Bay City is showing up on the map, but you can't TP there yet. There's even a sim named 'Bay City - Argos' and I'm not allowed in there either. If they're going to name a sim after me, I ought to be able to get there. I get no respect. If you type Bay City into the sim name on the map, you can see the list of sims. The real city is in a different location than the Bay City Template sims.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Civilization has found Gaeta's northern bounds. Land Barons with no sense of planning have carved up several northern regions without any sense of rhyme or reason that I can fathom. I wonder how much longer Magellan's campsite will be safe. This is why Magellan has moved on. He was never one to tarry too long in one place, especially when the first signs of civilization begin to nip at his boots. As long as he has a place to explore, as long as there are new lands to venture to and as long as folks follow him and begin to occupy the places he's left behind, this world will continue to grow. I don't think it necessarily a bad thing that Gaeta is beginning to be settled. True, it will no longer be a pristine and empty wilderness. But it will remain and grow. People will have a stake in it and it's future. As long as they continue to support it, it will stay on the Grid. I have witnessed firsthand what happens when a place fails to gain enough support to continue. Twice. I was fortunate enough to be among the first explorers who were permitted down into the cavern beneath New Mexico's desert when the ancient city of D'ni was first opened to the public at the end of 2003. A few months later the D'ni Restoration Council (DRC) lost it's funding and the cavern was closed. It was sad and very unfortunate. There was so much unrealized promise in that world. But it was not to be. I found my way here in early 2004 and, though the memories lingered, I haven't looked back. This world is very different than Uru, the world of the D'ni. This place is much more open ended and accessible. The possibilities are much more unlimited. Though beautiful and mysterious, the world of Uru was a very controlled and closed off place. And, somehow, the way Uru was brought into being and set up was not done in such a way that allowed it to continue to exist. In this world, people lay claim to land and can do with it what they please. We have ownership and can have a direct bearing on how the world develops. Indeed, even helping to ensure that it continues. Not too long ago the DRC managed to secure funding and the cavern beneath New Mexico was opened to the public once again. I visited a few times... but nothing much had changed. I kept wanting to return to this vibrant and unpredictable world I share with you all and my visits to Uru became very infrequent. I was not very surprised to hear that the cavern had been closed again recently. Perhaps they will find a way to open it up permanently. I hope so. That world has been an inspiration to me and I would hate to see it lost. But this world and, more importantly, the people in it are a huge inspiration to me as well. Perhaps some of the lessons and examples put forth by this world will pave the way for the return of Uru again in the future? There were Uru refugees who arrived here with me the first time and I'm sure there are more who have crossed over to this world more recently. That Gaeta is getting settled is good news to me. It means that it becomes possible for Magellan, and other explorers, to search out new lands and explore new places. My family and I have a lot at stake in this world. I don't ever want it to become static and stale. I want to see it continue to grow and have new continents continue to appear along the new frontiers. It will be interesting to see what happens in Gaeta. Who will work with whom? What interesting places will folks create? What new communities will develop? The world is still a very small place and we have seen only the western most part of Gaeta. I think Magellan's campsite will serve as a reminder that he is here, that he is a part of this world and that he is on the move. It is a place on the new continent with connections to other parts of the world — places he's been before like the Heteracera Atoll, the islands of the Di-ingue Baughtians, Nova Albion and the new Bay City. There is a bottle left behind with ties to folks that are more accessible than he is. I hope Osprey hasn't been badgered too much about that. There is a badge left behind to peak folk's interest and fuel their imaginations concerning some of the undercurrents of our society. I think his campsite is here to stay. I'm excited to see where his airship takes him. |

I sent it to Magellan as I care very much for him. The fear I had was that in investigating we might inadvertantly, by always being there, close off the ability for Magellan to manifest himself. As I always used to say (amusing myself, only, with my punning, I'm sure) when people came up behind me, "I don't like being chaste." I long for Magellan's return, when he need not be chased. _____________________

This is terribly sweet and poetic... you, going about your work in Nova Albion; he, traveling to wild new lands; each thinking about the other. I hope you're reunited soon. ![]() _____________________

Gaps in the purple set on the for-auction sims of new continents always reveal Linden land contained in them. Normally this is for roads and canals. There's something new in Gaeta - not seen in Nautilus or Corsica, nor in the immediately previous 'new' continents I think. On a hilltop spanning the Dearheart and Easche sims in Geata, the auction purple reveals a Linden Protected area. If Magellan has been there, he's left no signs. Now that the Map highlights the existence of the place for anyone to see, maybe he'll not bother. _____________________

I wonder if some of the time displacement effects we were talking about earlier have been affecting that hilltop? Perhaps the Lindens have detected something up there that hasn't fully materialized in our dimension and they have cordoned off the area. Is the area explorable or has entry to it been disabled? Devil's Tower anyone? |

Dyslexic hedgehog - it's "LL 0891".. i've been trying to figure out if there is any significance to "LL 0891" and found several things.. one of them was an electrical component and seemed interesting, but not so revealing or connected as to warrant an end to my search. i also found an artist, Sebastiano Conca, who was from Gaeta and was born in 1680. there might be a connection here, not sure. but, by far the most promising result was the result that produced this page: http://trigan.com/cgi-bin/triga.pl?x=o;y=ll0891 i find this image from a Trigan comic of particular interest: http://www.lifeinlegacy.com/2004/0103/LawrenceDonComic.jpg it also turns out there is a comic book called "Albion", in which there are characters who had appeared in "The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire". and with that, i'm done searching for now. i may be over-reaching and implying connections where there are none, but still interesting. (the last thing i saw while searching was an image of a tower on a hill.. couldn't find specifics yet and i have to go get ready for work) _____________________

Hmn... it's not a lighthouse: it's a mooring mast for an airship. No idea who the man in black is, but I have to assume he's kinda important. I'm only seeing one person on board, though. None of his crew. I need to keep an eye on dat photostream. Not sure if these are telling us where he's going or where he's been. I suspect the latter. They dun tell us where he is *now* however. Mari I wonder who this is too... http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeskalinden/2436142259/in/set-72157604663110428/ Is Magellan meeting with someone from LIER again? Is this one of his old crew mates? Where is this mooring mast at? Is it in a part of Gaeta we haven't seen yet? Perhaps there is some sort of structure further inland in Gaeta's interior? p.s. If the tags for this Flickr image have any weight, it seems this mooring mast may be located in Bay City! |

If one looks as the visible, yet clearly incomplete satellite images of Bay City on the SL map, an outcropping near the sea in the middle, north could possibly a mooring point. LIER and the conspiracy of silence...
04-28-2008 23:29
Is Magellan meeting with someone from LIER again? I could be wrong, but we never got any further along discovering who or what LIER is, did we? Are they a Linden sanctioned group or do it go beyond They Who Must Be Obeyed? Does anyone have a list of members, known or possible? Maybe we need to look into this from the other end, so to speak... _____________________

From http://secondlife.blogs.com/magellan/2005/02/1028_am.html ... February 10, 2005 10:28 AM I opened the newspaper this morning and saw that I was working again. Jerks. This is why I disconnected the phone. Perimeter motion sensors are picking up activity. Probably the Linden Inhabitable Environment Reconstructionists. Back in the old days Exploring was just a way to get girls, now it is all Rendered Destiny and "More Land, Young Man." What fun is it to find exotic locales just so everyone else can see them? Ah, they made it to the door. So much for the passive defense system. Chin up, might as well give in with dignity. Mood: Annoyed. ![]() Music: Komeda, "Nonsense" So it sounds like an official group, though I don't think it's been made clear what the charter is.. _____________________

So it sounds like an official group, though I don't think it's been made clear what the charter is.. Aside from his blog and the former SL History Wiki, I see no reference to the "Linden Inhabitable Environment Reconstructionists" on the web. Anyone see any inworld references? The beginning of the Magellan Chronicles mentions LIER.. From http://secondlife.blogs.com/magellan/2005/02/1028_am.html ... So it sounds like an official group, though I don't think it's been made clear what the charter is.. I wrote a bit about this here: /327/34/248406/10.html#post1950758 It includes your reference as well as a reference to Magellan's last blog post where he was in some sort of negotiations with LIER. He mentions someone named "Ryan." He could be speaking of Ryan Linden in that post. Sounds like LIER has some sort of control over how new regions get opened up to the public? It's almost like once a new area is scheduled to be gridded, Magellan has a limited amount of time to explore it before LIER starts opening it up to the masses. It doesn't sound like he's too happy about that process. p.s. I think that LIER is a Linden organization that operates under the radar. Part of the reason that one runs into cloaked avatars now and then, especially in the newer regions. There is very little information available on them, it seems. And no mention of them at all on the official SL or Linden Lab web sites. If there is a group established for them inworld it is hidden from the public Search. Does anyone know when the next Linden press conference is? Perhaps this would be a good time to ask some questions about this shadowy group. |
