. I didn't know you well, but have been enriched by knowing you even a little. Be safe, friend.

I dont post here any more, but I do read still, I still come here for information when I need it, and its a darn sight more responsive to grid problems than 'Grid Status'. I cant remember which came first, my finding RA or finding Caledon, but this post by Des has saddened me more than anything I can remember happening to me in SL :- From: Desmond Shang Closing this forum will affect my long term plans with Second Life.
Quite sincerely,
Des. I have been a resident of Caledon since it was 8 sims only, about three years. Does this mean that when I see RA falter I should look for an end to my time at Caledon? And... then I see this.... From: Raymond Figtree I say this because RA actually died the day that Trout left.

Bye all. I am just... amazed... I don't understand... I feel abandoned... I have enjoyed RA, greatly, and I dont post or read any other forum for SL, but I dont see how enjoyment of SL inworld depends on it. Imogen

From: Ponsonby Low I can't help wondering how many Lindens have noticed how clunky and unfunctional the Blog is as compared with this place. From their PoV that's a good thing. They don't want an actual engaged community expressing the real concerns of people in world. They want a showroom community to display to investors and 'business life' clients...

It doesn't DEPEND on it, but it adds to it , at least for me. A good portion of the people on my friends list came from this forum. This forum was responsible for The Forum Cartel being an inworld group. This forum helps people stay in touch when the can't be inworld at the same time. Also, the decsion to close it is to many people here a slap in the face from LL, another sign that they don't care about the people here, their current customers, the people who brought them this far.

Good points Brenda, and I agree with all of your former paragraph, but as for the latter, I don't agree, I have seen a lot of positive changes in SL in my three years, and while some may believe that LL dont care, that belief has been long held, its nothing new... I could list many evidences of it in my three years, some of which have changed for the better, some not. I am not ready to bale out ... things need to get a lot worse, or other worlds need to get a lot better before I will leave SL... Blue Mars certainly isn't an alternative for me... and I don't think any other place will fare better, ever... they have seen too many 'mistakes' that they perceive LL to have made, and the result is that no new metaverse will dare to allow the things that SL still offers ... I am happy to take SL warts and all for the freedoms that still linger. Nor will I allow the loss of one pleasant aspect of my experience of the people of SL to allow me to abandon all of them... if I lose the forums, I would be even less willing to lose the people inworld.. It saddens me to see others willing to throw in the towel and lose everything, because the forums *might* (it hasnt happened yet) end. imogen

imogen I have to agree with this, and was wondering earlier, reading the 'Rime' thread in the blogrum; Wallace said an announcement will be made in a couple weeks; he didn't say what the announcement will be, we just assumed the worst, immediately. I'm going to wait and see...what he actually says, when he says it.

...and, as much as I accept their right to exist, I'm starting to think some in SLA have a really poor attitude. Also as much as I don't really want to get much into the us/them stuff, I found this ending reply to a question Meade asked about search, and got a lot of crap for, pretty damned amusing, as well as 100% accurate.. The rest of the thread was disapointing and would have gotten us a glare from Millie or Strife long before it ended. From: Paladin Pinion I think there has been a wide gap in communications here between what some people are used to and what others expect. Here's what I saw:
OP: I want a quart of milk. How do I get that?
Farmhand: It's easy. There's the cow.
OP: I went to the cow but I don't see any milk. Can you describe what I need to do?
Farmhand: Don't know how it could be any simpler. Milk the cow. It's right there in front of you.
OP: Yes, but is there a way to just get a quart of milk? Quickly?
Interloper: You're too stupid to have milk.
OP: That doesn't help. How do I quickly get milk? I've been to the cow but I don't see any milk.
Farmhand: I've explained it several times, there's nothing to it, I'm sorry you can't understand it.
Bystander: You have to catch the cow, provide a container, milk the cow, fill the container, pasteurize the milk, and take it home.
OP: So there is no way to just pick up a quart of milk?
Farmhand: We told you how. I give up.
Interloper: You [expletive deleted]. Go back to where you belong. Your tiny mind can't process the simplest things. [expletive expletive]
Bystander: No, there are no stores here with bottles of milk. You have to extract and process the milk yourself.
OP: Thank you, Bystander. That's what I needed to know.

Maybe there will be new proper forum software and this will be archived. New, fabulous forums where everything works and PMs are on by default!

It was Robin who always said the forums are part of SL history and must be preserved (archived). I hope whoever makes decisions believes that. It's too bad we lost all the old attachments.

From: Milla Janick Blue said the plan is replace them, but he hasn't said with what that I know of. I think most people assume it's the SLA blogs. Blue said during his office hours that they would be replaced with Clearspace (the software that runs the blogrums) and that the content here would be archived. Because LL isgoing to move to the next version of Clearspace soon, my guess is the timing of changing the forums over would be consistent with that.

It's too bad we lost all the old attachments. At one point they were considering a conversion, but that changed back to archiving after Blue saw what a mess it made of the old blog comments and links. One nice little thing to see: the new-ish develop.secondlife.com portal links back to the scripting library here, so someone at LL still sees value here.

They really should keep the Content foums going. I've never looked at them but they must be better behaved than RA. I'll even promise to never go there if they keep them going.
