You paid for a product and got the product. Now enjoy it. Even if prices were not to drop you would have eventually lost your money in tier payments. Even if your business is covering your tier it is still a loss and not a gain.

I have paid my tier with the money i have made in SL, i have also made a profit, which helps me expand , now what should i do, expand more? (no ways, i cant expand if dont have land and i am not paying a single cent more for land if this is what will happen), so ill just take the profits out the game and limit the product that i provide......

So yes i am actually makin a little profit.... but that profit will now be taken away in the long run due to these wonderful land price hickes...... caused by LL supported by people with a little land and screw the people who have worked their @rse of to get where they are..... Remember , we all start at the same place..... no differance.

I have quite a bit of land and don't care one way or the other if my land becomes more valuable or not because i use my land for entertainment. I was one of the people that did benefit from the firstland program and lower prices. If it weren't for me getting my "little land" I probably would have never taken the plunge into a much higher tier. But land is addictive and I want more. Lots more. :D

omg, this is becoming an english lesson is it not....EVERYONE I CANNOT SPELL AND I TYPE ENOUGH IN MY LIFE TO NOT WANT TO USE FULL WORDS!!!

Forgive me for not being serious about business ......

i mean come on, what has that got to do with the price of chickens? everyone uses these words when typing messages.....SMS, MMS, IM, u(sorry i mean You) name it....

Honestly, as soon as I see "u" or "ur" in a message, I assume it was written by either a 10-year old or a halfwit and move on to to the next post.

If something is worth posting, it's worth posting using proper language, spelling and grammar.

LL intends to bring the price under 10L/sqm, or at least that's what they implied on the official blog. So you can count on it to continue. It is what it is. Good for some, not as good for others.

If they want to bring it down to an average of $10 per m2, they better start dumping a lot more land than they have so far. They need to outpace the barons and the hopped up wanna-be barons who'll lose their shirts.

I say drop another 50 mainland sims at once.

STEW!

Capping land prices won't work.

For the same reason that the value of L$ can't be capped.

If LL changes the SL interface so you can only buy land for a fixed price per square meter.... sellers will simply insist on being paid in other ways for their land.

If LL fixes the L$ rate, people will use IGE, or GOM or whatever other brokerages that buy and sell L$'s.

You act as if this land release is some mystical new policy on LL's part... it is not.

Ever since day one... every day that LL releases, or does not release land... or says they will.. or won't... or remains silent... it all affects land value.

It affects land value if they release land on regular cycles... and unfairly benefits that know about those cycles.

It affects land value if they release the same amount each day, because other factors may increase or decrease demand and people that are paying attention can unfairly benefit from that too.

40 sims added to a grid that has 4000 ? That's a 1% increase.

ONE PERCENT !

You're making a mountain out of a molehill.

If anything.. the factor that is far more likely to be having a downward pressure on land value is the change from L$500 a week to L$300 a week for newer premium members, it takes them longer to save up... so if they're gung-ho on not buying L$, it takes them longer to buy land... which has caused a dip in demand.

To summarize:
  1. Capping land prices won't help you.
  1. Changing land release policies won't help you.
  1. An increase in grid size by 1% ... responsible for a 40% drop in land value is an absurd notion.

If you believe those crummy tv commercials the city of Perfect probably has them, but of course we don't live in Perfect.

ROFL... well, yes, in Perfect, all the corporations have shareholders that don't care about profit and executives that are happy to make just a few dollars more than the rank and file. The oil companies in Perfect would never do something so unfair as to raise gas prices during a time of record profit on people who need to drive to get to work. My health insurer in Perfect would never raise my premium just because expenses have increased and they have to charge me more (unfair!!) to keep their shareholders happy and their CEO in his 20 million-dollar a year lifestyle.

LL say they want to make land more affordble ....ok ... just open 50 sims and sell cheap plots but remove resell option .... simple :)

aGREED.....oops...I had my caps lock on. (though it is appropriate...hehe)

yes, it may be that simple.

Or will THAT backfire. For instance, say the land flippers buy up the plots of land and are now forced to hold onto them for a month or more (while paying tier fees). When it comes time to sell the land, won't they want to jack the sales price up in order to still make a profit? Possibly....but most likeley, it will will run a lot of them out of business because the majority of residents will not pay the extra cost for the land.

And forgive me, but how can you be serious about business when you will not use "your" or "you" as opposed to "ur" and "u"?

I am sorry. It's petty but the irony is simply too great.

I don't quite understand this mentality of land being an investment. Before I would start any investment I would do a lot of research. Doing that research, I would have seen what LL does when they feel that the land prices have gotten too high. Last time the prices where very high, LL flooded the market to reduce the price of land. I would have also seen a direct increase with the price of land when the stopped creating new land. LL has also told us for a while that the island orders would be filled soon, and that they were going to double the amount of land that they were releasing to try and bring down land prices. Those are all big hints that land prices are going to fall.

And as for land being an investment, has anyone been watching the US stock market these last few days? A lot of people lost a lot of money in a very short time. With all investment there is risk. If there was no risk, everyone would be investing and making money. And that just doesn't work.

"The decline in high-end profits, which also excludes the buying and selling of land, came amid a sharp drop in the price of virtual real estate. After two months of steep increases, prices plummeted in late January when Linden Lab abruptly added 40 new sims to the market. Average prices per square meter had risen from L$6.67 in November to L$9.74 in December to L$12.30 in January. "

;) Well said! Amen to that!

Just a tip to those who are tired of people who have nothing productive to say and don't say it well. I find the 'ignore this poster' option under profiles to be very useful in wading through the forums. It's better than being tempted to reply to someone (i.e. the OP on this thread) who just doesn't get what you're trying to say and wants to fight with you about it.

If you read the rest of the responders, you will notice they take the time to use complete words and somehow manage to get their message across. It's not petty!

Also, I'm glad they are releasing land, the price was going crazy and I am now ready to buy.

Is this your response to my post? I can't tell.

That sounds like "A correction" not a "drop". Land prices were inflated because supply fell behind demand and other reasons.

Why did land value drop?

Anger with lack of... and the end of End of first land. Less cheap land for land barons to snap up and resell at more of a profit. Some may have called it quits and are liquidating what they have left... if they depended on gaming the first land system for their supply of land.

Why else? Rumors of an outsourced version of the SL server side... made people wonder why they should pay for land if you can host your own? Big panic regarding the value of buying land from LL for a while over that.

The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. Dropping a land bomb may reverse that for a short period of time.... but ultimately 'fair' 'predictable' 'steady' ... all work towards the rich-getting-richer model.

If you don't buy and sell land ... why do you care? Enjoy the land you have, get your tier's worth of use out of it. When you're done with it, get what you can for it. You never know... if LL decides not to release land for a whiel you may get back several times your original purchase price.

Worry about it later, when/if you're looking to sell.

All I see is a thread with one guy who has 100% disgreement with his thinking doens't matter who is saying it everyone says the same thing Stew, but your not listening

we have people from all "classes and walks of second life" posting about it no matter where they are on this second life food chain and you just dont hear it.

Personally I think you must make money from buying and selling land and got burnt because you didn't read what others were noticing and take what linden labs said seriously this is what I see otherwise I dont understand why your so upset.

Look at the market most people who just want to buy land for keeping tend not to buy when the market is way high unless they have a lot of real world cash the rest wait.

Meanwhile the fact that you say you wnat land prices capped means you dont understand the game at all and if your complaining about your high priced land if the prices are capped you will never make profit ever at least this way as long as your using the land theer is no big deal and when you feel like having a change of scenery watch the market buy accordingly move and sell .

Everyone has said the same thing and for me what i see is a guy who bought land at 16+ cents per meter squared which if you look around at private forums and this one everyone saying was far to high a price and a bad deal and not to buy. I dont htink you listened. Well the prices are going to drop again due to what basically amounts to "the government" which in our case is Linden Labs doing something about it so if we want to get technical about it look to how countries are run look how they try to reduce inflation. Linden labs is reducing inflation its needed so they are doing it and i say good for them. They are mostly hands off but when something goes really wild they do start to manage. AFter all its their game and their livelihood as well and they are doing what needs to be done to keep it as healthy as possible given the tools at hand and the fact its all a virtual world.

I'm a relative newcomer here - just over 30 days. I have been following this thread with a great deal of interest because, well....its interesting. I see two somewhat competing points of view here: (1) People who enjoy speculating in virtual real estate; (2) People who not only don't enjoy this, but feel profitting from this specualtion is, if not morally wrong, then at least tacky. The people in group 1 are either making Ls in this game [I consider this a game] or at least want to. The people in group 2 seem to expect virtual land ownership to be cheaper [if not free] than it is now and also less complicated. Both view points seem valid.

I am in a third group. I have no problem with buying land for Ls. I expect it to be more complicated than..say, buying a dress or a sofa. I bought some land, three lots in what I think is a nice area. I probably paid too much for them, but I am happy with them. It is quiet, no one bugs me, the few neighbors I have met seem pleasant and cooperative, most of the houses are nice. One guy has a bunch of slot maching looking machines all over his land [survey machines?] so I planted trees and will plant more to block my view of them. Someone else subdivided a 512sm parcel into postage stamp sized lots and is putting advertising on them. Irritating? yes, but my view of them is blocked by other features. Here's where I'm coming from. I am enjoying my three little 512sm parcells and my house. I enjoyed furnishing the house and I am going to enjoy landscaping. The expense is worth it to me and I doubt if I will ever make any money on it. This is fine, and therein lies my point. I think the vast majority of people who want land in SL want something nice that they can play with, fix up, change clothes in, invite friends over, and generally use it as alternative to sex clubs, gambling, constant night life and shopping.

I think people, be they big time land barons or just regular folks who sell a quality product at reasonable prices will do well. In the land question, people like me will think of quality land as something that looks pleasant without unsightly signs, clutter or annoying noise. Not everyone will agree with me though. I may even buy a couple of lots and put another house on them and rent them out. Then again, maybe I won't.

The point of all of this is "relax." Enjoy SL for what it is, a fun thing to do. While the philosophical tension between laissez faire [sp?] capitalism run amuck and rampant Socialism on a scale not seen since the fall of the Soviet Union makes for interesting reading, I don't think it is an overwhelming concern for the majority of SL-ers. I have enjoyed reading all of this thread, however, and I appreciate all of your passionate comments. Sarah, I especially have enjoyed yours and thanks to all of you for giving me a little free education.

Dear All that have participated in this thread.

I would like to say that it was never my intention to insult any one of you. If you feel I have then I apologize.

I have come to the conclusion that I may or may not be the only one who feels this way, but everyone has their stand points.

I am here, a SL client and I am voicing my frustration, Everyone here can look at this situation in different light, we all have our own opinion on this topic.

It seems the majority feel this is a positive approach to a problem that has been lingering around for months. Unfortunately this resolution has upset some and has pleased others.
I suppose either way we look at it, obviously it is not for us to decide.

To the people that decided it was necessary to start insulting, I don’t believe that this is a solution, I have a different opinion to you, I have a difference in circumstances to you, it does not mean that I am a half wit. It means that I am a human being expressing my disappointment towards a situation.

I do understand all of your points whether I take them to heart or not is a different story.

Be pleased that there is people who take pride in the land, who take pride in the value of their land, if only you could see my property, my business my land. You will see that I offer a excellent solution, containing ethics and an all round great service.

Thank you for you comments on this threat, and thank you Susanne for a very fair comment at the end.

Well all have a different purpose and we all have our own thoughts and feelings, this is what puts the human into the AV.

Have a wonderful day further,
Best Regards,
Stew
