During the summer of 2004, land prices were sky-high. At the end of the summer, LL flooded the market with new sims. Pirces dropped precipitously overnight. Their reason for doing that way?

"We wanted to break the backs of the land barons" -- Direct quote from a higher-up at LL.

i.e. it was a conscious decision to negatively affect some of their best customers. Those that paid the most tier and made it easy for individual SL users to quickly acquire/get rid of land.

Linden Lab only cares about Linden Lab. If they think flooding the market with land will net them some benefit, you can bet dollars to doughnuts they'll do it.

True That, True That!!!!

It is not the Av's with small amounts of land that are being effected, it is the people who are paying big money for the Tiers......... Its about time that people stand up, cause if this is going to happen, i will pack up and leave.... and u know what, people can say im being to sensitive but like i said, these decisions cannot just continue like this..... Anyone would be upset in this position.... i dont see LL doing anythin about it, i dont see apologies..... and u know what, everyone wants land.....but when u have allot u realise its worth, and when that is taken away even though u paid for it.....u will fight back!

Yet even after that. They still gamble in the land market. Go figure.

Who said anything about a gamble? u suggesting that nobody buys land at all? or if u do, make sure u buy a little?

U know im not buying and selling shares here, i am buying land , running a business on that land and one day when i am done , i would like to sell the land for around the price that i paid for it..... but now it will be worth half the price, why should i continue to expand my business with SL and in SL if this will kind of thing will happen?

LL is supposed to influence land. They are the only ones that can create it. If you bought too high and are now stuck with a bunch of land that you cant sell, woopsie. Should have thought that out better. People are still bidding sims up higher than they really should, so someone somewhere is selling land. Either that or they are hoping they can outbuy the rate that LL can release it and keep prices at where they are now. I'm betting LL wins that one. A couple months of a lot of new sims coming out day after day... Land prices are going to fall. And if LL releases a lot more land and your sim just happens to become worth a fraction of what you paid for it, well, we told ya so.

PS- If you leave because of that, can I have your stuff ? :)

I would like a million dollars to fall into my lap. You don't always get what you want, Stew. And land price volatility is just part of the game. You can't take that out.

Why should they influece the land price? They dont have to over create? What are they tryin to achieve? You right they will win, that just the problem....As i mentioned you cant exactly make a informative decision unless u get the information.....Pointless giving the info when its too late!!! I am NOT buyin and reselling land....i bought land and i dont appreciate that the people that i bought the land from are the same people that are killin its value.....

Right. You want land prices to stay where they are so you don't lose your investment. I'm sure people who bought at 20L/m2 are crying now too. You took the risk, now live with it.

How would you feel about LL influencing land such that prices increased?

if some one bought land for 20L/sm that is bad decision cause the average selling price never reached that high..... whether i made a good or bad investment it does not matter, and really i dont care but you cannot honestly tell me that what the lindens are doing is the right and fair thing....and if you do then thats what you need to tell, you dont need to tell me that i made a bad investment....Tell me why you agree with what the LL are doing? Thats what i need to know.....

We are paying for the product and the support and right now , both sucks.....

I absolutely agree with what they are doing, because I would like to see more landholding people in this game. It benefits LL, it benefits this economy to have more landholding people who are -invested- in this game. But with land at 13, 14, 15, 16 L/m2, it is a little too high for many people. It is a barrier to investment, and probably the primary barrier. I am all for removing the barrier to investment in the game.

So what u are saying is u would like to see more people invest? The people owning land at the moment, are they not paying for that land? Also, Remember paying for tier is not bringing money into SL it is puttin money into LL pockets , selling land at 16L/sm is bringing money into SL, and as i said before, how did the prices get that high? Because people were buying it......

YES I want to see more people invest. More people investing means that they are buying more things in this game. They buy for their houses. They buy for themselves. They make businesses. They buy stuff they don't make. Other people buy what they make. That is good for the economy. Prices got that high because there wasn't enough land to begin with. People wanted land and still want land at affordable prices. And as for it lining LL's pockets... you know I don't mind! If it will enable them hire someone else who is competent, the by all means, LL, take the gd money and give us good service!

Your view is short sighted and completely self interested.

They already did. If I want more islands I gotta pay another $400 and another $100 a month. And no, we didnt like it, but mmmm they make em, and noone else does. So, we pay it or we shut up about it.

I just shut up about it and quit buying them.

land prices will fall to what they used to be that is the plan so that its affordable since the game is hinged on people going premium to have a "second life" unlike some of the land barons /brokers etc who came on the scene in november the ideas of "haves " and have nots as its been put is not with regard to land if it was then the game would be a bust.

People are supposed to be able to by enough land to make a little house on at a price that they dont have to sell their eye teeth for. Many may argue that this is not what is wanted. I am still pretty positive that the land prices will again go below 10 cents per square meter now that i have discovered pretty private islands i'm not one to build on the mainland any longer once upon a time island living was a bit more expensive then mainland living its reversed now and it should not be hehe.

paying 4 or 5k for a 512 lot is not to cheap nor is it that high its almost attainable for an investment or rather outlay of cash that would be equal some entertainment. Those who want to do business and have large chunks of land can pay for it either on the mainland or the islands. The point being even at a low price for resell if you are busy bidding accordingly on the auctions you should not be making aweful returns this idea that the only way to make a good return is to buy high and sell high make no sense

I know I know yo udont believe it but the fact of the matter is that the prices need to come down for those holding premium accounts its what they have premium accounst for. People attempting to pump the price up for no reason just to make like 300000000% profit going to hurt themselves in the long run. Although I have not seen many buy a sim at low prices and then go charge like 16 cents per sq meter. There was no panic the last time stuff just got out of hand. Now Linden labs usualy does what they say they are going to do even if its not immediate. The bottom linei s if they say they are going to work the bring the cost of land down to what is should be (yes i said that ..) they will and they will continue to dump sims until the price falls there. Also hopefully those who have been waiting to buy mainland sims at a reasonable price (entire sims) instead of an island will soon be able to do so. A lot of people have been waiting for reasonable prices for a long time now its time they got them and I think they will.

If your buying high now DONT its a mistake stop turn back..

And then what did they do? Changed the auctions so only land barons could buy directly from LL.

Oh boo hoo poor land barons can't sell over priced land for like a day. Yeah I don't feel sorry for you at all. The only thing you guys have ever done is to trick people into buying land at inflated prices in order to line your pocketbook.

The prices of land have been absurd and the ones loosing out are those who can't afford their own sim or noobs who really don't know any better.

Then again the last time I bought land it was at L$4/m2. Since then I have refused to give any land baron L$1.

well their not killing the value of their own product they are ensuring it endures because their product depends on people keeping and holding premium accounts and buying land. People have gone free and in some cases quit due to the inability to get land at a decent price 100 bucks for a thimble full of land is not good. I dont think you understand but the more people stay and play the game and buy products and make products and "live a second life" the more linden labs benefits. Crippling prices do not help anyone regardless of what you think they cause damage and lots of it.

Also its not a full market they have to manipulate it a bit or it will go haywire and so they are doing it the fact of the matter is whether you like it or not land prices are way to high (ere were) they are still high but not as bad i'm sorry but your wrong..

Wow, Ricky and Schwanson posting in the forums! Repent! The end is near!!

I will second what Ricky said. LL has always disliked the mainland land baron. They love the island owners, but not the mainlanders. LL has also stated that their "ideal" situation is where sims are always available for $1000. I don't know if that has changed, but when full sims first went to auction, this was stated. Once land returns to the ideal of LL, whatever that may be, they will try and keep prices at this mark. They did it with the Lindex and I guess land is their next target.

How can they go for that when that is the minimum starting bid price and they then give all of SL 48 hours to bid it up?

I do see the selling final auction sale prices trending lower, but so far brokers are just taking more profit and not passing the savings on to you, the plot buyer.

From: LL Announcement

You may ask what, without First Land, is the value of a Premium account? Well consider that the L$1200 stipend per month (around USD$4.50) plus 512m free tier per month (around USD$5.00) means that the monthly premium account essentially pays for itself. We are actively looking for additional ways to increase premium value, and we would love to hear any ideas the community has on this.

You keep referring to land barons, what about the people who simply own the land..... We paid the price, now we are paying the price again because you dont want to pay the price and bottom line , TRUST ME if you wanted the land bad enough you would darn well pay for it, This is what they call life, premium account pays for themselfs.... they want more people to own land because of the idea the "the more land you own, the cheaper it becomes" (like buyin bulk) as far as tier is concerned, This idea loses LL more money than if more people owned 1024, because thats where people start paying LL..... oh shame people dont want to pay for their land....cry to LL and they will hand it to you in a silver platter? oh wait but ur tier increase so its ok for the lindens to make lots of of money....and all the poor buggers out there that do own land, they just have to accept that because the bulk are wining and now we will to hand u our WELL paid for land , for the price of just next to nothing......

They are killing the price of their product.......Forget about the land barons, thats out if this disucssion........We are talkin about people who have paid for their land in a decent manner, now ur complaining and we lose out.....This is not RL stuff, this is NOT the way it works................... BOTTOM LINE. U would hate if u are in the the reverse role(my role, of owning land) .....but i am still in ur Role, and i still pay the price!!!!

The land wants to increase....why do u think it keeps going up, it will increase....eventually the profit margins will be less and it will balance out, im convinced of it.....But if LL keeps doing what they are doing, they are thinking about the people who are not paying yet and are not thinking of the people who are actually paying...........wait until ur paying!!!
