I don't think i'd want to engange in these nominations with DarkLife because in the case we WOULD get chosen I would have to maintain a seperate version of DarkLife on a 1/4 of a busy SIM that could be laggy

Like the rules say, "Gridwide games are permissible, as long as the game starts and finishes at Arcadia."

some concerns
02-02-2006 03:44
i would also like to chime in on some concerns about the process.
the idea of using "pay to vote" has a massive ability to be "gamed", as mentioned earlier in this thread. sure, it's easy enough to limit the amount a developer can spend on their own game and possibly alts as well, but the whole "friends of" quotient is an extremely valid concern. example: developer A asks SLer B to pay X amount, promising a return of X% of total earnings to SLer B for their "voting L$". a process which could be repeated as many times as the developer would be willing to do. it would only take a couple Lindenaires to ensure the "success" of any particular game. i would hope that no developer would wish to take this path, instead preferring to see how their game truly ranks amongst SLers, but there is always the possiblity that soemone will and that would not only be unfair to other developers, but a dark marring on SL's integrity. - my other concern is with the submission period ending on February 7th. this gives very little time for anyone who would be interested in this to be made aware of this announcement and less time to act upon it. in a related note, is this being announced grid-wide in-world? how many developers/SLers will be made aware of this opportunity solely via the forums? i understand using the forums is the best way to see a concise response, but if this is the only place where an announcement is being made, i fear there will be a backlash of SLers who feel their game(s)/nomination(s)/vote(s) were left out in the cold. - these things being said, i think this is a great idea and look forward to what happens. does the announcement mean that these games will be presented to the RL public at large at either E3, GDC or possibly both? if so, that's absolutely wonderful!! i love how SL is moving forward in so many productive directions. i can remember dreaming of the day when we started scratching these surfaces and i'm ecstatic to see it beginning to happen. (granted, SL will need some serious upgrading in peformance for the public at large to consider it of current value, but this will definitely show off it's intrisic value and offers a very encouraging peek into the future) good luck to everyone involved and may you all receive some well-deserved recognition, to boot. ![]() _____________________

sicbo

I nominate sicbo. It is in the final stages of development. Each player bets on the outcome of the throw of three dice.

in a related note, is this being announced grid-wide in-world? I did not see this forum thread until I read about the announcement in the MOTD so LL has made an effort to get word of this in-world. |

awesome!
02-02-2006 05:58
Ush, thanks for that tidbit of info. i haven't been in-world since early yesterday and not much lately, but you know.. between being addicted to the forums coupled with being a ResMod, i tend to spend a lot of time in here nistead.
![]() anyhoo, that's great news! now if we can just get something to prevent gaming the voting system in place, we'll be much better off. i can't wait to see what gets nominated here and what ends up in the Arcadias. maybe after the nomination process is over, the nominees could end up in a thread where people can come to see suggestions as to some fun things to do in SL, akin to the "7 wonders of SL thread" that has ended up as an informal list of cool places to visit. (i'd like to sticky that one if i can find where it went off to) _____________________

Game Nominations
02-02-2006 02:17
I nominate High Rollers Craps and Numbakulla (sp) the exploration game sim done not long ago. Both the simple High Rollers is fair and fun and the latter is interesting, lovely, and nothing like a great treasure or scavenger hunt to make your day.

I'll use my second nomination to nominate The Collective.
Though I only first heard about it about a minute ago when I read the posts here about it, it just looks cool. Plus I know Grim, and he's a hell of a coder. If he's workin' on it, it's gotta be pretty damned sweet. Or at least will be if not already. *grumbles about the power failure at the colo and wonders how the hell a colo can manage to have a power failure... damned backup generators that aparently don't work... lol* But at least it gives me a chance to catch up on the forums. *lol* _____________________

I nonimate Tech Warfare
02-02-2006 10:05
Tech warfare is a real time strategy game. You create robots that have AI that automatically head to the enemy base in order to destroy it.
There is a coice of 14 different robots. Your strategy relies on choice and placement of game pieces. Teams can be 16 vs 16 players. Eckhart Dillon scripted everything. |

I'm putting my vote down for Tech warfare by Eckhart Dillon. This is an excellent real time strategy game. Like poopoo is saying, it's extremely addictive and fun to play.

Nomination: Tech warfare

I'm nominating Tech warfare by Eckhart. I've not seen much of the other games, but I'm a sucker for a wild RTS game.

I nominate Settlers of Second Life.
02-02-2006 18:03
It's by Sprite Quartermass and Lex Neva. The SL equivalent of Settlers of Catan. Very addictive and very well done.

I got to put my vote in for Tech Warfare by Eckhart Dillon. The game is a real-time, 3D strategy in which you allocate a variety of robots and turrets in defensive/offensive roles to hold your side of the field while taking your opponents'.
Kinda like somebody stuck chess and StarCraft in a room together with some Isaac Hayes, and sweet sweet love ensued. |

Settlers of Second Life!
02-03-2006 00:25
I second the nomination for Settlers of Second Life by Lex Neva and Sprite Quartermass. It's a great strategy game that's got me hooked - you collect resources to build roads/houses/stores and hold events, and there's even a land baron with sinister sound effects!
