We tried that already. Back during the ramp up to Zindra, Blue said he "was not aware of any significant opposition" to the coming Adult Content policies. He said this even though there were already thousands of posts in the various forum threads on the topic.

Thousands of people sent him notecards and IMs in response.

A month or so later, after being literally inundated with messages, the bastich had the nerve to say the same thing.

I guess if you don't acknowledge protests publicly, you can make them cease to exist.

Sure that wasn't Jack?

People will gravitate to the easiest way to participate. With the official forums, they've already got an account and log in. If somebody just wants to ask a quick question, this is where they will head first. When people join up over at SLU or SC, they are in fact joining a new community and need to create accounts, establish themselves, etc. A lot of people won't do that if they just want to jump in and ask a question without making a commitment to joining a new tribe.

There will also be a fair number of people who just want to antagonize LL for destroying (yet again) a thriving community of people who are enthusiastic (even if occasionally disgruntled) fans of their product. The SL Answers mods are going to be very busy for a very long time. You can watch this same phenomena at work over at SCII. With the supposed rule of no banning and no moderation, it invites those with the inclination to see just where the boundaries are. SL Answers will go through the same sort of boundary testing.

For what it's worth I just posted a thread to the Blogs...

https://blogs.secondlife.com/thread/7804

...asking "What will it take to prevent the demise of the Second Life Forums?"

I kept it short and sweet, but asked that people show support for the forums by replying to the thread. If it doesn't get nuked before I post this maybe head over and add some weight to it?

While they may or may not take any notice of what happens here I assume they do watch the shiny new blogs.

I have spoken with Blue several times on it myself and he is so keen for the new Jive SW, which is a real shame really imho

I thought Blue was female? Granted I've seen Blue in world only as a blue bipedal dragon/dino (to which I didn't think had a specific gender attached). I've seen pictures of Blue in female alien also, though. And Blue's flickr page seems to indicate rl female. Based on name.

I think it will happen naturally. Some people will just focus their time on third-party forums that they already belong to like SLU and Second Citizen, but humans are a social species. All it will take is a few "regulars" posting someplace and the rest of the herd will gravitate to the new grazing field. The way the space is used will change because SL Answers is less conducive to ongoing conversations, but if LL thinks they will be getting rid of Jig's inane threads and round #47,582 of "is it cheating?" they should think again.

I'm not convinced, if you take the old Xstreet forums as an example, a lot of the regulars from there simply don't use the new blogrums, some appeared early on but then they moved on, others have hardly posted at all, ever, to the new blogrum and if you look at how few posts are made there compared to the old xstreet forum it tells its own story.

SL Answers is not a place for discussion, Lexie has made that clear several times. Whether there will be a resident answers remains to be seen.

I've spoken to a couple of people from Jive, and have looked at other customers' forums based on Jive. LL could format a new "Discussions" area that works very similarly to this forum, though scalability is an issue.

Supposedly, they wouldn't even need help from Jive support to do that.

LL just hasn't bothered, or thinks something about the aesthetics of that is unpleasing, or actually WANTS them to be unusable. Hard to say.

:)

Like Ciaran said above, it's sorta the standard-LL-line. Hardly the first time that they asked for feedback and somehow only heard the people that agreed with them.

I'm bothered by the word "jive". It's slang for talking sh*!. Like "jive turkey" or "he/she's talking jive".

But on second thought, since this is second life and sometimes they speak from both sides of their mouths, it may be appropriately named.

Blue answered my notecard. He didn't go into a lot of detail but did say the plan was to replace the forums with something more functional and easy to maintain, and the plan was not to kill the forums.

Whether this means the SLA/Blogs, or new or updated forum software he didn't say. Wishfully thinking, I'm hoping with all the closed threads saying the blogs aren't the appropriate place for discussion that means improved forum software.

On the other hand, I think if LL planned on keeping the forums open in any form independent of SLA, Wallace would have put in a guest appearance over here by now.

I guess I'll drop by Blue's next office hours and hopefully get more details.

Assuming I can forget the futility of the adult content business by next Wednesday.

Please say he didn’t use the word “scalable”
That was their catch phrase for killing the Mentor Group. We weren’t “scalable”

When LL stopped adding new Live Helpers several residents outrighted asked Blue if they were planning on closing it down and the answer was a clear "no plans to do that".

A few weeks later we had a Live Helper meeting and Blue announced that the decision to close it down had been made many months before.

Rince and repeat for mentors.

And likely rince and repeat for these forums which he was never all that fond of (although to be fair he was one of the Lindens assigned to a week of answering/moderating/filtering the now defunct "Linden Answers" and with a then non-existant support that often did turn very ugly and personal to whatever poor Linden was assigned to play resident babysitter).

SL's Alexa Rank is 3966 today.

IMO Forums should stay as they keep folks informed and on the site. ;)

This forum has become a major part of my "SL experience." It will hurt -- a lot -- to see it close. And I think that the hints from Blue and Wallace suggest that this time they mean it: it WILL close.

What will interest me is if they end up offering an alternative. LL loves good spin: it's hard to believe that they will use a blog post to simply close the forums down without offering a new shiny in its stead. Were they planning to merely turn off the lights here, I think they would do it more quietly.

So is any Linden going to have the class to announce anything here IN the forum they are planning to kill off? I somehow doubt it. It would be nice for the new "Concersation Manager* to make at least one appearance here. But I'm sure he'll be Tweeting his ass off about it.

Interesting thought. The problem is that the format of SL Answers is so horrible that I suspect most of us want to have nothing to do with it.

It might be kind of cool to collectively swarm the SL Answers, though, on the day that they close this down, and try to put our imprint on it. Get Jig to post a couple of her characteristic threads, and the entire machine might grind to a screeching halt, and come crashing down.

In all seriousness, though . . . I think that it's a worthwhile thought. Opening a large "protest" thread on SL Answers when this is shut down . . .

Once this forum shuts down, I won't go near any part of www.secondlife.com. They can keep their blog and SL answers, and the rest of the site is crap as far as I am concerned. I have no use for the Dashbored (tm) as well.

Alternative forums will be just like alternative Mentor groups. Too many to choose from and no cohesive center. All created and ran by well meaning citizens with good intentions but each with their own agenda and limited participation. I often direct new residents to these forums because here I know there will be a rich pool of talented residents who can respond to any question. And as mentioned so often … its entertaining :)

I agree. Each 3rd party site has it's own personality. SLU for example, is inhabited to alrge degree by creators, business owners and tech types. Here, it was sort of a melting pot. There are users from just about every level and interest. It makes for better conversation.

/me hopes that people who don't want these forums to go away have told Blue Linden about it. Notecard, office hour, chat, blog comments, whatever.

We did that months ago. Oryx and several others attended a meeting with Blue armed with notecards culled from responses here. I spoke with Blue several times in IM, again sharing our concerns. They've know how we feel for long enough.

Go back to when Nika and Qie first took up the banner, then Katt's dog and pony show, the call for new resMods, the
"New" outsourced moderated forum that was to have been implemented last year, bla, bla bla. The Lab has been jerking our chain over this forum for at least 2 years.

I can't help wondering how many Lindens have noticed how clunky and unfunctional the Blog is as compared with this place.

None, probably. They seem to have a problem recognizing the obvious.

They're gonna pull that "we listened" thing again, though. I'd bet money on it.
